Thank you @xandwhy for the kind tag :-) here are some of my all time favourite songs:
1️⃣ Tunnel Of Love by Dire Straits: while I do not feel particularly attached to the lyrics, this song has a gigantic effect on me whenever I listen to it. It’s one of those songs I remember so clearly from my childhood and it reminds me of many happy memories of that time with my family or other people who were in my life back then. The last minute of the song with that beautiful and heartbreaking guitar solo is probably my favourite single minute in the whole history of music.
2️⃣ Cannock Chase by Labi Siffre: now that’s a song with lyrics I feel connected to. I relate a lot to what the protagonist of this song seems to be living, and in particular I love the sentiment of “whether I reach that goal or not, whether I achieve what I want or not I have lived and the trip is worth it regardless”. While not discarding failure and saying that all dreams must come true it still keeps a hopeful and light tone towards life and the future, which is something I really need. Generally speaking, finding joy in life just because we exist is a topic that means very dearly to me.
3️⃣ This Must Be The Place by Talking Heads: often described as the “autistic anthem of love”. Nevertheless, I relate to it in quite a different way. I came back to this song different times in my life when I felt out of place and far from home. More than an anthem to love, it is to me an anthem to homesickness and not belonging. And yes, maybe love, but it’s more love towards my dearest ones who in those occasions were often far away, leaving this hole in my heart where I felt disconnected from everything and mostly everyone.
4️⃣ Radio Ga Ga by Queen: definitely one of the band’s biggest hits and generally speaking one of the most famous hits of all time. Yet it’s always been my favourite Queen song since I was a little kid, and I wish I could explain why. There’s something in the ethereal, almost immaterial instrumental of this song that has always kept me hypnotised, as if I was hearing something that was born among the clouds and was made of light and air. I don’t know. I get that it’s a radio vs video song, something about the new era that music was living at the start of the 80s, but in my inner child’s mind it will always be this sort of spiritual and angelic song fabricated in the sky.
5️⃣ Souk Eye by Gorillaz: definitely among the songs that I struggle listening to the most. A song about love, probably a love that was there and is now unconditional, probably unrequited, but nevertheless a persistent, burning feeling that we seem to struggle to get rid of. And it is, of course. another brutal relatable topic for me. When I listen to it I feel all the pain, all the burning of caring deeply about someone and not receiving that same type of devotion back. And the fact that it also sounds like and feels like a goodbye makes it all harder to digest. You’re leaving this person, maybe for a while, maybe forever, but they’re never, ever leaving you.
Well, enough with this sentimental talk. Tagging:
