ONEGAISHIMASU vs KUDASAI 

お願いします vs 下さい

Actually this is a good questions! Glad you asked~Here’s a few point to help you understand both phrase better.

First, both have a relatively same meaning and purpose, which is to request something / ask someone to help you with something.

Second,「おねがいします」ONEGAISHIMASU is a bit more polite.It’s more like: “Give me water, please”. In「ください」 KUDASAI, it’s: “Water, please”. But both can be used in casual conversation with no problem.

Third, in some case, you can only use「おねがいします」ONEGAISHIMASUSuch as when you are requesting for someone’s service (asking taxi driver to take you somewhere) or when you want to ask for someone in the phone, you can only use this phrase instead of 「ください」KUDASAI

Fourth, the formula is different. 

「おねがいします」ONEGAISHIMASU Formula :

[what you need]（を*）おねがいします [what you need]（o*）ONEGAISHIMASU* it’s safe to omit「を」o here.

Sample:mizu = waterみずをおねがいします / みずおねがいしますMIZU o ONEGAISHIMASU / MIZU ONEGAISHIMASU= Please give me water.………………………………………….. 

「ください」KUDASAI Formula :

[1] asking someone for something[what you need] をください [what you need] o KUDASAI*unlike above, you cannot omit the を here

Sample:みずをくださいMIZU o KUDASAI= Water, please.

[2] asking someone to do something[verb-て form] くださいSample:みずを飲んでくださいMIZU o NONDE KUDASAI= Please drink water (you ask someone to drink).

*The [2] form of「ください」KUDASAI might be quite hard for beginner, since you will need to conjugate the verb into て form. Beginner can ignore this one and learn it later on after learning the verb conjugation. Also note that it meant differently than the [1] form.
