This is an excerpt from an unfinished fic I did back in November. Please be kind with the errors that may or may not be in this. take this as a burner post until i work on something else.
(sorry that this starts abruptly. as i said this is an excerpt..a long one.)
“Mmmph.” A mumble escaped from him. “Mmmmmmmmmph?!!”
Whatever words he wanted to say were being mumbled against the pressure of his sewn lips. His tone sounded rather desperate though.
“What is wrong with you?” I responded in confusion, my tone a little rude. It wasn’t on purpose but I was tired and my brain was trying to process this weirdo at my door. After a few beats of silence I realize it was a dumb decision to try and get him to talk, considering his situation. Maybe I expected him to gesture something? Maybe even mumble something close to coherent words?
He continued staring daggers through the peephole, unintentionally staring into my soul.
“Uhm…Did someone sew..your mouth shut?” I ask, wanting to get at least some kind of context for this man.
Unfortunately my answer didn’t receive a real answer, but the man did respond this time. He starts waving his arms around, while mumbling something.
I had many questions, who sewed his mouth? Why does he look so clueless after I try to talk? I would expect someone to at least shake or nod their head, make some kind of expression other than fear and confusion. This…wirefaced guy was a weird one. He was off but not TOO off, and for some reason the wires that restricted his lips and speech weren't too unnerving, especially not when the world is ending. Everyone had bigger problems I suppose.
My hand gripped the doorknob and slowly turned it. Opening the door in front of him. I moved to the side and ushered him in. He stood there for a moment, seeming surprised by my decision—his arched brows heightened and his eyes sparkled just a little bit.. with a twinge of …..hope? A feeling I haven’t seen, or felt in anyone at all lately, Maybe determination, but the hope that maybe some salvation was at play was foreign to passersby. Not like you can blame them.
The wireface nodded and walked inside. I closed the door quickly when he fully came inside to prevent any unwanted guests. I leaned against the door. Waiting to see which room he’d choose to stay in. Each step he took was cautious, slow, as he basically inspected my home like I owed him money. He searched. He opened a few doors, the living room, the bathroom, until he found my closet, He slipped inside and shut the door behind him. For someone in such a position, he was quite picky with where he went.

The following morning, I groaned softly. I was awoken by my body feeling damp. I had been sweating bullets in my sleep this whole time. It was disgusting to say the least, every crevice of my body was greased with sweat, I smelled, rather questionable too. Maybe a nice cold shower was in order, but first I had a job to do. An annoying one but necessary. I sat up and grabbed my shotgun just in case one of the tests I was about to perform put a bad taste in my mouth.
Exiting my room I ventured to my kitchen. I doubted very heavily that the bearded huntsman was a visitor, and just pulling out my shotgun didn't seem right. So I refrained from testing him immediately and decided to spark some conversation.
When the huntsman first came he told me a story, how he was ambushed out of his own home by that creepy, tall pale man who’s been very irritating recently. which was why he was now residing at mine. I empathized with him.
Sitting down at the table across from him, he carefully held one of my cups filled with beer that I gave him two nights ago. He's really savouring the drink. After taking one of his countless baby sips he placed it down and looked up at me. Nodding a little greeting.
“I heard that door open last night. Stay sharp kid.” He warned. He always told me to ‘stay sharp’. I wasn’t sure how ‘sharp’ he wanted me to get before I’m nothing but a point.
“Yeah, I am.” Leaning against the back of the chair, I crossed my arms and relaxed a bit. “So…how’s it going so far?”
“Well. Considerin’ everythin’, I’m just peachy. Just hope you weren’t being too reckless with that door.”
Biting back an exasperated sigh, I nodded in understanding. I knew this was coming, considering when the man is a self proclaimed ‘visitor hunter’, but even then the nagging can get irritated, Especially when you just wake up, you're sweaty, and you have tests to do to make sure you can wake up the next morning, it can get tiring.
“Look I’m trying the best I can, I’m actually going to test him after you two, he seemed…off.”
“Off? What’tcha mean–off?”
“Like–he’s unresponsive! I asked multiple questions last night and he just mumbled and waved, hardly even that much. Although…He did have his mouth sewn shut. Poor guy.” I traced my finger against the hard surface of my wooden table, before looking up at the huntsman who hasn’t said anything in a few seconds. I found him giving me a look, it screamed disappointment and sarcasm. I rolled my eyes.
“I can’t judge him yet! He probably has something going on, which is why his mouth is sewn shut.”
“Or, someone with the right mind sewn it shut so he can’t eat’cha in your sleep.” He didn’t even bother looking at me when he said it, his eyes fixated on his beer. I obviously had my doubts but my survival instincts weren't like one of a doorknob.
It was more of a very sympathetic puppy.
“This conversation is over.” I scoffed, got up and walked around the table to the huntsman.
“Let me just test you so...you know..”
“Whaddya wanna check?”
I thought about it for a moment. Maybe his eyes, his teeth wouldn’t be white if he just had beers on beers, wait or was that when you smoked? I wasn’t too big on either. I only started taking both when this cataclysm shit came up. I point to his eyes. He nods compliantly.
“You know kid, these eyes used to be sharp as a pin once—”
He opens his right eye wide, gently pulling on his bottom eyelid so I could get a better look. The corners were red. On TV they said that it was a sign of being a visitor… but I didn’t feel like he was. Humans can have one suspicious trait, right? Maybe this stuff is getting to my head. So I’ll hear him out.
“---but after that last run-in, they ain’t nothing but red. I was talking down some varmint and he threw DIRT.. or shit.. Or somethin’ into my eyes. They hurt all the damn time now.” He explained. I tilted my head. I didn’t want to doubt him because he was cool, he told me a story–well more like a warning, he had the right motivations and he kept the neighbor’s daughter company, which is something she really needed but probably didn’t want. Now I'm looking at her. I changed my mind on checking her. If she was a visitor they must be a master at guilt tripping me. It felt wrong to bombard a scared little girl who had just lost her family with tests that might make HER think she’s among the ones she’s scared of. I’ll check her eventually, but not when she’s currently sobbing, i’m not good with kids anyway.
As for the huntsman, I'll…do my research later.
“I’m going now.” I announced, the huntsman picked up his cup again and nodded slowly, giving me a grunt of acknowledgement. I walk out and shut the kitchen door.
The bright ass sun still peeked through my blinds, I had more than enough sunlight to spare. I made my way to my closest, skipping the whole knocking process. I opened it and saw him. The wirefaced man. Now that it was daytime I was able to see him way better than the night I first encountered him.
He leaned against the clothes rack, gripping his oral region with his right hand. He looked more distressed than when I first saw him.
An orange sweater lazily drafted over his shoulders, tied in an effortless knot in front of his chest. He didn’t seem to notice me. I lightly coughed. The wireface immediately turned his head to me in a quick, sharp motion. Guess I scared him.
Directing his bugged out eyes to me, hand still over his mouth. I couldn’t help but gasp lightly at his sudden reaction. I suppose he saw my surprised reaction and relaxed a bit, but only a bit. He allowed his hand to release his mouth, revealing that he had somehow taken the wires off. . I was sure there weren't any scissors around so just HOW he did it was a mystery, but I digress.
He stood there holding on to his neck. Looking at me expectantly. I took one step into the room.
“...” It was just silent between us.
“So..you uh..took the stitches off your mouth?” I tried to sound a little optimistic about his accomplishment, I couldn't bother giving him a smile but I hoped my tone was more than enough. “Gsrh rh z mrtsgnziv! Gsvb HVDVW NB NLFGS HSFG! Qfhg yvxzfhv gsvb wlmg fmwvihgzmw nv.”
What. The. Actual fuck?? What did he just say?
“Hey slow down! What?” I tried to be reasonable, maybe he rushed his words and I didn’t catch it? “R wl mlg fmwvihgzmw blf. Dszg xzm dv wl?” Nevermind. I just can’t understand him at all. He starts looking more stressed. Judging by his tone he asked me something, but what did he ask?
I put my finger up to tell him to wait a moment, I leaned over and poked my head out the closet and looked out into my hallway, It started looking more dim. Shit.. the sun was going down
“Goddamnit.” I mumbled under my breath, I was running out of time, and honestly energy. I looked back at the man who seemed like he was losing it, he looked at me like I was a ghost and was murmuring something.
“I don’t have time to play telephone, listen, let me test you and…we’ll figure something out in the morning.” I say, He arched a brow, feigning confusion.
“Nzpv fk hlnv prmw lu xlnnlm ozmtfztv?” He blinked at me as if waiting for a reaction. I just nodded slowly.
“Sure man, uhm–Test! Test!” Emphasizing my words, I point to my face and put a thumbs up. “R wlmg fmwvihgzmw. Dszg wl blf dzmg uiln nv?” This was basically useless. I took his hand in mine, he jolted at the sudden touching and just looked at me like i’m insane, which I don’t blame him for it though, But he was just pissing me off at this point and I need as much energy as I can keep for when the tall pale man shows his face outside, eventually. I used the hand I held and brought it to his mouth. He winced lowly, I had forgotten he had raw, and tender wounds on his lips from ripping off the wires, but despite the obvious pain he was in, he still complied. I then faked a smile, pointing at my teeth. Indicating I wanted to check his teeth.
“Dszg? Nb MOUF? Bvzs, rg dzh hvdm hsfg. Hl dszg mld? Wi R mvvw gl SMYAL?” I nodded and showed my teeth one more time. He sighed and opened his mouth, bearing his teeth for inspection. I looked at his mouth and his yellowish teeth were stained with crimson red. It was most definitely his blood from ripping out those stitches. I nodded, he passed for now.
“Dszg mld?” he asked. I still didn’t understand and put a thumbs up. It was nearing nighttime now. I should sleep, and so should he, He looked like he hasn’t slept in days.
I turned and headed to the door before I felt something get yanked and a little grunt from the man. I turned to see him looking rather unamused. I tilted my head, “What’s your problem?” He then pointed downwards, I followed where he pointed and realized I was still holding his hand. I cursed quietly and pulled away.
“Oh! S-sorry. Uh..night.” That was more than awkward. More like humiliating. I walked out the closet and shut the door behind me with my foot, there was only but a bit of sunlight left. I should sleep before people come knocking at my door. Again.
