I know this isn't art related but I just wanna geek out about this lol. One of the best things about this movie for me personally is the concept of the pink opaque and how that show in of itself is a queer allegory. It's not just some run-of-the-mill kids show, it's a horror adjacent monster of the week show for teens akin to Buffy the Vampire Slayer. From what we understand about the show, Tara and Isabel are forced to combat dangerous obstacles every week all the while still being high school students. Its obviously meant to be parallel to Owen and Maddy, who still had to grow up while dealing with their own external and internal struggles. However the biggest difference is that Tara and Isabel deal with a lot more dangerous circumstances but they are way more powerful and confident in themselves. And considering the fact that Owen and Maddy are just Isabel and Tara stuck in the midnight realm, I think it's a very clear that the pink opaque is meant to show the reality of actually coming out of the closet. There are anti queer laws that constantly target innocent people who are just being themselves and in a lot of places of the world it's a death sentence to actually be who you are in terms of being queer. The pink opaque represents the reality that being openly queer is very dangerous in a lot of places but people like Isabel and Tara have the power to overcome those challenges. I just love how I saw the TV glow isn't just about the horrors of being closeted it also shows that being queer means something different to many people. Owen is terrified of confronting their issues and ends up living a horrible soul crushing life because of it, however Isabel deals with horrific dangers every week but has the power and confidence to be able to deal with them. As a bisexual person myself, while the neighborhood I grew up in is very conservative, I still feel very privileged to grow up in New York where you get to see diversity and acceptance more often than other places. If I grew up in a small conservative town, I don't even think I'd even be able to handle that. However some people are forced to, and I feel like being able to endure that shows great strength.
