“Hello?” Something nudges him, a pressure he feels through the sole of his sneaker. “Hey, are you alive?” Todo cracks an eye open—the other one must be swollen and crusted over with blood, because it doesn’t budge. There’s a dark blob looming in front of him, blocking out the setting sun, and Todo blinks until he can see more clearly. A boy in a middle school gakuran slowly comes into view, with short cropped red hair and rectangular glasses, looking down at him warily. He shifts when Todo’s gaze finally focuses on him, but he doesn’t shrink away like most people do. He’s probably around Todo’s age. Maybe younger. “Oh, good,” he says lightly. “I thought I’d need to call the police.”
