Reflection
At the beginning of my master’s program at Full Sail University if you had told me that I would be as in love with the program and the school as I am I may have called you a liar. So many things have made me fall in love more and more with the school as I continue to be a part of it. I am currently in my 5thmonth and am a part of a class entitled Research and Investigation Skills Development. This has opened my eyes to what goes on during the process of investigating a story in journalism. I knew coming in that this was a necessary part of my career and something that would make or break me as a journalist, but I never took into consideration what went into it.
Upon starting the class I had three goals. One learn the proper ways to investigate a story. This was something I had no idea what to do and I have since learned how to go about it. Two: Gain more information about conducting interviews. Talking to people is something I find myself struggling with. I didn’t know where to look or didn’t know how to even approach individuals. Since the start of the Class, I have found myself growing with being more open to asking the questions that some may not feel they want to ask. I have found myself becoming more confident in approaching and asking for help from those around me to gain the answers I was looking for. And Three: I honestly just hoped to grow in my knowledge of Journalism and what goes into the day-to-day knowledge growth. I found myself wanting to know more and wanting to learn more about what goes into it.
So much information was gained during the course that it’s hard to choose three pieces that stood out to me the most. One thing that I feel stood out the most was staying on top of the information being gained to make sure that you are providing the most up-to-date information. Another is that deadlines in the journalism industry are not just meant for the journalist that is okay to give your interviewee a deadline as well. And three you are in control of the interviews. Not allowing the interviewee to take over is a key way to gain the information that you need appropriately.
I look forward to continuing through the remainder of my degree and can’t wait to see where it takes me and how I continue to grow as a person.
