It was Friday night and Donahueâs was packed. At the back of the bar, Michael Jackson blasted from the jukebox, telling everyone to beat it. Over by the pool tables, there were simultaneous loud cracks as balls split apart before rolling across the green surface.
The darts competition between surgical and medical residents was heating up, but Reggie the bartender wasnât concerned. Heâd seen a version of this rivalry play out over the years. It usually ended with the losing side buying the other a round of beer.
He wiped the inside of a glass, keeping one eye on the empty barstool reserved for one of his regulars. A threatening glare was enough to disabuse anyone who was even thinking of taking that seat.
Most nights, Ethan Ramsey could be found there, silently nursing a single Scotch and reflecting on whatever a physician of his renown reflected on. Although, ever since the man had gotten married this summer (something that still surprised Reggie), his visits had become less frequent.
But Reggie spied Ethanâs better half on the other side with her friends and knew he wouldnât be far behind. Where Cassie Valentine was, Ethan was sure to follow.
And he was right. Ethan walked in ten minutes later, glanced briefly in his wifeâs directionâa soft smile hovering on his lipsâand then parked himself at the bar.
âDidnât think you were coming tonight,â Reggie remarked, reaching under the bar for the top-shelf Scotch he kept for Ethan.
âLost track of time,â Ethan said, rolling his shoulders and running one hand through his hair before sighing loudly. âItâs been a tedious day.â
Reggie made it a double and left him to his thoughts. Before he turned to his other customers, he caught Cassieâs eye and angled his head, nodding toward Ethan.
Her brows furrowed in confusion at first, and then she glanced at Ethan, saw his slumped shoulders, and nodded in acknowledgment.
A few minutes later, Cassie propped one elbow on the bar and leaned close.
âI have to say, you look really hot.â
âNo, you donât actually have to say that,â Ethan muttered, rolling his eyes as he sipped his whisky.
He could practically see her mentally reassess as he ignored the obvious pick-up line. Really, the woman had better ones in her repertoire. He should know, as heâd been on the receiving end of plenty.
She tried again.
âI heard that you can determine how well you fit together with another person by kissing them. Want to skip the small talk and see if weâre compatible?â
âNo, thank you,â he said, not taking his eyes off the amber liquid.
It was perverse of him, but Ethan wanted to laugh at the shocked expression on her face when her second attempt failed.
He peeked at Cassie, grinning at how her green eyes narrowed in determination. She drummed her fingers on the bar top and then straightened.
Placing one hand on his jaw, she angled his face toward hers, her smile coquettish. âI think destiny wants us to be together, and you should never argue with destiny.â
âUh-huh,â he said dismissively, secretly enjoying himself and feeling the stress heâd been carrying lighten.
It took supreme willpower not to kiss the pout forming on her lips. Ethan wondered if she was ready to call it quits, but her annoyed look told him her competitive spirit had been activated.
âYou know, I believe that honesty is the best policy,â she drawled, making his heartbeat skip as she seductively traced one finger down his arm. âSo to be perfectly honest, I want to spend many more days with you.â
âSorry, Iâm married,â he said, perfectly deadpan.
This time, he did laugh when she let out a short, frustrated scream and pinched his biceps.
âYou try my patience, Ethan!â
Still laughing, he tugged her close, wrapping her in his arms. âIn my defense, love, youâve used better pick-up lines in the past.â
âOh, please. That was gold-tier flirting, Ramsey,â she said, incensed.
âIt must be hard with your sense of direction, never being able to find your way to a decent pick-up line,â he quipped, matching her earlier playfulness.
Cassie lifted one brow superciliously. âWere you expecting to have sex tonight? Because your chances are decreasing by the second.â
He grinned. âMy wife is pretty forgiving.â
She rolled her eyes but didnât argue the assertion.
They stayed that way for a few minutes, eyes locked on each other, the bar around them fading away. The longer the silence stretched between them, the more Ethan could feel his shoulders loosen and his mind clear.
âFeeling better?â Cassie asked, her voice whisper-soft so that only he could hear.
âYeah.â
âGood,â she said, smiling as she stepped back. âIâm going back to my friends now and leaving you to enjoy your airlock.â
Before she could walk away, Ethan reached for her hand, stroking the back of it with his thumb.
âCassieâŚâ he began, struggling to find the right words to capture how she made him feel, how much she had changed his life. But nothing came to mind.
âI know.â She squeezed his hand. âFinish your drink and then letâs go home.â
Home. For the longest time, he wasnât sure what that was. But now he knew. It was wherever she was.

Synopsis: Mal finds avoiding the truth is getting harder with each passing moment. This fic is Mal's POV of In the Midst of Battle. It also follows Promised Tomorrow in my Mal's POV series.
For one terrible moment, he thought he was too late. A flash of fear overcame him. His body tensed. His chest tightened. His pulse quickened.Â
He reacted.Â
This is what she'd done to him. In a few short weeks, she'd changed him. He cared. He wished he didn't, but there was no denying it now.Â
Fear. It was nothing more than an awareness of danger. It was a choice to give in to it, to flee, or to fight it. He always chose the latter. He would never let it win. He and fear were old friends. From his earliest days, fear was there in one form or another. Fear of being alone when his mom died. Fear of starving before his next meal. Fear of retribution for failing the Guild. Fear of being caught. Fear of a job going wrong.Â
Fear was a way of life. He never let it get to him. He couldn't. It was key to his success. But this time, he did. Her fear gave rise to something he hadn't let himself experience since his mother...
A flash of sunlight glistened off the silver-tipped spear as the grobtar reached for its weapon. She stood motionless, color draining from her face as her eyes focused on the small pool of blood before her from the creature she had wounded. He rushed toward her with reckless abandon across the deck of the Sun Maiden, adding to the growing list of mistakes he'd let himself make lately. Dodging an oncoming assault, he prayed to the gods he didn't believe in that he'd make it. The thought of anything happening to her...
As the injured grobtar charged her with renewed strength, she fell to the ground. The air rushed out of his lungs; he wouldn't make it. His fingers on his dagger, setting it sail. Before they could take purchase in the creature's flesh, she hoisted her blade from below, killing it with one fluid motion.
He met her step as the creature collapsed beside her, his eyes glistening with a pain he had long ago pushed down. He reached out, cradling her face, worn with sprays of the sea and drops of blood. He leaned in, pressing a kiss on her forehead, the moment lingering despite the chaos around them.Â
He stumbled on his words, finding none to convey the depth of his conflicting emotions. The scene shifted as they continued the fight for their lives, his thoughts still preoccupied. He had risked his life.
Something had changed, and he couldn't hide anymore. This fear was new, something he'd been running from for as long as he could remember.
....it was the fear of losing someone who mattered.Â
And that realization?Â
He hated more than fear itself.Â
He had tried to make sense of things, push thoughts of her away, make excuses as to why he was staying, but none of them ever rang true.Â
This was different. This was a step in a direction he never planned to take. Somewhere along the way, she had become more than another job, another mark, another person passing through his life.
She mattered.
Not for the Shadow Court. Not for the shard. Not for the coin.
To him.
And that was the one thing he could not afford.
A/N: I'm really enjoying seeing things from Mal's POV, it's a lot of fun because he's got a lot going on in his head. I always HC that Mal and Daenarya always argue over who fell first and treat it as a game. Honestly, I would have said it could have gone either way, but exploring Mal's POV, I feel like it's definitely him, even if he is fighting it every second of the way.
So far, the first 4 drabbles in this series build on each other, so I do recommend reading all of them if you haven't! They can be read as one shots but they fit together better as a series.

A/N: Submission to @choicesmonthlychallenge June challenge, using prompt from February: Heart-stopping moments. Itâs thematically a follow-up, taking place a couple of weeks after Reminiscing.
Cassie Valentine never hid the fact that she was a romantic. Moonlit walks. Date nights over candlelight, where the wine flowed as easily as the conversation. Flowers the next dayâdaisies or asters, never roses.
Feeling alive while holding her loverâs hand as he walked her home afterward, followed by a goodnight kiss so deep it made her heart skip a beat.
During her four years at medical school, sheâd put aside visions of finding himâstanding beside herâpushing back the loneliness that often surfaced at the oddest times.
She eventually learned how to live with her own thoughts. To be comfortable in her own company.
But that dream of finding someone who made her feel electric just by being with him never quite faded.
Then, one morning, a woman collapsed in the waiting room just as Cassie was passing through the area, worried about being late for orientation on her first day of residency at Edenbrook Hospital.
She rushed to help, as did a handsome, young doctor, who quickly diagnosed the situation, pointed at her and barked, âYou. Rookie. Get in here.â
Her life had never been the same since. That was two years ago.
Now, she was heading into the last year of her residency. And the same doctor was walking her home on a warm spring night after a lovely date at a food truck festival on The Greenway.
They had bitten into flavorful kebab wraps, washing them down with cold sodas, surrounded by lively pop music drifting from the speakers. Settled on opposite sides of a picnic bench, they had talked the whole time, but she couldnât remember about what exactly.
The romantic evenings she had often dreamed of as a child were nothing compared to the reality of her life now.
And neither was the person she had fallen in love with.
Ethan Ramsey was devastatingly striking in a white lab coat, entirely too magnetic in a gray sports coat and dark jeans, his light blue button-down shirt open at the collar.
But he was hardly the prince of her fantasies, worshipping the ground she walked on, never arguing or disagreeing with her.
He was entirely too intelligent to put up with her nonsense, and unafraid to call her out when she was being ridiculous or wrong. He could be too serious at times, coming across as grumpy when he was anything but.
But then he smiled, soft and slow, and her heart beat just a shade faster than normal.
And when Ethan challenged herâat work, in bed, or on a random Tuesday nightâshe was ready to drop to her knees and ask him to marry her.
Cassie knew how he felt about marriage, and that was the only thing stopping her from doing just that.
Their footsteps echoed on the pavement. The night quiet around them, punctuated by the distant sound of traffic a few streets over.
She peeked sideways at his profile, the moonlight casting shadows so that he looked just a little bit mysterious, a touch dangerous.
She brushed her hand against his, once, twice, hoping he was smart enough to take the hint.
He was.
Ethan glanced at her briefly, the corner of his lips tilting upward when she stared at him, one brow raised, green eyes insistent.
He extended a hand, and Cassie interlaced her fingers with his. The tiny spark where their palms connected was just as exhilarating as the first time heâd touched her in that waiting room, steadying her nerves as the scalpel in her hand quivered.
Content to walk side by side, they occasionally smiled and stole glances under the streetlights. She winked at him and he grinned, shaking his head in amused exasperation.
His fingers tightened around hers as they neared her building, slowing them down to savor the last few moments.
And there, underneath the leafy shade of a red maple, Ethan pulled her close. She looped her arms around his neck, her fingers locking at the nape of his neck.
He leaned in, nipping her lips with tiny little kisses before claiming them with his own, kissing her deeply and sweetly until she felt lightheaded.
He wrapped his arms around her tightly, his palms warm on the small of her back. She kissed him back, opening herself to him, until they were both breathless.
At last, they parted, both panting lightly. Ethan traced a thumb over the corner of her lips, making her shiver.
She almost invited him inside for a nightcap, something more, but the goodnight kiss had been perfect. And she was afraid that if she asked him to stay the night she might just beg him to stay forever.
And it was too early in their relationship for that.
Stepping away before she did or said something she might regret, she squeezed his hand and then ran up the steps, using her key to let herself in. She closed the glass door behind her and turned around to see him watching her with a bemused look.
Cassie lifted one hand in a silent goodbye and he did the same before turning around to walk back towards where he had parked his car.
Alone at last, she caught sight of her reflection in the mirror beside the door and shook her head, smiling to herself.
The reality of loving someone was so much better than fantasy. And she couldnât wait to see where it took her.

This yearâs prompts are still being decided (though some of last yearâs prompts will be included), but feel free to suggest prompt ideas! Weâll try to get the official event post up as soon as possible!
As far as I know, no one is hosting a June Challenge as of now.
I don't have the time to do so with the book club and MC appreciation this month.

June 27: Style & Aesthetic: What is MCâs fashion style like? Do they have a signature color, designer, style, or must have item?
June 28: A day in the life: What is your MCs âevery dayâ life like? What do they do outside of the book?
June 29: Relationships & Dynamics : Who matters most to your MC? Friends, rivals, family, mentors, love interests, enemies, explore the dynamics that shaped them. This can also include pets!
June 30: Home & Safe Spaces What is MCâs home like? What is their design style? How has it changed over the years? Where is their safe place?

Guidelines & Rules
This is a Pixelberry/Choices event. Any MCs and OCs within those universes including the original Hollywood U and High School Story, as well as fan spinoff projects like It Lives Within are accepted. Spellfyre MCs and OCs are welcome to join on the last two days (July 3 and 4).
No AI generated content will be accepted
Older/previously posted submissions are accepted but are limited to up to 5 entries per day per user.
You aren't obligated to post for every day! You can post any day you feel like.
This event is MC-OC centric. While mentions of LIs and other characters are welcome, please keep the focus on the MCs and OCs. The prompts are only guidelines, and any MC- or OC-centric content will be accepted.
The MC doesn't have to be yours. Posting about your friend/mutual's MCs is counted as an entry and highly encouraged!
Everything is welcome! From a screenshot of your MC and fun facts, to art and fanfiction (and everything in between).
