Dog Days are Gone || Lucissa & Brax
This was horrible. She felt horrible. And hungry, and sick, and weak. And she hadnât take any potions to calm her nerves before comong here. Or at all in the past few weeks. Sheâd been trying very hard not to take anything in an attempt to make things up to Severus and to hide the fact that she had been coping very poorly on her own from Lucius. Perhaps she should have done. Because standing on her father-in-laws doorstep was honestly making her more anxious than anything else had recently. And all they needed to do was go in and pick up their dog.
In all honestly Narcissa wasnât sure what she hoped for. Yes, they had tried for so long to have a child. Years. But for the past few months, it had been the furthest thing from her mind. First she loathed him, then they disliked each other, then they had finally made up with drunken, foolish sex. Of course it would be their luck for drunken, foolish sex to get the into this mess when they couldnât possibly raise a child now. Right now.
âI canât help it,â Narcissa huffed and glanced across at him. She still felt awful, and she was no longer sure if it was the nerves or whateve illness was ailing her. She probably wasnât pregnant. It seemed so unlikely. But she was so anxious on what ifs. Like she always was. She reached down for Luciusâs free hand, and laser her fingers through his. âWe have to⌠if weâd cancelled he would have asked whatâs wrong and we donât know whatâs wrong⌠I could just- I might just be ill, darling.â
Abraxas could here the muffled sound of voice as he grew closer to the front door. The knock had reverberated through the house, filling in the silence with a resounding echo, a product of the cane, no doubt. At least Lucius was using it, the stubborn fool.Â
He supposed he knew today would come, his son and daughter-in-law coming to pick up the dog they had left with him during their bout of anger and frustration. It was good, splendid even, that they had repaired what they could, enough to allow his son to pick up the dog whose name had once sent him into a fit of sobs.Â
Abraxas had not seen his son react in such a way since his mother. He had not expected it, nor had he truly known how to react to it. Taking in the dog was all he could do. And, if he were to admit it so some small part of himself, he would miss the bugger.Â
The older Malfoy wrenched open the door and studied the couple on his doorstep. Narcissa looked pale, tired, Lucius even more so. His son fidgeted, fingers an anxious staccato on the head of his cane. He arched a brow, a clear question stamped across the lines of his face, the hardness in his eyes thawing for just a moment as he nodded at the young woman.Â
âCome in, both of you. Your beast can come soon enough. As for the moment, I suggest you sit, Narcissa.â It was not an order, not truly, but the context was there, plain enough.Â
@lusciousviper  @cissaâmalfoy
The affect of Narcissaâs touch was almost immediate on Lucius, the young man straightening and holding his head up a little higher than before. An action as simple as brushing her fingers across his would leave him feeling more at ease, a welcomed break from whatever anxieties were eating away at him. She had seemed off since the start of the week and couldnât quite seem to tell him what could have caused the sudden shift in her health, thus causing Lucius to spent more time worrying about her than himself.
âYou arenât allowed to be ill,â Lucius shuddered at the word. Years of health problems of his own and having lost his mother to dragon pox left him despising any sort of reference to being sick. They hadnât gone through two months of being at each otherâs throats just to have it end with her falling ill. âI refuse to let you be â Thatâs my job.â
Lucius tensed once the door opened, his grip around Narcissaâs hand tightening once his father appeared. He tried to stand straighter just to end up fidgeting when he caught his fatherâs gaze. Lying and acting as though everything was fine was fairly easy â At least until his father was involved.
âThank you, father,â He breathed out once Abraxas finished talking. His voice was a lot quieter than he expected. âI can get a chair for her once we are in.â Lucius stepped to the side once he finished speaking to allow Narcissa to enter first. He gave her hand a reluctant squeeze before letting go of it.
@cissaâmalfoy
Narcissa was certain he sometimes worried more about her own wellbeing than she did. Even though it should proably be the other way round; he was the Death Eater with a myriad of health problems, after all. âWell I am ill, Lucius! And I know why youâre worried but I promise you it wonât be anything serious.â Her expression softened a little after she snapped at him, it wasnât his job to keep her from being ill, but it made her smile that he thought it was. She mean over to kiss him on the cheek, lips only just brushing his skin before the door opened, making her pull away quickly.
The sudden movement was, as it turned out, a poor choice for the young woman and made her more light headed. Abraxasâs request was met with pursed lips. âReally, youâre both being ridiculous, Iâm perfectly capable of standing,â she muttered with a roll of her eyes.
She missed Luciusâs hand almost immediately after he let go. Even after all heâd done to them, he was still her safe harbour. It was easier to remain calm and brave with his fingers wrapped around hers. Going into Abraxasâs house still felt somewhat daunting, especially when she knew that he looked at least a little disappointed in the both of them.
Before going too far into the house, Narcissa waited for her husband and father-in-law. Waiting for the latter to come guide her to whichever parlour or sitting room they would be in today. Her waiting had another reason though, as she stumbled slightly, sticking her hand to the wall to steady herself and not even finding the effort to cover it with her usual grace. She just met her husbands eyes in a sheepish silent request for aid.
A Bit of a Posture // Severus & Narcissa
Severus had expected Narcissa to be weak.  He had expected her to be depressed, devastated even.  Her mood had been dower and quiet every time he had seen her up to now.  When she came by his shop he had to crane over to hear her, barely catching her words.  But now⌠now there was a fire behind her eyes, and Severus didnât like being the target of it.  He glanced down at the rose in her hand and visualized his own neck in her involuntary grip, a shudder passed down his spine. Â
With all of the icy coolness of the best pureblood matriarch, Narcissa greeted Severus. Â He stood straight, a forced attempt at falling into the pleasantries that Abraxas seemed intent on shoving down his throat. Â For once he was glad he knew the proper way to behave in a social situation. Â He supposed that might be the only way he would get out of this conversation unscathed. Â
âI didnât quite realize we were on such proper terms, Mrs. Malfoy.â Â Severus let Narcissaâs last name hang in the air for a moment. Â It was a risky move, knowing her current attitude, but Severus had come to the manor to prove a point. Â As insufferable as Lucius was and as needy as Narcissa was, the two of them needed each other. Â They made each other better, and Severus was determined to remind the two of them of it. Â
âMy apologies for not warning you of my arrival. Â I stopped by rather impulsively, my presence obviously needed.â Â Their conversation felt forced, uncomfortable. Â Narcissa still stood, partially shrowded by the shadows in the hallway. Â Severus understood Narcissaâs frustration, but he had his own annoyances with the witch. Â Lately, the only time she had deigned to see him was when she needed a potion from him. Â He had become her dealer, no longer a friend or companion. Â These pretenses only highlighted the stilted manner in which their relationship now existed. Â
âOf course, Mrs. Malfoy. Â I would love nothing less than to spend the afternoon touring your gardens,â Â Severus responded, offering his arm to the witch. Â His retort was laced with the same daring undertone, his actions over exaggerated in a challenge. Â Two could play this game, and Severus had just as much a right to anger and annoyance as she. Â âLead the way, madam.â Â The evening was a ticking time bomb, and one of them would fall victim to the otherâs explosive emotion. Â Severus was determined to make sure that she lost her composure before he lost his. Â
Cissa was done sulking. She refused to hide herself like she had been the one to do anything wrong. Her only blame was the stupid fight, and they had fights all the time. She did not force her husband to drink himself into a stupor and bed another woman. So she held her head high as she eyed Severus coldly. A large part of her wanted to make him regret coming here to aid her husband. Another part of her wondering whether he would have inquired after her wellbeing at all had she not come in when she did.
Watching, she bit back what would be a cruel chuckle as she watched him try to imitate the pleasantries and posture of a pureblood gentleman. She'd never looked down on Severus for his lack of good breeding. All the Malfoy's liked him well enough to overlook it. But watching him now, in anger, try to put on this facade in an attempt to placate her - she almost wanted to mock him for it. "I fear that given what I suspect is the reason for your visit, I would prefer an attempt at propriety... that is if you can manage it. I know it's rather difficult to get correct when learned so late in life." She could not resist just one jibe when he said her last name like that. It was as though he was trying to anger her with it.
âNeeded?â She raised an eyebrow. âForgive me, I wasnât aware that we required your assistance, Snape. We certainly didnât ask for it, Iâm not sure I can agree that we need it.â If Lucius wanted to wallow in self-pity and neglect his duties that was surely his own business. She did not see why he required Severusâs help when the man had not come and given it to her. When it was her who had been wronged. Her who had been heart broken. Everyone saw her as delicate, fragile, and yet when she actually got hurt it felt as though everyone other than Sera was rushing to her husbandâs side. It hurt especially coming from Severus.
It was the way he kept saying her last name. As if dragging it out and reminding her she was a Malfoy. He neednât have bothered. She was already all to aware of it. So she laced her arm through his with a cold sneer on her face. Perfect nails resting on the sleeve of his coat, like talons ready to dig in and skewer her prey at any moment. With her other hand she twirled the overly fragile rose between her fingers as she led him to the gardens.
âYou know, Severus, Iâve been through rather a lot these past months,â she said calmly, and from her tone, one could think she was commenting on the warm - if a little overcast - weather. Glancing across at him as gravel crunched beneath her feet, she pursed her lips. âBut what has been the most⌠troubling to me, is when people I thought I could consider friends deign to throw me over, as it were, in favor of my dear husband. Itâs especially troubling when those friends are of a lower status than myself, reliant on the Malfoy name, in a way, as I am the only younger Malfoy willing to face society at present, and I know I could sway my Father-in-lawâs support away from those who have wronged me. But you of course already know that my husband is hiding his face in shame, because it was him you came to see, was it not?â
narcissa malfoy ( nee black ) and lucius malfoy, the royalty of the wizarding world. you would have gone to hell for him i know oh but darling - he would have stayed to burn with you.Â
Dog Days are Gone || Lucissa & Brax
Luciusâ fingers tapped against the top of his cane while he stood outside his fatherâs house. He and Narcissa had set a date to retrieve their dog and the plans had almost been set on hold. His wife was ill, showing symptoms of morning sickness, and Lucius was trying his best not to freak out about it. The timing was awful and he was seriously hoping it was just a cold or something, but a week had passed and Narcissa hadnât kept her breakfast down from that morning.
The two stood outside of his fatherâs house, Lucius unable to bring himself to grabbing the knocker and announcing their arrival. The anxious feelings that stuck around for most of his and Narcissaâs fight still hadnât fully disappeared. Everything seemed worse now that he and Cissa were aware of the fact that she could be pregnant. He took a breath and went to raise the hand that wasnât toying with his cane, choosing to glance down at Narcissa before he followed through with the action.
âYour fidgeting is only going to make him assume something is wrong,â Lucius muttered. âAre you certain today is a good day to get the dog back?â

A Bit of a Posture // Severus & Narcissa
Mafloy Manor
Immediately after meeting with Lucius
@cissaâmalfoy
Severus nudged aside a spare fragment of wood with his foot. Â He had mostly reassembled the door after blasting it apart from itâs hinges, but he purposefully left a bit of debris and dents in the wood of the door. Â He wanted Lucius to look at that damn thing every morning when he woke up and realize he was being a complete idiot about everything.
It didnât make sense to Severus what the two of them were doing, bickering without actually talking to each other. Â Anyone could see the two of them were miserable, but they were too stubborn to realize they werenât good without each other. Â Lucius assumed Narcissa needed space to work through her issues, so he had locked himself in his study. Â All of his distance and secrecy only emphasized Narcissaâs loneliness and feelings of betrayal. Â
And as much as he liked his mate, Severus could see Lucius had made a horrible, terrible mistake.  He had been careless, thoughtless, and stupid.  To go after some trash when he had his treasure at home⌠Severus would never understand how someone with excess in all areas of life could still be in want of more. Â
Their conversation did little to put Severus at ease. Â Lucius seemed content to wallow in his own guilt, doing little to actually correct the situation. Â It was exhausting, talking with Lucius sometimes. Â He was so driven by his momentary emotions that Sev could do little to make Lucius see past the fog of shame that seemed to color his general demeanor. Â
One of the house elves approached, and Sev attempted to make himself as authoritative as possible. Â âMake sure that you feed him three times a day. Â Donât argue with me, elf. Â Force feed him if you have to.â Â The elf nodded hurriedly and bowed in acknowledgement. Â âAnd please, if you have to knock him out and drag him to the bathroom, make sure he bathes.â Â The elf nodded once more and scurried off into the shadows of the house. Â Severus sighed, turning to leave himself when movement in the shadow of the hallway caught his eye.
Severus suppressed a small gasp, the air seeming to catch in his throat. Â He tried to mask it with a cough rather unsuccessfully. Â The figure moved forward and Severus fidgeted awkwardly with the cuffs of his sleeves. Â Narcissa stood, clearly upset and looking rather imposing. Â For perhaps the first time, Severus began to see the family resemblance she held to her older sister.Â
âAh, erm, Narcissa.  I was just⌠leaving.â  He didnât want to ignore her, but he had barely managed to stomach a rather useless conversation with Lucius.  Severus wasnât sure he could handle the tears from Mrs. Malfoy today as well.  âThat is, unless, you needed my assistance for something before I go?â  Â
She hadnât started the day feeling terrible. The bed was still too big, and the room too lonely. But she didnât feel entirely awful about it. It was a rare moment of missing him but not hating his very guts for ruining their marriage with a bit of drunken fun. So, Narcissa Malfoy didnât feel awful when she left her room that morning. She didnât feel like people were gossiping about her when she walked through Diagon with her head high. She didnât feel terrible until she got home.
Not immediately of course. There was still time to enjoy the sunny gardens before facing another betrayal which she had simply not expected. Sat amongst her ever growing Rose Garden. Conveniently placed very far away from the anniversary Aviary sheâd had built for Lucius. Sheâd not been in their since she came home. It wasnt like sheâd ever liked the peacocks anyway.
So, after this relatively pleasant beginning to the day Narcissa managed to make her way back into the house, twiddling a rose from the garden between her fingers. Pressing curiously at the thorns which were certainly hard enough to prick the skin id you pressed hard enough. The blonde was so absentmindedly distracted by her rose that she didnât even notice the lack of elf coming to greet her at the back door. Asking to take her hat, or if she wanted the rose in a vase. She didnât notice any of this till she heard his voice.
It was obviously not a difficult voice to recognise. She saw Snape so often. Sheâd seen him more before her marital troubles began. But she still saw him plenty. Seeking his aid with certain things. Still considering him a friend. It was very unexpected then, to hear him giving orders to her house elf. To see him outside her husbandâs study. To realise that he had spoken to him. To think that he had perhaps finally chosen a side, and that it wasnât hers.
All of this was indeed sticking enough that Narcissaâs trip tightened unexpectedly around the stem of her rose. The thorns sticking her hand and causing her to wince, but not release it. Gritting her teeth, she managed to pull together a smile.
âMr Snape,â Narcissa greeted with a cool sneer. Eyeing the door behind him where she knew her husband was holed up. Avoiding her and her anger and mood swings. âA pleasure to receive you. I do wish you had sent word though.â
It was of course possible that he had sent word of his visit. Just that it had gone to her husband instead of her. It just hurt Narcissa rather deeply to think that Severus, who she had always thought neutral in this. And rational of thought. Would side with her husband. Her cheating disgrace of a husband. She bit her lip as she fought not to snap at him on feeling that. She needed him after all. He was an excellent source of potions and the like.
âI didnât require it⌠but if you would take a stroll with me I would be very grateful.â The words sounded inviting, but really they had a hard edge that left little room for questioning. Narcissa was a lady and socially his superior, so if he really wanted to be a part of their society, Snape couldnât refuse. Not to mention Narcissa had mastered the art of making requests in such a way that people knew refusing her wasnât really an option. âThe gardens really are lovely.â She waved back to the direction sheâd come from with her now damaged Rose.
Donât wanna feel Blue anymore// Lucissa, 21st October 1978
âThatâs a start,â Lucius sighed. He hated himself for having hurt her, knowing it could take years for them to get back to the point of fully trusting each other. âIâm not being dramatic,â He rolled his eyes. âYou snogged my fucking cousin. If it was a friend or an acquaintance I could justify wanting to hex them. But no, you had to kiss the one person who I canât touch. Vin and my father would have killed me before I got the chance to point my wand at her.â He clenched his jaw after that and shook his head. âSheâs not coming here. Iâll let my father know weâre doing dinner at his house this year. I donât want her anywhere near me or you.â âAt least you would have had kids,â Lucius gave a bitter chuckle. âThey only know because you told Sera âBecause you kissed her. You were the one who thought it was appropriate to get even on a day where most of the pure blood families were at our home. She probably told everyone anyway, and I didnât deserve being humiliated in front of everyone because you were too inebriated to care.â He paused for a moment, needing a deep breath. âItâs funny, Iâm supposed to forgive you and her because you were drunk â to act like it never happened. But you didnât accept that excuse from me when I first apologized. At least I had enough common sense to go after someone we arenât related to.â His words were far harsher than they meant them to come out, but the explosion of words from his wife were the cause of it. âI shouldnât have ââ He shook his head. âJust ignore that last part?â
âI love you too,â Lucius bit down on his lip, trying to keep from crying. It was ridiculous â Angry words one moment, wanting to break down and sob the next. He hadnât wanted her to cry, so he reached forward, gingerly wiping the year away from her cheek. Lucius chewed on his lip, willing himself not to cry as well. He reached forward to pull his wife toward him, pressing a kiss to her forehead before he answered her. âCan we make the elves do it? I donât want to get up yet.â
"Yes, I snogged your cousin! But you- you would have done more than just hex someone! Anyone else! you- you started a fistfight with Vin. If I'd been missing anyone but Sera, we both know you would have done something worth regretting!" He was possessive of her. He liked to act like he wasn't, and it made him a hypocrite now. But he was. As she knew she could be of him. But she hadn't gone after the bitch who'd slept with her husband, demonstrating that she at least had some restraint. Lucius had not exhibited any... apart from not actually hexing Sera. "Lucius, I'm not going to kiss her again. She's your family... You know your father won't let you avoid her forever." Narcissa sincerely hoped that Sera wouldn't goad Lucius about the kiss at Christmas, but that may very well be a fool's hope.Â
"Oh please," Narcissa scoffed, "as if you wouldn't have taken a lover too." He'd started all this after all. If their marriage was truly that damaged why wouldn't he have taken a mistress to have children with. And he still had the power to walk away from her with very little of the blame And marry again much more easily than she would. "Everyone knew anyway! I know you told people what you did, and gossip spreads! And you want to talk about being humiliated, all of our friends saw my husband punch me in the face!" She huffed, plucking at the bedsheet to distract herself from this entire thing. His words cut deep, because there was no sense to the whole thing. Common or otherwise. When she spoke again, her time was calmer though. "I- I don't expect forgiveness because I was drunk... and it took me a while but I- I am forgiving you, Lucius. Even if you- you had the 'sense' to sleep with a barmaid I don't know... though I'm sure she's known to a great many of your work and drinking friends."Â
Narcissa sighed, leaning into him when he pulled her close. Closing her eyes, relaxing into his embrace. She was still holding onto her anger. And she was sure they weren't quite done fighting about this yet. But she wanted to be. So much of her wanted to go back to before he'd been unfaithful. Before her heart for broken. Before she'd kissed his cousin. They couldn't go back, of course. The only way past this was forward. So she sniffled, shaking her head. "We could, but you promised me breakfast, husband." Pulling back, she offered him a watery smile. "Are you really going to disappoint me?"
Donât wanna feel Blue anymore// Lucissa, 21st October 1978
âI was ââ Lucius stopped without finishing the sentence. Saying he was drunk had gotten old and he wasnât wanting an argument to start from it so he took a deep breath. âCissa what is it going to take to prove that I donât have an interest in anyone else? I â I would be willing to make an unbreakable vow that it wonât happen again.â He released a shaky breath after that and looked away from her. âYou had to pick the one other blood relative that I have,â He mumbled. âI donât want her in this house anymore. I canât stop questioning what would have happened if I hadnâtâŚâ Lucius paused to shake his head. âWeâre supposed to have her over for the holidays Narcissa. I canât fucking look at her.â
He bit into his lip when she started, body tensing at her tone. He should have just kept his mouth shut and allowed her to do the talking. âYou could have kept to the not sleeping in the same room and taken someone more worthy in in secret â Keeping the facade that everything was fine when we were in public. Continued with the way we were on my birthday. All the snapping and barely looking at me.â He got quiet for a moment, his shoulders shaking while he forced himself to take a few steadying breaths. âI sound ridiculous but I â I honestly wouldnât have been surprised if you had decided to never talk to me again. Your words just⌠They stick around in my head and I canât stop worrying about them. Empty threats or not, you canât - You need to watch what you say.â
Lucius took several more breaths after that, unable to shake off the uneasy feeling that had spread. Her touch brought his eyes to hers, his jaw hanging open until she spoke. Three words registered out of everything she said and caused Luciusâ breath to catch at the back of his throat. His eyes widened a little and he tried to keep his emotions back, his face scrunching up from the failed attempt. âI-I,â He stammered and looked away from her. âI didnât think Iâd ever hear you say that again.â He had missed her too, but he was certain his actions had made that clear. âThatâs a relief,â Lucius sighed. âI donât think I can put up with fighting any longer.â
âItâs- You need to accept that I may never be convinced. Not entirely. But I believe that you wonât hurt me again.â That was what she had to believe. It was her only option, because otherwise they were going to tear each other apart. She didnât need an unbreakable vow⌠she just needed to have a little faith. âFor Merlinâs sake, Lucius! Stop being so dramatic. Would you care this much if it had been any of our other friends? Rab, or- or Severus?â Her nose crinkled at the thought of kissing severus. The very thought to bizarre for any time of day, let alone this early in the morning. âYou shall simply have to bear looking at her, darling. Sheâs coming.â
âWhat kind of life would that have been for any of us? If I had picked a better- if i had picked another man. Had children with him⌠they would have had your name. Because otherwise what kind of future would wait for them?â Narcissa sighed, dragging a hand through her hair. Meeting his gaze, she but her lip. Hesitating before the next words came out. "I- looking at you made me angry, so I snapped. A lot. And my words hurt but your- your actions hurt, Lucius! They hurt both of us. Everyone knows what you did, and they blame me! Everyone blames me for your straying and I- that made me last out more, so yes, I'm sorry but you- you deserved it!" She let out a breath, not having really meant to say any of that. It all came out in a rush like flood gates she couldn't stop.
It was important that he knew she still loved him. Even after all he'd done. After all both of them had done. She held her gaze steady and bit her lip. âWell I do. I love you. So please forgive me, because I canât bear this.â So much for holding it together. A tear slipped down her cheek against her will and she turned her face away at last. Burying it in her hands. "Do you- do you think we could- could get that breakfast now?" She sniffled.

Donât wanna feel Blue anymore// Lucissa, 21st October 1978
âThatâs a lie,â The words came out in a whisper. âI â I grovelled.â He sounded disgusted in admitting such a thing. âAnd you know I wouldnât have said anything if I didnât meanâŚâ He didnât do apologies and had defended himself enough to be tired of doing so. Lucius merely shook his head. âToo far.â He repeated. âA bit of fun would have been someone outside of the family, not in our house and not on my birthday.â She could be vicious when she got mad, and Lucius dared not bring that up. They werenât supposed to be arguing anyway. âThatâs not getting even âThatâs just cruel.â
Lucius closed his eyes when she spoke, biting down on his lower lip to keep quiet until she got her thought out. âOf course I do,â He sighed, his hand stilling when she shook her head. âI ruined us, ruined everything.â He chanced a glance at her and swallowed back the uneasy feeling that was rising in his stomach. âYou will always be enough for me.â He sighed and brushed his lips against her forehead. âThatâs a promise.â
Her next set of words brought the uneasy feeling right back, Lucius hesitating before he managed to say anything. âYou put me through hell, Narcissa. Why should I easily accept your apology when you spent weeks making sure I knew just how terrible I was?â He had hated himself since the moment he realized what he had done, her words and actions only added to it. âThe two weeks of not talking were enough for me to realize just how big of a mistake I made. Everything after that had me ââ His voice cracked and he took a few shaky breaths before he spoke again. âI spent the last month terrified you were going to end things. Terrified to open my mouth because you always found a reason to start yelling at me.â He paused to shake his head, unable to keep his voice from shaking. âYou say you wouldnât have left me now, but there was a moment where you thought it was an option and I â I donât know what I would have done if you had.â He couldnât bring himself to saying anything else about it so he moved to sit up. âWill eggs work for breakfast? I donât want to talk about this anymore and I believe Iâve lost my appetite.â
"Fine, alright. You apologised. But you apologised for cheating on me! Forgive me for believing that you had lost interest because clearly that wasn't what I was supposed to understand from your interest in bar maids." Her time was sarcastic and biting. Like it had been throughout all their fights. She was so tired of it now. Shaking her head, Narcissa apologised again. "I'm sorry," she murmured, closing her eyes. "I'm sorry I kissed her, I'm sorry I keep snapping but it's- I spend so much time trying to be this perect wife, this model of someone of our status and you- you still made me feel like it wasn't enough so for a minute, I stopped trying. I got back at you. But I never meant to be cruel. It was just a kiss."
Yeah, she thought grimly. Heâd promised that before. But she didât voice it for the first time in a while. Instead she nodded and let the momebt pass. Worked on believing that he really did think she was enough. That he'd alwayd thought that, even when he'd strayed and flirted elsewhere.Â
âOh, because what you did to me was a walk in the par-â she started to snap, but managed to stop herself. The idea was that she was snapping at him less. âI couldnât end things, Lucius. Thatâs not who we are. Everyone would have said it was my fault, it was never a real option, I would have never be accepted in society again.â So he was wrong. It had never really been an option. And she loved him. Sheâd said a lot in anger but it was mostly empty words. He brought up breakfast and she let out a tearful laugh. Half exasparated and half amused when she next spoke. "Eggs? For fucks sake, Lucius! This is the most civil conversation we've had in nearly two months, I'm not giving up to have breakfast. I'll fix our marriage if it kills me!" She rested her hand on his cheek. Holding his gaze firmly. "You've been my husband for four years. You know I don't mean half the things I say when I'm angry. I- I love you and Merlin knows we both made mistakes, but I slept with you last night because I wanted to. Because I miss you. Because I want you back and I don't want to keep fighting and being angry."

âAnd you didnât think kissing her would cause me to feel the same way?â Luciusâ eyebrows furrowed together when he spoke. He couldnât look at her while talking about it so he took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose with his free hand. âI had already called it a mistake and said it wasnât going to happen ever again. You kissed her anyway and I â I felt bad enough about my actions with you refusing to talk to me and having left. You took it too far by doing that.â He hadnât meant for everything to slip out, but he couldnât bring himself to saying it after the party had ended. He bottled it up and it remained at the back of his mind until he was certain he could speak without getting fully upset with her. âSuppose I had decided to kiss Eleanor or Evan because of what you did, Cissa. How would you have felt then?â
He released a shaky breath and bit his lower lip. Getting his thoughts out in full was always a challenge, Lucius left fearing she would hate him after the way their past conversations ended. He never really learned the best way to channel his feelings so letting everything out at once wasnât uncommon for him. âI hate what I did to you,â He sighed after a prolonged silence, the void filled by his taking a few shallow breaths and bringing a hand back to playing with her hair. âAnd I should have said something sooner but I â I couldnât.â
Lucius clenched his jaw at her touch. He knew she wouldnât forgive him easily, yet she was able to brush her own actions off as though they were nothing. âThere was a moment where you didnât love me enough as well, you know?â Several of them if he was being honest with himself, but he wasnât looking to bring up everything. âThe kiss, threatening to divorce me, all the yelling ââ He took a deep breath, not wanting to make things worse than he already had. "I love you Cissa, but your words were just as damaging as my actions were.â
âNo! I didnât-- I didnât even know if you cared about me like that anymore!â It was a weak excuuse. Sheâd known how much he hated his own actions. What had happened to their marriage. But Cissa had made it worse. She knew that. âToo far?!â she scoffed. âIt was- It was one kiss, it was a bit of fun.â Narcissa pulled a face at the idea of him kissing her cousins. âThat- I made us even, Lucius. I sacrificed my moral high ground and got even but thatâs all it was!â
âDo you even know what you did to me?â She murmured softly, eyebrows knitting together. It was easier to relax when he played with his hair. But for a moment it wasnât and she shook her head. âDo you know how much itâs still eating me inside to know my husband - however occasionally - prefers other women?âÂ
She grimaced when his jaw clenched. Knowing it was her touch that caused that, âThatâs not--â Not fair? Not True? She couldnât really think of a good argument that didnât sound like she was being petty. So instead she sighed and dropped her hand from his face. âIâm sorry, then. For hurting you... but itâs not the same, Lucius.â Crossing her arms, she ended up digging the fingernails of one hand into her arm. Shaking her head, she breathed out heavily, The sigh audible in the quiet room. âI donât agree. I could never have left you. I was all talk. But you- you did something real, Lucius. To me...â Narcissa eventually remembered that she wasnât supposed to be arguing with him. âBut I am sorry.â

âOf course,â Lucius didnât need to think about what the answer was. It would be nice to go with her, and he had a feeling her presence would be useful in getting his father to give up the âgoddamned horseâ without trying to talk him out of taking it back. âDid I ever mention that my father has been calling the dog a horse? It tried eating his owl before I left the manor the last time I was over.â
The patterns he was creating on her back came to a stop when Narcissa next spoke, Lucius blinking a few times when she said she accepted his apology. âOh, thank Merlin,â He could have cried. He pressed his teeth into his lip to keep it from quivering, having spent more time crying the past couple of weeks than he liked to admit. âSheâs my cousin and it was my birthday,â Lucius couldnât bring his voice above a whisper. âI didnât expect you to get me anything and I wouldnât have been surprised if you felt the need to get even, but you â You had to kiss someone Iâm related to.â He bit down on his lip, needing a moment before he could say anything else. âYou werenât even home for twenty four hours and trying to approach you in the time leading up to that ended with you storming off or yelling at me⌠or both.â He took a deep breath after that, not wanting to give away just how much catching her and Sera had hurt. The thought of the two being left alone together still made him uneasy. It didnât matter how many times Narcissa swore nothing would come out of it. âYou donât plan on doing it again, right?â
He hated hearing her sniffle, knowing he was the cause of it. The idea of forgetting the charm would have terrified him since he and Narcissa had agreed it wasnât the time for bringing a kid into the world, but he couldnât help but think it would give them an excuse to fully work things out. Lucius shook the thought aside, then pressed a kiss to Narcissaâs temple. âYou could have talked to me â Without finding an excuse to berate me every time you tried.â Narcissa did yell a lot and Lucius had pointed that out by yelling at her and threatening to leave the last time she took things a bit too far. He could have said he was at fault as well, but the idea of doing so was lost at her question. âI ââ Lucius hesitated, lifting his hand so he could grasp her chin, getting her to look at him. âWhy would I say that if I never stopped loving you?â
âYou neglected to mention.â Cissa chuckled. Wondering if Narcissus was indeed but enough to be called a horse. She would put her money on it being Malfoy dramatics. They were, both such dramatic men, it had to be said.
âI know sheâs your cousin,â Narcissa said back, still in a hushed tone. âBut sheâs my best friend. And she was- she didnât blame me for what youâd done. She knew how I felt.â She wasnât trying to justify it. No more than Lucius had tried to justify his actions. She was just reasoning them out to him. Perhaos in the hope of lessening his disdain fkr her and her choices. Sera was still her best friend, afterall. It would be nice to still spend time with her. âNo, Salazar, no Lucius. It didnât- I was just- would you do it again?â
She closed her eyes for a moment when he kissed her temple. âI wanted to,â she mumbled, looking down. âI- I tried, but every time I looked at you, I saw you with- with her, and that mark on your neck. Her mark. And I couldnâtâ,â she cut off. There was no point thinking on that now, because she had got herself to look at him. To remember that he was hers, and one night, one mark, wouldnât ever change that. He caught her chin and she had to blink watery eyes so he couldnât see how upset she still was by the whole thing. âI-â she stammered, âJust tell me you love me then. Because for a moment, you didnât. For a moment you chose her over me and I donât care if you were drunk, because there was still a moment in your life when you didnât love me enough.â She moved her hand to run her thumb across his cheek.Â

âWe do,â He murmured. âMaybe Iâll visit this weekend to get him.â Lucius missed the dog, but keeping him out of the house had been the best idea he could come up with at the time. He had done enough beating himself up over it without the dog there as a reminder. âThatâs assuming you want the dog back that soon?â He kept to trailing his fingers along her back, welcoming it as a distraction from getting lost in thought.
âNot even marrying you,â Lucius let out a soft chuckle. It felt awkward leaving his lips, but he tried not to show it. âI did.â He had hurt her with one poor decision and was certain he had done more damage than she lead on. âI shouldnât have and I regret having done so. Please accept that much as an apology.â He was back to feeling uncertain, unable to properly voice his thoughts. âI deserved the yelling,â He sighed, knowing she couldnât help it most days. âBut I wasnât the one to make you kiss my cousin.â
He bit at his lip when she spoke, hoping that would keep him from saying something sarcastic. âThen letâs hope one of us remembered to use the charm,â He muttered and shook his head. âIÂ messed up. You just made it worse.â He didnât blame her for what happened, merely regretting that things got as bad as they had. Lucius moved to kiss her back, slipping his other arm around her. âShe meant nothing, and she is nothing,â Lucius murmured against her lips, moving to press another kiss to hers. âYou are all I could ever want and all I could ever need.â
âCan we go together?â she asked quietly. Partly because she wasnât sure she wanted to let him go any point soon. Sheâd rather spend the next few days mending things, and an outing to pick up their dog seemed like a brilliant idea.Â
He chuckled and that made her smile though the expression did not quite reach her eyes. Not like when sheâd been laughing before. Before he suggested talking about what had passed like it was a good idea. âI know you regret it- And I- I accept your apology.â Finally. It had taken her long enough. Originally sheâd wanted nothing to do with his apologies. She swallowed thickly when he brought up the kiss with Sera. âI never meant to kiss her, you know? Itâs just- we were just- I wanted to feel wanted.â She breathed out tearfully, raising a hand to her eye because she absolutely refused to cry on him. âYou were- you were avoiding me and she wasnât. Sheâs my best friend, and she wanted me, and I was drunk and Iâm- Iâm so sorry, Lucius.â
She gave another week sniffle. One of them better had have used the charm. She was in no position to raise a child with him right now. They were only just recently comfortable in each othersâ company. âIâm sorry. I didnât want to make it worse. I just didnât know how to make it better.â It was a weak excuse. And if she wouldnât excuse his cheating, why should he excuse when he found her kissing someone else? But that really had meant nothing, could never mean anything. She was never sure of the same with his affair. His arm went around her with the kiss and she moved the hand holding the sheets up around her, winding it into his hair. âTell me you still love me?â she breathed out softly, between his kisses.

Donât wanna feel Blue anymore// Lucissa, 21st October 1978
âIt was back when he was asking about the lack of a grandchild,â Lucius muttered, shaking his head a few times before he glanced down at his wife. The conversation had been short since he wasnât comfortable with saying much about what he and Narcissa got up to. âI would like to think he was joking about it."Â He bit into his lip when Narcissa glanced away from him, fearing he had said the wrong thing. Lucius took a deep breath before moving to sit up, pulling her close to his chest before he bothered with answering to her.
"I donât. I would never regret anything with you,â He murmured and wrapped his arms around her. The fact that she had to ask made his chest hurt. âAnd I never meant to ââ He paused to take a deep breath, tracing circles along her back. âNever meant to ruin what we had.â The disagreements were all his fault and he wouldnât be able to erase whatever doubts she had in her mind anytime soon. That was the biggest thing he regretted, but he dared not say it. âI missed you too much to regret last night Cissa,â He sighed. âYou had me thinking I was going to lose you forever.â
Lucius took a deep breath at his wifeâs words, chewing at his lower lip. âIt would,â He glanced down at her. âBut I â I wouldnât be upset if we were toâŚâ It wasnât the right time to be talking about any of it, so Lucius breathed out another sigh and pressed a few kisses along her cheek, pausing when he reached the corner of her lips. âIâm sorry I messed everything up.â
Groaning, Narcissa wanted to bury her head in her hands. Back when he was quizzing about the lack of grandchild. A question which would surely linger over them even longer now that their society and friends knew at the very least some gossip about her husbandâs indiscretion. âI cringe to think of that conversation,â she muttered. âBut we- thatâs besides the point, we need our dog back, Echo misses him.â The other puppy was pining - and rather large now which made her attention seeking all the more problematic. Perhaps they would be better with just one.
âNot even marrying me?â she joked half-heartedly, giving a little bit of a sniffle as she leant back into his touch. The trail of his fingers along her bare back soothing her nerves. âYou didnât- Not- You shouldnât have slept with her, but that-- I--â she hesitated to say she overreacted. Because she still believed that she hadnât overreacted to that. But the shouting at him at every turn. The kissing his cousin. That had been a touch too far. âYouâll never lose me. I would never- I wonât really leave but I- I-â she kept stammering. She didnât know why. Words just werenât coming easily to her this morning. âIâm sorry about all the shouting.â
Wouldnât be upset? Narcissa had to contain a bitter laugh at that. âLucius, donât,â she said warningly. They couldnât possibly have a child right now. They had a marriage to fix first. And theyâd been married to long to have a child that was an âaccident.â She smiled as he pressed kisses to her cheek, turning her face to meet them as he reached the corner of her mouth. âYou didnât-- We both messed up.â Some of us more than others. Narcissa didnât voice that thought. Just caught his lips in a long kiss. When she pulled back she kept her eyes closed, forehead against his. âPromise me she meant nothing?â
Donât wanna feel Blue anymore// Lucissa, 21st October 1978
He just wanted to hold her and forget about everything that happened. Putting it behind them would be a great start, but they needed to talk and figure out where they were. She had gone as far as threatening to leave him at one point. That had disgusted him enough to not be able to eat for a few days. He couldnât even look at himself in the mirror. Having her back in his arms and not seeming pissed off at him was a blessing in itself.
Her laughter brought a smile his lips, a few chuckles escaping from him before he spoke. âMaybe Iâll make it so I have less to do, then,â He sighed. It wasnât as though he needed to work anyway, but that was besides the point. Lucius believed himself to be exceptionally smarter than his coworkers and the higher ups in the Ministry. Talking with them always left him questioning why he was wasting his time there.
The sudden stop of Narcissaâs fingers brought a sharp intake of breath, Lucius stilling beneath his wife. The apology was ready on his tongue, his mouth open until he was certain she wasnât mad at him for suggesting they talk. âIt probably is, but I refuse to talk to him about that. Last time he â He suggested I was having performance issues.â A slight frown etched across Luciusâ lips when she moved. He wasnât ready to get up and didnât want to leave the bed. His eyebrows furrowed together and Lucius shook his head. âI barely remember getting you in here, Cissa,â He mumbled. âSo I-Iâm sorry if IâŚâ
If only the moment could have lingered longer. The two of them laughing, and smiling and wrapped around each other in bed. Joking about his work. Like they used to do. It hadnât been that long ago, but things had been so different recently that it felt like an age ago. Threats of leaving each other, constant fights and shouting, all of it that theyâd never had in four years of marriage. Then two months of hell. No wonder sheâd been pestering Snape for calming potions to deal with it all. No wonder sheâd visited Bella for her advice on how to cope, how to not feel any of the hurt that came with entering her own home. No wonder.
âWhat?â Narcissa said, looking back at him in surprise. Heâd never mentioned that to her before. She wasnât actually sure how she felt about the fact that Lucius had previously discussed their bedroom life with his father. Her heart sunk when he said he didnât remember getting her in the bedroom, and she looked away again, letting out a small breath of air. âO-oh.â Admittedly, sheâd been very drunk as well, but she knew what sheâd done. She remembered suggesting they move things back to their bedroom. To find out he didnât even remember that... âDo you-- do you regret last night, then?â
For the first time in months, she wanted him to console her. To wrap his arms around her and tell her that, of course not. But she didnât know if he would anymore. Heâd chosen someone else, after all. Now she doubted if he wanted her the way he used to, because heâd been to drunk to remember getting her to their bedroom, and heâd been drunk enough to claim not remembering sleeping with the barmaid. So perhaps he just viewed her the same as that now. Perhaps he didnât really want her anymore after all. âIt would be just our luck, wouldnât it?â she sniffed slightly, âIf this was the time we...â
