Never Mind the Blizzard, an upcoming zine by and for fans of the Heroic Age of Antarctic exploration!
The zine aims to be an informal, low-pressure publication for creative work of any kind (art, comics, fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, anything else you can think of) as long as it concerns Antarctic life circa 1897-1922. Contributions do not have to be very “serious” or polished; true to polar periodical form, the main goal is just for us to entertain ourselves and each other throughout this long Antarctic winter.
The result will be a digital zine that can be downloaded for free or on a pay-what-you-want basis. Proceeds will go to the Antarctic Wildlife Research Fund (AWR).
Interested? Follow us here or on X / Gumroad to stay updated - and keep an eye out for a call for submissions very shortly!
Questions, comments, concerns: get in touch at [email protected] or via DM.
I’m SUPER excited to be able to share this now!!! We’re a small team and we’re so looking forward to hopefully making something really cool (ha, ha) with the polar community!! ❄️ Make sure to follow the account for updates to come!

I'm curious if Hussey ever had any recordings of his voice available, because he just seems like the type that someone would naturally want to record, and if anyone knew it would probably be you.
He does! Some of them we only have records of, like this 1926 one...
... But there are a few online I can share here!
The new Endurance documentary (2024) has some clips of him talking, if you can access that on streaming. The documentary they pull from is from 1957, and features multiple members of the crew together in the studio — and if you're ever interested in the full thing, it can be seen in-person at the BFI!
Here's a longer broadcast with multiple audio clips of the crew scattered throughout (Hussey at 25:10 and 51:26)
Here's a 'Witness History' podcast episode with old interview clips with the crew, including Hussey (it doesn't say which crew member is talking but his voice is at 3:28)
And this forum has a little interview with him on the BBC including some banjo-ing, which I'll post here:
I've been thinking about shackleham for a few months now and I'm obsessed with this scene. I think the shackleton accent here is a little bit irish and a little more rp overtop the actor's natural accent? whatever it is, the way he talks here is living in my head rent free

I'm going a little insane tonight because what do you MEAN the ship that the british government sent shackleton to rescue his crew from elephant island was the discovery??? the ship that sent him home from the antarctic twelve years earlier in unofficial disgrace?? the ship that probably housed all kinds of memories of scott and wilson and everybody else who wasn't with them?? I know he finagled the yelcho to rescue them because he didn't think the british government's ship would get there fast enough, but I wonder if he also partly did it because he knew it was the discovery they were sending. because he would have known it was a slower ship and his men needed him fast, and because he didn't want to use scott's old ship.
As hardcore polarheads know, the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch – holder of one of the world's greatest archives of documents artefacts from the Heroic Age Antarctic expeditions – has been closed for a while as they make the building safe against future earthquakes and bring it up to date for accessibility etc. The archives have been closed to visitors since the earthquake! We are all looking forward to being able to enjoy this resource agin someday in the future.
But they need our help. As the Human Histories curator Adele Jackson has put it:
I’m writing to ask if you will support the Museum by lodging an online submission to Christchurch City Council?
The City Council hasn’t named the Museum in its draft annual plan. Positive submissions will encourage the Council’s financial commitment to the Museum’s redevelopment to ensure the building reopens as planned in 2029. Submissions from overseas and within New Zealand are accepted.
Sending a submission takes only 2-3 minutes.
https://standupforyourmuseum.co.nz/
As I’m sending this to people across the world in different time zones, please will you make a submission before Wednesday 25 March, to meet the Council’s deadline. [NB: Given NZ's proximity to the International Date Line, those of us in the Western Hemisphere should submit before Tuesday the 24th, or this weekend just to be safe.]
We’re trying to get a high number of submissions to show just how much support there is for the Museum. Your submission will make a huge difference.
Speaking up for the museum is free, and only takes a few minutes! Let's show them how much the internet loves those cold boys!
Hussey holding Samson is one of the most well known Endurance photos, but the captions usually don’t mention him losing balance & tumbling over immediately after the pic was taken (screenshots from South 1919!)

hello! was just curious if, during your research, you've come across any specific songs that Hussey played on his banjo? I think Shackleton mentions 'It’s a Long Way to Tipperary' but have others been named? I am learning the banjo and would love to play them. thanks!
Hi there, so sorry if I'm late in answering this, I haven't checked tumblr for a while! I have got quite a list for you here though!
There are various sources for songs they sang together in general, with frequent mention of Hussey accompanying on the banjo... unless you’re taking Chippy’s assertion that Hussey only knew how to play 6 tunes at face value, because the number exceeds that somewhat!
(Above screenshot taken from the British Newspaper Archive)
Here are the songs I've found in my research, though I’m sure there are some missing:
The most well known aside from Tipperary would be Frankie Wild-o, an original song written & performed by James to the tune of Solomon Levi (lyrics here!)
Hurley recorded some of their original lyrics written to existing songs, which you can find here
From the diaries:
Marston is mentioned in lots of diaries for singing "Widdecombe Fair" at the Midwinter fest, and Orde-Lees says he also sang "Captain Stormalong", "The Golden Vanity", and "Johnny Hall" (which seems to be a variant of the folk song Sam Hall)
Wordie mentions Cheetham singing "False Flora", Chippy singing "Robbie Burns" and "The March of the Cameron Men", Wild singing "Ford o' Kabul River" and "Fourty Years On", and specifically talks of Hussey accompanying them in singing "Gaudeamus" and the whole crew singing "Auld Lang Syne"
Hussey mentions "Goodbye, Dolly Grey" and "White Wings"
Hurley writes of Huss playing "Home! Sweet Home!" and accompanying Wild with "Juanita"
Orde-Lees lists these songs: "The Son of a Gambolier" ("croaked" by Wordie), "A Sailor's Alphabet" and "Every Night" sung by How, and "Push it in under the door" sung by Rickinson
And then there are the songs recorded in Hussey’s book:
The sailors enjoyed “Break the News to Mother” and “Only a Beautiful Picture in a Beautiful Golden Frame”
The scientists enjoyed songs from the Student’s Song Books — Clark owned this one!
“The doctors regaled us with medical students’ songs”, whatever that entails
Others mentioned are Teddy O’Neill, Grandfather’s Chair, D'ye ken John Peel and Little Brown Jug
And that's all I can find right now! I should also acknowledge that, being 1914, there were some minstrel songs recorded that I obviously won’t list here, but it would be remiss to ignore them being mentioned throughout the above sources.
Anyway, apologies once again for the late reply but I hope you find this useful, and best of luck with your banjo-ing!!
P.S. ....And during my research for this, I have also started compiling a tier list of the best & worst singers of the crew, so I might share that sometime if that would be of interest 🙂↕️

The OGs of fanfic. They're in love. Could've chosen any of their quotes but this one I feel describes em best.

they're the originators of slash fiction!!! they said these lines in front of the entire [name] crew after a mission 😁this is only one of many very confession-like phrases they've said to each other ngl

This is a quote from a letter that A sent to B. They were both part of the [project] Expedition to Antarctica and grew very close during that time (getting up together at sunrise to read poetry and paint the sky). They both nearly died on the track southwards together with their third - the Captain S - and when they got back A was invalidated home. After the Expedition came back A tried to recruit B for his own expedition to Antarctica with numerous letters that all sound just like this. A tried to pull sooooo many strings to get B to join him but in the end he failed to convince him because B was busy researching birds.
