At the Christmas Bazar in Budapest, there were many different stands where artisans offered carvings of many kinds: bone, horn, stone. However, this man’s beautiful wooden carvings and stylish look surpassed all the rest that day.

Wilson’s Ballroom Guide and Call Book, written by George Wilson, is a guide not only to the physical act of dancing the proper steps, but also to the etiquette of how to behave oneself during a dance or ball. It is directed towards young men and instructs on when to approach a lady, how to ask for a dance, and most importantly of all, never to forget a dancing engagement! The end of the first chapter titled “Ballroom Etiquette” states:

Etiquette requires study and memory. Its rules are often despotic or arbitrary, but if strictly followed the right action will be performed under any circumstance that may present itself, and the actions of each individual mingling in society should be such as to secure the approval, respect, and good wishes of all with whom you may come in contact.

This book, published in 1884, is part of our Picchi Etiquette Collection.

I love the sharpness of the drops in foreground and the two human silhouettes. Are they look at each other? At least that’s what I see, for me this photo has a melancholic atmosphere and somehow it feels like a farewell.

The American Oystercatcher is one of my favorite birds to photograph. This was taken while lying in the wet sand, as the Oystercatcher moved progressively closer (until my lens couldn’t focus anymore).
