Church Hunters

⬥ The late 19th century. With the rapid scientific progress dubbed the "Era of the Great Breakthrough," calamity also came to the world—monsters and the undead. Humanity began to defend itself and, thanks to science, managed to withstand the creatures emerging from the otherworld. The struggle brought not only losses but also new discoveries: Vital Energy, or "Aether," capable of opposing the unholy, which also spurred advancements in technology, alchemy, and science as a whole. Ordinary citizens merely recall how, ten years ago, they managed to survive the "Aetheric Advent," its nightmare now left in the past. However, secret organizations continue the fight against the scourge to this day.

⬥ One such organization is the "Sacred Magisterium of Occult Containment" (SMOC). Disguised as a network of Catholic charitable foundations and archives across the continent of Wallencourt, it was founded during the "Great Breakthrough" era to combat monsters. Agents working for SMOC are called Church Hunters. ⬥ Primary Objective: Maintaining the "Veil." Society must not know that the unholy still infiltrates the world of the living, contrary to the official declaration of victory over them. Any breach is punished with immediate elimination. ⬥ Funding: High-priority. Comes from royal families, aristocrats (who sometimes become victims or patrons of monsters themselves), and, of course, the Church itself. This allows for providing equipment, safehouses, and high fees to Hunters. Secret Technology: SMOC is an advanced research structure. It combines ancient alchemy and religious rituals with scientific achievements. The Magisterium's specialists create unique weapons, compounds, artifacts, and equipment for the Hunters.

The SMOC structure is divided into two main wings: the Wing of Doctrine (Clerks) and the Wing of Action (Hunters).

⬥ Wing of Doctrine: - Cardinal Archivists: The highest leadership, who never leave their offices. They manage finances, policy, and determine which threats are priority. - Quartermasters and Alchemists: Technical personnel responsible for supply, equipment development, and evidence analysis (analogous to a "Laboratory"). Quartermasters provide hunters with ammunition and special vaccines. - Observers: A network of spies embedded in the police, courts, and aristocratic families. They provide information on strange disappearances. - Cleaners: Agents who eliminate any evidence and traces of the unholy after a hunt, and collect samples of creatures for laboratory study.
