Quote with explanation (#8)
āWords were different when they lived inside of you.ā -page 31,Ā āAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universeā
Ariās words, in his head, speak of teen angst and the inability to reach out to others. When he tries to put his words into words, and his thoughts into conversation, they just donāt present themselves right.
Words were different when they lived inside of you, and have been eating away at you, like in Ariās case. Their definitions arenāt the ones you read in a dictionary, and their meaning is different when spoken. Ariās words never come across properly-until the end of the book.
Opinion and interpretation (#4)
The romance between Ari and Dante at the end of the book came late, in my opinion. I simply donāt fully understand how Ariās love for Dante was hidden away, like treasure in a box: how could Ari never have wanted to show it? Obviously, comments here and there from Ari showed that he had an amount of affection for Dante. Though if he had love for him since the beginning, why did it only truly mainfest itself near the end of the novel?
Quote with explanation (#7)
āScars. A sign that you had been hurt. A sign that you had healed.
Had I been hurt?
Had I been healed?ā -page 335,Ā āAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universeā
The scars from Ari and Danteās accident remain on Ariās legs and remind him of what he had to go through. But here, in this passage, Ari wonders if he had actually been hurt after all; was psychological pain worse than physical pain? Would he ever heal from the post-accident events, like Dante being hurt and Ari beating up Julian Enriquez?

Opinion and interpretation (#3)
After finishingĀ āAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universeā and reading about the author, Benjamin Alire Saenz, Iāve discovered that there is an author surrogate in the book.
On the novelās book jacket, it is written thatĀ āSaenz is a professor in the creative writing department at University of Texas, El Pasoā. An English professor, which Danteās father was in the book. I believe and interpret this to be an author surrogate, which is when there is a fictional character based on the author.
Even though this was a subtle surprise, I liked how Saenz put himself in the book as a character that is loved and has an all around great personality. It added to the book, even after I was done reading it!
Question (#8)
How could Aristotle Mendoza have ever been ashamed of loving Dante Quintana?
Quote with explanation (#6)
āI loved her for her silence.
Or maybe I just understood it.ā -page 324,Ā āAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universeā
After finding out about his brother Bernardo and his emprisonment, Ari feels just a little bit free-er. He analyzes and understands his parents unlike before, especially his mother, who he is describing in this quote.
Ari loves his mother for many reasons, but her silence when it comes to sad subjects powers his love for her. Both he and his mother feel as if silence is helpful and is a space which one isnāt necessitated to fill. Ari comprehends why his mom is silent on the topic of Bernardo, and relates because he is a loner-type/quiet kid himself. Maybe he also inherited this trait from his mother, and not only from his father (whom the reader knows is hushed after the Vietnam War). Ari and his mother are much alike in this aspect.
Ari & Dante

Question (#7) and answer (#4)
What is Ariās biggest secret of the universe?
Ariās biggest secret of the universe that he discovered with Dante, at the end of the book, is to let yourselfĀ āknowā how you feel, āthinkā how you feel, and āfeelā how you feel. Ari finally realized what he had been feeling for Dante was love-and not a simple friendship love...
Quote with explanation (#5)
āThe summer sun was not meant for boys like me. Boys like me belonged to the rain.ā -page 294,Ā āAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universeā
Ariās perspective in this quote is really eye-opening, in my opinion! In this passage, he feels like summers are all about the rain, not the sun and heat parts. Storms came and went, and these were what Ari felt attached to during summertime.
In this quote, Ari expresses how regular things (like summer sun and heat) are not what he relates himself to; rather, he relates to irregular things (like summer rain and storms). Ari is irregular, with his life experiences and all, and this quote describes that.
Connection (#2)
I can connectĀ āAri and Danteā to J.R.R Tolkienās bookĀ āThe Hobbitā. In an odd way, the two books are similar.
InĀ āThe Hobbitā, Bilbo Baggins is suddenly taken away on a journey in Middle Earth by the wizard Gandalf. Without any warning, he is the only hobbit chosen to raid the dragon Smaugās treasure with a group of dwarves.
InĀ āAri and Danteā, Ari randomly meets Dante one day at his public pool and is set on a long tour of life/love. Dante teaches him how to express freely and be outgoing.
The idea of one person sweeping another character away, into a new world, is present in both of these books.
Rain in the El Paso desert (view from Ariās truck).
Opinion and interpretation (#2)
The situation inĀ āAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universeā, including Aunt Ophelia and Ariās family, is an interesting one. Ariās Aunt Ophelia suffers a stroke and isnāt going to make it: the trip Ari and his parents take to Tucson reveals many things hidden from him, things like the lesbian relationship Ophelia shared and his motherās troubles with coping with Bernardoās (Ariās brother) emprisonment.
Ariās parents are the only ones in his family who accepted Opheliaās relation. When they tell Ari and ask him if that bothers him, he simply says ānoā-the same way his parents felt. My opinion on this is that it is a sad situation, that most of a family wouldnāt show up to their relativeās funeral because of their sexual orientation. Our culture should be more aware and accepting of couples that arenāt simply man-woman.
I also interpret this situation in a way that most readers of this book should have: that Ariās parents are amazing, accepting parents who live and think in modern times. I appreciate this portion of the book for this reason.

Quote with explanation (#4)
āShe reached over and wiped my tears. I couldnāt speak.
āWe donāt always make the right decisions, Ari. We do the best we can.āā -page 286,Ā āAristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universeā
This extract from our novel truly proved how much of a great character Ariās mother is. A schoolteacher, her wisdom always helps Ari when his thoughts are muddy. Here, she says that making wrong decisions is right, and we learn from them as we do with any other decision. We all try to take the right path, though sometimes donāt end up going where we want to; Ariās mom proves to the reader that this is fine.
Question (#6)
