⋆ ˚｡⋆୨୧˚ hours lost.

how  was  it  that  michael  kept  getting  pulled  into  participating  ?  he  was  clearly  not  as  good  as  he  thought  he  was  at  avoiding  town  activities  given  his  recent  record.  with  a  heavy  sigh,  he  ducked  to  dodge  a  waterballoon  and  darted  to  a  spot  no  one  had  managed  to  flush  him  out  of  yet.  he  crouched,  considering  remaining  in  his  hiding  spot  until  it  was  over  and  it  was  then  that  he  felt  it  –  a  cold  slap  to  the  side  of  his  face.  the  balloon  exploded  on  contact,  water  dripping  down  as  he  blinked  in  shock.  he  hadn't  considered  the  possibility  of  someone  flanking  him.  “how  the fuck did  you  see  me  here  ?”

michael  hadn't  heard  the  door  open  in  a  long  while,  and  with  the  quiet  looming  all  around  him,  he  deemed  it  past  closing  time.  yet  he  hadn't  moved  once  since  sitting  down  to  sketch.  it  was  only  then  that  the  door  swung  open,  announcing  the  arrival  of  a  new  customer.  a  walk-in  this  late  ?  “we're  closed.”  he  yelled  out  without  turning  around,  adding  the  final  touches  to  his  sketch.

it  was  on  nights  like  this  that  michael  could  appreciate  palmview's  charm.  the  hour  had  slipped  long  past  two  and  the  town  had  settled  into  a  quiet  hum  as  he  walked  home.  one  too  many  special  brownies  in  his  system,  he  had  found  himself  at  the  tadpool  adventure  playground  with  no  desire  to  keep  walking.  the  springs  creaked  as  he  settled  on  the  trampoline,  the  cool  vinyl  a  welcome  relief  as  he  laid  back.  the  stars  above  him  blinked  and  he  had  been  sure  he  was  alone  –  yet  the  sound  of  footsteps  nearby  said  otherwise.

“  no,  i  don't  understand…  so,  this  is  like  a  mini  version  of  regular  golf  ?”  a  look  of  confusion  colored  her  features  as  she  scanned  the  room.  “where  are  all  the  golf  carts  ?  and  the  refreshing  drinks  ?  and  the  sun  !”  she  huffed,  this  was  not  appealing  to  her  as  it  first  appeared  to  be  but  she  had  completely  disregarded  the  mini  in  mini  golf  and  assumed  they  were  going  somewhere  else.  “i  DRESSED  for  this…”  her  idea  of  golfing  was  watching  other  people  play  while  driving  the  golf  cart  herself; she  never  actually  enjoyed  the  process  of  playing.

“  see  that  little  one  over  there  ?  ”   aydin  pointed  toward  the  last  turtle  in  the  lineup,  the  one  he'd  enrolled  and  place  his  bets  on.  “he's  going  to  dominate  this  entire  thing,  i  have  no  doubts.”  he  nodded  confidently.  “oken's  MY  champion.  –  placed  all  my  money  on  him  too.”

“  what's  the  deal  with  ollie's  treasure  ?  ”  aydin  questioned,  his  curiosity  after  walking  by  ollie's  oddities  reaching  it's  peak.  he  knew  they  could  only  get  a  HINT  as  to  where  it  was  but  he  also  knew  the  chances  of  it  being  fake  were  still  high.  “has  anyone  gone  looking  for  it  before  ?”

“  alright,  here's  the  deal.  ”   aydin  began,  pushing  his  drink  to  the  side  for  now  as  though  a  more  important  task  was  at  hand.  “two  truths  &  a  lie  except  if  i  guess  your  lie,  you  have  to  take  a  drink.  if  you  guess  mine,  then  i  have  to.  –  how  does  that  sound  ?”

sydney  took  pride  in  the  fact  that  the  words  opportunistic  &  efficient  always  followed  their  name.  while  other  people  questioned  how  they  survived  as  an  adult,  they  knew  exactly  how:  monetizing  every  minor  inconvenience  around  town.  it  was  why  she  stood  in  the  middle  of  coral  cove  park  sporting  a  ‘  catch flights, not alonzo's shift  ’  t-shirt,  right  next  to  a  foldable  table  where  she  seemed  to  have  a  number  of  printed  t-shirts  on  display.  along  with  team  t-shirts  for  the  teddy-julian-milo  drama  (  with  their  own  respective  banned  posters  and  hearts  around  teddy's  face  ),  she  had   ‘ hot  mayor  summer ’,   ‘ misted by lloyd ’, ‘ i  pay  taxes  for  THAT ’  &  shrek  marathon  t-shirts.  “that'll  be  forty-five  dollars.  remember,  no  refunds  !  thank  you  for  shopping  with  us,  have  a  nice  day  !”  she  waved  off  her  most  recent  customer  with  a  smile,  pocketing  the  bills  before  turning  to  hunt  for  her  next. 

lugging  around  her  giant  camera  was  a  daunting  task,  all  for  a  comment  daring  sierra  to  spend  the  night  at  the  palmview  lighthouse.  she  wasn't  entirely  sure  where  the  rumors  of  it  being  haunted  had  started  but  she  was  never  one  to  back  down  from  a  challenge.  she  had  asked  for  help  though  conveniently  managed  to  leave  out  the  haunted  lighthouse  sleepover  part.  “  oh,  come  on  !  don't  be  such  a  chicken,  it's  just  ONE  night.  besides,  it's  all  rumors.  i  don't  think  it's  really  haunted.  ”

“i  mean,  i'm  not  saying  i'm  doing  it  BUT  –  ”  magnolia  paused,  taking  a  sip  of  her  coffee  with  a  twirl  of  her  curls  around  her  fingers.  “hypothetically  speaking,  how  do  i  get  one  of  those regular  job  things  ?”  she  refuses  to  succumb  to  her  new  reality  but  the  lack  of  sponsorships  and  phone  calls  had  her  wondering  if  they  just  planned  on  icing  her  out  longer  or  if  it  was  about  to  turn  into  something  permanant. 

“so,  they  call  me  up  like…  do  you  wanna  be  on  survivor  ?”  magnolia  pauses  dramatically  to  emphasize  her  point  before  continuing,  “me  ?  on  SURVIVOR  ?  i  said,  ‘  you're  obviously  kidding.  ’   not  to  mention,  i  would  eat  up  everyone  else's  screen  time  and  that's  just  simply  unfair  !” she wasn't entirely sure what the other had asked of her, having ended up on a tangent of her own suddenly.

laundry  day  was  akin  to  punishment  in  sydney's  eyes  –  it  was  especially  worse  when  they  couldn't  escape  it  through  shopping.  they  sat  on  top  of  a  humming  dryer  as  they  glared  at  the  pile  of  clothes  inside  that  had  clearly  finished  their  cycle.  (  though,  if  anyone  were  to  ask  sydney  to  recount  the  events  of  the  day,  she  would  leave  out  how  it  had  only  been  five  minutes  ).  “that's  enough  !”  with  an  exasperated  sigh,  they  got  up  and  hauled  the  clothes  out  of  the  machine,  setting  them  on  top  of  the  dryer  and  replacing  them  with  their  own  laundry.  their  eyes  flickered  to  the  unclaimed  pile,  nestled  in  between  a  pair  of  jeans  was  a  t-shirt  that  caught  their  attention  instantly.  her  fingers  moved  to  pull  at  the  fabric,  curiosity  getting  the  better  of  her.  then  a  thought  crossed  her  mind:  no  one's  gonna  notice  if  it  goes  missing  suddenly,  right  ?

she'd  hidden  from  the  truth  long  enough  –  sierra  did  not  know  how  to  ride  a  bike  without  training  wheels.  it  just  wasn't  on  top  of  her  parents'  priorities,  who'd  enrolled  her  in  everything  yet  overlooked  a  simple  bike  lesson.  if  it  wasn't  something  to  brag  about,  they  didn't  care.  “you  know  what,  i  think  i'll  walk  instead…”  she  took  one  last  look  at  the  bike,  stepping  away  from  it  with  a  feigned  look  of  excitement.  “it's  a  beautiful  day  out  today  !”

sierra  had  made  a  lot  of  questionable  choices  in  her  life.  as  she  stood  on  the  opposite  end  of  her  front  door,  with  her  keys  on  the  other  side,  she  wondered  what  exactly  led  her  to  this  moment.  she  wasn't  the  most  organized  nor  the  most  punctual  person  and  more  often  than  not,  was  rushing  out  the  door  to  get  places.  she  turned  around  with  a  sigh  of  frustration,  eyes  landing  on  someone  walking  nearby  and  she  immediately  ran  over  to  them.  “hey  !  hi,  are you…  by  any  chance  free for a minute  ?”
