my piece for the @fairytalesfromthesmp, gawain and the green knight! featuring gawain sapnap, and his unlikely travel buddy, the green knight's head that got left behind....
spyvhunter the whole 'get in the bed' sequence is actually insane. what do you mean George said 'Dream I need help' and then after Dream suggested they both sleep through the night (something not done in mhs) and demanded that George place his bed DIRECTLY beside his own and then they continued to yell at each other about getting in bed and then they finally did sleep through the night together but Dream was mad about George eating because he was 'cheating'

For @rcnhide, a little drabble for dnf day (and yes I know I'm late with it, I was super busy at work). It's not much but it's something and I hope you enjoy it!
It's just another day.
But at the same time, it isn't just another day.
It's June 15, and for as long as George can remember that day has been special to him. He hopes it will be forever, no matter what happens.
He's stretched out on the sofa right now, idly scrolling on twitter. There's a lot of fanart today of him and Dream and even though things between them aren't exactly the same as they were 10 years ago, George likes to think they've gotten better.
Like a fine wine, they've aged well.
"What're you smiling at?" Dream says, and George looks up just in time to see Dream sit on the edge of the sofa next to him. His smile softens at that, at the fact that even though there really isn't any room for him, they make room.
George looks at his phone, then back up at Dream. "Just scrolling twitter. It's actually... It's good today. Not as much drama as usual."
"Hmm, I wonder why," Dream winks and gives George a light nudge. "Can't have something to do with what day it is, does it?"
"Maybe," George giggles and nudges him back. "So are you going to do anything?"
"On twitter?" Dream shrugs. "Nah, I don't think so. But I would like to do something."
'Really?" George sets his phone down, curiosity piqued. "What did you have in mind?"
"Well," Dream wiggles a little until George is laying on his side to make more room. "I thought we could go out for lunch. Maybe swing by the PO Box to see if there's anything new and open packages together."
"With Sapnap?"
Dream shakes his head. "No, just us. It's the middle of June, after all. DNF day, as everyone on twitter is saying."
"So you did see it," George grins and gives Dream a playful little poke in the ticklish spot on the side of his stomach.
Dream giggles, then wraps one hand around George's to stop the all-out attack he knows his best friend is planning. "Yeah," he says. "I did. It's good. All of it. But anyway, how about lunch?"
George looks up at Dream, gaze flicking between green eyes before he sits up and tucks his legs beneath him. "Actually, can we order in and do something else?"
"Something else?" Dream raises one brow.
"Stop it," George replies, voice softer than he'd like it to be, although he can't bring himself to care. "Whatever thoughts are floating around in that big brain of yours aren't happening. At least not here. Not now."
Dream smiles. "And here I thought you were going to suggest reading Heatwaves."
"I mean, we can if you want," George rolls his eyes. "But I was thinking we could watch Better Call Saul."
"I'd like that," Dream says, and pulls his phone out of his pocket to order the food. "And George?"
"Yeah?"
Before George knows what's happening, Dream leans in to kiss his forehead before taking his hand to give it a light squeeze. "Happy middle of June."
"Same to you, idiot," George squeezes his hand back and returns the kiss with one on Dream's cheek. "Happy middle of June."
SAPNAP WAS INVITED TO MINECRAFT EXTREMO 3 :D It's a hard/difficult mc series that lasts for TWO WEEKS!! And each day lasts around 5 hours. I'm super happy because they introduced Team Mafia as a Huge Thing for the event, and they will be nerfed in fun ways!! We're gonna get so much content soon :3

My memory of The Birdcage (1996) is always that it's more dated and more difficult to watch than it actually is. You hear "drag-themed comedy from the 90s based on a musical from the 80s based on a play from the 70s" and you brace yourself just a little, right? But the film has a strong gay perspective, so the fruity fag jokes mostly come off as warmly affectionate. There is a surprising amount of poignancy in Robin Williams' portrayal of Armand, grudgingly agreeing to his beloved son's request that he go back into the closet for an evening ("do me a favor and don't talk to me for a while"). The drag club's staff attempting to redecorate the apartment with stuff straight people might like (a taxidermy moose head, an enormous crucifix, and Playboy magazine) is extremely funny. Albert's histrionics are a point of tension because he does often come off as a stereotypically pathetic/comic figure, but towards the end of the movie he makes it very clear that he's aware of how people see him, and asserts that trying to copy a stoic masculinity he doesn't possess for the sake of social approval would be more pathetic. In the 1983 musical adaptation, they give "Albert" (Albin) the only good song in the whole show, "I Am What I Am", which Gloria Gaynor covered to the delight of gays everywhere. Apparently Nathan Lane wasn't (publicly) out yet in 1996, which is amazing because it means that at one point in this movie you're watching a gay man playing a straight man playing a gay man playing a straight man, in a movie about how it's important to be yourself, an absurdity that does seem to encapsulate the state of gay America in the 90s.
I'm seeing a couple of posts circulating about the gay 90s and this movie. The above is a very good summary, and I think it's worth adding a few other points.
This movie got made because Robin Williams said yes to it (and it's important that Gene Hackman did as well). Williams in the 90s was a mega-star of a type that's not present in the current media environment (maybe Tom Cruise, but I personally think that's echo from his salad days). Even his flops made money on the back end in the video rental market, which also doesn't exist anymore (streaming is different). Hackman was on the other side of his A-list career but still Hollywood nobility if not full royalty.
Playing gay was considered career suicide in the 90s. There had been a number of actors who put lie to that belief stretching back decades, but this was Williams and Hackman (yes, being on screen next to a gay character was enough to get you blacklisted) saying "screw that" and doing it anyway.
Being gay and out was career suicide in the 90s.
Nathan Lane had a really nice gig going for himself. The Lion King put him into the Disney rep company with people like Williams, Bette Midler, and Whoopie Goldberg (check their IMBD list from the 90s--they were making bank at Disney).
Lane didn't come out until several years later (nice summary: https://deadline.com/2024/06/nathan-lane-robin-williams-advice-coming-out-birdcage-1235975010/).
I don't want to imply that this was a Sorkinized moment where everything changed because of one thing, but this was a very important movie that caused real movement in the needle on queer acceptance.
It also proved that there was a market for films with gay characters, which had the knock-on effect of gay filmmakers being able to find distributors of their gay-themed films. Which meant that more people than ever (queer and non-queer) got to see representation on-screen.
