unfortunately, these words literally come from the same root, and the tenses are unhelpful:

LIE: present "she lies down" -> past "she lay down" -> past participle "she had lain down"

LAY: present "he lays something down" -> "he laid something down" -> "he had laid something down"

the point is that in "she lay down", that is NOT a use of the word LAY. that is a conjugation of the word LIE. which is why there is no further object in the sentence.

i feel like i usually see the error where the writer uses lay instead of lie, which might produce a sentence like "she lays down" or "she laid down", and you just kind of have to know look at the tense, and then work back to what base verb you've conjugated, and then seeing that LAY/LAID needs the object.
