How Can Whiplash Be Helped By Chiropractic Treatment?
Whiplash refers to an injury of the neck muscles due to rapid hyper-extension and hyper-flexion movements. Also referred to as the ‘Cervical Acceleration-Deceleration Injury’ this condition is caused by trauma or experiencing a sudden force (like a car accident taking place).
Each case of whiplash is different so there is no set chiropractic treatment used in every case. The chiropractor will assess every case individually to determine the appropriate treatments to effectively reduce pain and restore healthy joint, muscle and nerve function.
Common Symptoms Of Whiplash Include:
There are many common symptoms of a Whiplash injury. But the most common ones include:-
Reduced range of motion in the neck.
Pain occuring in the hands and arms.
Vertigo or feeling of dizziness.
Altered or blurred vision.
Numbness/or feeling of pins and needles in the hands and arms.
Difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness (which indicates injury to the larynx and esophagus).
An abnormal sensation of burning and tingling.
Pain in the upper back or shoulder area.
Chiropractic Whiplash Treatment:-
Dr Alli Lee- who rates as one of the best chiropractor Brisbane says:-
“One of the primary Whiplash treatments for joint dysfunction as well as spinal manipulation is gently moving the concerned joint with a short thrust or a slow mobilising movement towards where it is restricted. This spinal manipulation is also referred to as chiropractic adjustment.”
If the surrounding muscles have become very tight due to the trauma of whiplash, the chiropractor may employ a series of soft tissue techniques, including gentle stretching and trigger point therapy. This can relax the contracted muscles, reducing pain and improving the range of motion. It also prevents the tight muscles from pulling joint out of a healthy alignment.
An experienced chiropractor may recommend stretches to complete at home to supplement regular chiropractic treatments. These stretches may include:
Chin Tucks to be done in a lying down position.
Start by lying on your back.
Move the chin towards the chest as you look at the ceiling.
Hold it for 5 seconds. You should feel a light stretch at the neck the base of your head.
Side-To-Side Head Rotation to be done in a lying down position.
Begin by lying on your back.
Rotate chin towards your right shoulder and also use your hand to gently increase pressure.
Now move your chin your left shoulder, using you hand to increase pressure.
Hold for 20 seconds again.
Repeat 3-5 times on each side.
3. Side Bending in a lying position.
Start by lying on your back.
Tilt your head to the right, bringing your right ear to close to your shoulder.
Use your hand to gently increase the stretch.
Hold the pose for 20 seconds.
Do this 3-5 times for each side.
Dr Alli Lee further says:
“The whole point of performing these exercises is re-positioning any displaced intervertebral disc. It is also important to be conscious of your breathing.”
