@charadrxxmxrr - HOT-IN-THE-AIR BALLOON RIDES
"Look at how high up it is! So close to the sun! Chara, Chara! We should get on it!" Oliver's eyes are practically sparkling with awe as he watches all of these large balloons hovering up in the sky like that!
Their worst enemy has returned again â heights.
Chara hadnât wanted to come to the festival, but â itâs Oliver. Heâs their best friend here on the island, and so when he invited them? Chara said yes.
but . . . itâs heights. A hot air balloon. Chara is aware of the irony of their terror of high places.
â. . .
It is quite high.â
â. . .â
Kris hasnât told them many details. Not about their life, not about the things that they have to go home to.
But. if itâs anything like their own. . .
âYou are right. I did not see them. However.
If you are a bad person for not wanting to go home. . . if you are a bad person for wishing that Miss Noelle never returns here. . .
Then I am just as bad. i do not wish for Frisk to return here. I never want Asriel to end up here.
I want them to stay in their happily ever after on the surface. I do not want them to come here and see me. I do not want to face the bad things I did to Asriel. The things that Frisk and I felt we had to do.â
. . . Chara quietly squeezes Krisâ hand. They pet against the teens knuckles with their calloused fingertips; trying to comfort them, in their own way.
âFrisk deserves to have a happy life on the surface; Asriel deserves to see the sun. I do not think I deserve those things. I do not deserve to enjoy life by their sides. it is the same for you. Right. . .?â
Kris feels worse honestly. Chara's reasons for not wanting Frisk and Asriel to be here is so much purer than jealousy and... and fear. They shouldn't be scared of Noelle. They shouldn't be waking up in a cold sweat when she shows up in their dreams even when she's doing nothing but standing there. She's their friend.
A good person.
A good person they potentially broke because they couldn't keep the Soul in check.
And if it's not cold sweats, it's a thick, sickly despair that they feel. Because, like the sight of the world growing wet and dark, the sunset fading to monochrome, Susie standing in the water with Noelle in her arms, haloed by the sunset like she were radiating sunlight herself... that image will never leave their head.
"I... don't deserve to be with them. Or happy. It's selfish to want to keep being happy when I've done nothing to deserve it, all I've done is hurt and broken people."
â. . .
. . . . .
. . . okay.â
Thereâs no use in denying Krisâ feelings. Chara would be a hypocrite if they did. Instead, they continue to hold Krisâ hands with their own bandaged, scarred ones â
Scars that will never go away.
âIn that case. We can be bad here together. I will not leave you. You may think you do not deserve Susie and Noelle, but I think we deserve each other. You are.â
. . . hesitation. Charaâs throat flutters, before they swallow.
âYou are like a sibling to me. You do not have to force yourself to he happy with me. You do not have to force a smile.
we can be hurt. and. broken together. It is okay. I want to stay with you.â
Well. Itâs good that Kris doesnât think they can completely fool Chara; the child appreciates the bits of honesty that their teen companion manages to admit to. Dropping down to their knees, Chara moves to take Krisâ hand between their own two blistered ones, humming.
âIt is okay to be jealous,â they say, quiet and soft. A gentle place for Kris to lay their head, metaphorically speaking. âYou are not unforgivable for having normal emotions, Kris. The important part is that you do not lash out at those who do not deserve it. I know you would never do that of your own free will.â
The smile they wear is the same as always. Chara rubs their thumb against the back of Krisâ palm, like Toriel used to do for them. They know itâs not the same. But itâs enough.
âI think you are wrong about that though. I may not know Miss Noelle as well as you, but I think I know Susie better than most. She would not have more fun without you. You bring a special flavor to their lives. It is not a sin for you to want to experience things.â
Kris appreciates the attempts to ease their worries and anxieties, but they can't believe it. Not when they've seen every possible way that they can ruin everyone's lives. Dess's. Asriel's. Noelle's. Their whole family... all of them broken beyond repair in some way and they're at the heart of it all.
Even before the Soul was there, they were ruining lives.
Susie is the only good thing in that miserable existence.
"... You didn't see them." Kris mumbles, staring down at the small hands holding their's. "... they didn't even see me anymore even when we were all sitting together. I ended up, in one version I remember anyway, just dozing through the entire last few hours. Half listening, half wishing I was somewhere else, trying to be happy for them. Because they both deserve to be happy... Susie deserves a nice and honest partner. And Noelle..." They tense slightly, hand twitching and entire body looking as if they were ready to leap to their feet and run away.
"But Kris... you changed... You found out how to stop being Kris! And no one else has noticed... Because they don't want to! They don't want to see how INTERESTING you are now!"
Kris hangs their head low. They leave their thought hanging there, uncertain of how to complete it. So it remains a verbal loose thread they have no ability to tie up.
Quietly, Kris mumbles, "... The thing that makes me a bad person is wishing we never have to go back home, and that... Noelle doesn't come back here... That makes me a bad person."
â. . .â
Kris hasnât told them many details. Not about their life, not about the things that they have to go home to.
But. if itâs anything like their own. . .
âYou are right. I did not see them. However.

@charadrxxmxr asked
Kris doesn't move to acknowledge the juice or chocolate at first, staring through their own legs and the ground their feet were planted on. Their body reacts after a moment even if their brain doesn't, hands curling around the gifts to cradle them against their stomach like it would make the horrible feelings go away.
Jealousy, sorrow, sickness, fear.
Out of all of the memories, the lake is the one that sticks out the most. Understandably. In the quiet, over the pounding of their blood in their skull, they swear they can almost hear her voice urging them deeper and deeper and deeperâ
Kris swallows and the spell is broken. They blink, the world snapping into focus like they've only just now remembered where they were.
They look up from their lap to Chara, mind full of static and a life they couldn't have experienced.
Kris won't burden Chara with the lake. That's too much even for them to process.
"... It... I remembered things that I don't know how I could have experienced," Kris mumbles, tongue feeling too thick in their dry mouth. "andâ Susie and Noelle had a nice..." They don't know if they can trust themselves to say the word right now, not when there's so many things in their head at present. So they don't. "...a good time at the festival." Kris looks away, shoulders slumping. "... A really nice time. I didn't need to be there."
They open the juice bottle.
"... and I can't even pretend to be happy for them."
Well. Itâs good that Kris doesnât think they can completely fool Chara; the child appreciates the bits of honesty that their teen companion manages to admit to. Dropping down to their knees, Chara moves to take Krisâ hand between their own two blistered ones, humming.

You can count the number of people Chara feels they can be vulnerable with on one hand btw
8, 10, 14 for the meme!
8. Where and when do they seem most and least at ease? Why? How can you tell?
Chara feels most at ease gardening, or doing other small tasks that require concentration but not much thought. Their body relaxes, their posture becomes less rigid, and their expression becomes almost softer. They almost look their age when theyâre working with their flowers, or curled up with a book.
10. What energizes and drains them most?
Socializing in new environments drains Chara like nothing else. Theyâre an anxious and stressed child on a good day, so being thrown into things where they canât calculate the correct answer stresses them out beyond belief.
14. What do they care deeply about? What kind of loyalties, commitments, moral codes, life philosophies, passions, callings, or spirituality and faith do they have? How do these tend to be expressed?
Chara cares about their family. They care about their home. They care about being useful, and not being a burden on those they trust and love. Chara is loyal to the monsters that accepted them, to the underground that provided them a home. They gave up everything to try and ârepayâ the Dreemurr family for taking them in. They gave up their hopes and dreams in penance for the perceived sins that the humans had inflicted upon monsters. They tried to emulate the Angel for the ones they loved, even at the cost of their own life.
after careful selection, two numbers are deposited with love into your inbox:
24, 25
24. How do they present themselves socially? What distinguishes their âpersonaâ from their âtrue selfâ, and what causes that difference?
Chara presents themself as an independent, almost aloof child. Perfectly polite, but properly distanced. They donât cause trouble for the people around them, and try to keep to themself. To the grownups, theyâre precocious. To other children, theyâre a little odd.
thereâs a large difference between how they present themself and what their inner feelings really are, though. Chara is mischievous, and can get loud and excited when theyâre in an environment they trust. They like to make bad jokes and play and get messy. They like to laugh, and they like to play.
but even after a year of living here, they're still not comfortable enough to let their true self through
25. What do they need and want out of relationships, and how do they go about getting it?
Chara needs stability. They need unconditional love, and understanding. They need to move at their own pace but they also need a firm and constant presence that wonât go away if they backslide or get snappy or freak out.
Vash and Wolfwood, who deal with traumitized children in nomanâs land, are almost the perfect fit for helping Chara foster an environment they feel safe in.
âI do not need repayment for this. I tend to my flowers for my own reasons. I am a little selfish in that regard, especially because. . . I do not like to share this spot with others.â
They havenât shown Vash, or Susie or Legato or Kris or even Oliver, their best friend in the Spirale. They keep this place secret. safe.
Chara glances over as Flowery settles himself down, before,
âbe careful. There is a patch of buttercups beside you. If you put your hand on them, you could come back with a blister. Though. I am not sure if that is true for other flowers. Your skin may just be synthetic, and unaffected by. . . buttercups.â
They trail off, before digging into their backpack and holding out a water bottle. Seems like it was meant for Chara, since the seal is unbroken, but they donât mind giving it up.
"Well, if you say so. I'll just keep it a secret. Gift from me to you, little guy."
Doubtful anyone else could find this place without directions or luck. The only reason Flowery found it is because the flowers told him, and he doesn't want to betray their trust, or their caretaker's.
He glances over at his side, where a cluster of golden flowers stares up at him. Would they hurt him? Could they? This body looks human, but he already knows it isn't. Cut him, and petals spill out. And he knows they wouldn't hurt him on purpose, but everyone makes mistakes.
Still staring, he takes the proffered water. He doesn't need much; he's not a big flower. Just enough to moisten the soil.
"That's two I owe, guy," he says, putting the cap back on. "I'll repay the favor. And don't worry about these, I'll make sure they behave."
Quiet kid, which is fine. Flowery can talk for two or more, but for this moment, he falls silent. There's a few things to think about; black blades and dark fountains. Flower kings and lonely princes. Lightners and Darkners. Flowers.
Flowery looks up, the sun filling his eyes. He's not a guy to dwell on things. There are other things he wants to ask the kid about, but he holds his tongue. No, there's one thing.
"Hey little guy," he says, still looking up. "What's your name?"
âI appreciate your promise to silence. There are certain things people want to keep to themselves, and this. . . is one of mine.â
As Flowery contemplates, Chara settles themself back into the grass; they pick at the bandaids on their fingers, thoughtful as well. They wonder if Flowery is going to ask why they keep a poisonous plant as part of their garden. Maybe he wonât think of it.
âOh. You do not owe me anything. I am simply trying to be. . . kind.â
Chara doesnât like debts â whenever that be owing a debt or being owed one. The idea is icky in their stomach. The child hums, picking at a stray thread on their sweater.
â- oh! That is right. I have not told you. My name is â Chara.â
This man is a Darkner. Chara feels like telling him their last name will only bring more confusion, so they decide to not admit to it. Besides, it doesnât matter. Their last name. Their connections to players parallel to those in Flowerys life.
It would only complicate things.

flowers. Heâs flowers.
well, yeah. Chara could kind of tell. His name is Flowery. The only ones Chara knows who are that bad at naming things are . . .
Asgore and. . .
It doesnât matter. Something tightens in Charaâs chest. They donât look at Flowery, either â rather, their gaze is directed at the dirt. At the flowers theyâve lovingly tended to. The ones that Flowery says appreciate them.
âFlowers are neither human nor monster. But they have feelings. Even if they say they do not. They can lie just like any other creature. But I am glad. . . that I am doing right by the ones I care for.
. . .
my guardians trust my judgement. I am fairly independent. They do not need to know my every move. They can call me if they need me.â
"Hey, smart kid. Flowers are living, even if they're not alive. They depend on others to care for them. If they could... they'd return the favor. At least, the ones I know."
No point in waxing poetic. In thinking on what these flowers would do, if they had their own Dark Fountain. In thinking on what he wish he could've done. No point in dwelling on it.
"But it sounds like you get it," he says, finally turning back. He grins, same as he always does. "Not here to shower on your fun. Just making sure."
Wanted to make sure kindness was repaid, in some form. But it looks like he won't have to.
"This is your flower's, right? You don't mind if I take the petal off the metal for a bit?" says Flowery. He doesn't wait for a reply, just taking a seat right where he stands. The flowers beneath him seem to shift out of the way, so that not a single one is out of place.
"Been some time since I could do this. Relax. Kept myself busy, and now, I've got nothing but. Time."
Sunlight. Fresh air. What more does a flower need?
"Hey little guy. You said you're tending the flowers, right? Hate to bother, got any water? Reminisce builds up a thirst."
âI do not need repayment for this. I tend to my flowers for my own reasons. I am a little selfish in that regard, especially because. . . I do not like to share this spot with others.â

they donât know where this person came from, and frankly, Chara is a little scared to ask.
No one knows about their secret garden except for Anya. Just outside city limits, nearby where they had first set up their treehouse when they first arrived in this place, Charaâs garden full of flowers grows. They keep it from everyone; just a little something that they can go to when everything becomes too much.
. . . except, now, there is a man here.
â. . . it is fine.â
theyâre being very generous with that âfineâ
âIt is nice to see someone who understands flowers.â The guys name is a little too on the nose for Charas comfort, but heâs not Flowey, so. . . it could be worse. âThe city can be nice, but it is very restrictive sometimes. That is why I lived out here for four months when I first got here.â
Lots of humans in this city; way more than Flowery's ever seen in one place. Funny how the script is flipped here. But out here, in this patch of flowers, you could almost mistake it for home. Someone's home, anyways.
It's great that it's fine, so Flowery continues. "Sames to you, little guy. People forget since they don't move, but flowers are alive too. They have hopes and dreams, that kind of things. They can't always do much in return, but... they appreciate it."
He holds out his hand, and one of the flowers extends, growing high enough for him to look right at it without having to bend over. Holding it gently, Flowery smiles. "It takes a good heart to takes care of flowers. And these guys are telling me they're thankful."
Another smile, and the flower shrinks back into the ground. "I think I can trust you. Well, cards on the table, little guy," he says, turning back to the kid. "I'm flowers. Kindas. Long story, I don't wanna bore you."
Looking out towards the city, a breeze blows through the flowery patch, ruffling Flowery's clothes and sending loose petals into the air. He takes a deep breath- it reminds him of the flower shop.
"Sorry about the guy. Just feeling sentimental. Thinking about home, and so on. I'm not a big cityguy either, I get it."
He falls silent for a moment, simply enjoying the scenery. He's not a guy who likes to wax sentimental, but it's nice. If only the others could see it.
"Your parents know you're here?" he says, not looking over.

How much physical space do they use, active and at rest?
Chara tries to use as little physical space as necessary. They curl up, shy away, and hug around themself often. Even when theyâre active, their movements tend to be fairly restrained, as if theyâre worried about taking up too much space. though, recently, theyâve been a little more open, and a little more willing to lounge around in front of others
How are they bodily expressive? How do they use nonverbal cues such as their posture, stance, eyes, eyebrows, mouths, and hands?
Chara keeps themself tense at all times. Their default expression is a smile, but their hands, arms, and torso tend to be pretty restricted. Polite to a fault, Chara doesnât really emote to strangers. Itâs only when someone is closer to them thwr theyâre able to relax a bit.
How do people respond to them, and why might these responses differ?
People will either see a polite child thats maybe a bit of a loner or an absolutely traumatized mess thats desperately trying to cope with their situation. It all depends on how observant they are about Chara, and about how well Chara manages to mask.

"I see what you're going for. Sure! Thyme for courage. Iris for hope. Hollyhock for ambition! The language of flower's not something everyone gets! Am I wrong, or is it just a salad?"
Flowery laughs to himself, ankle-deep in flowers. Each step he takes is painstakingly careful, and not a single petal is out of place. It's nice that there's something like this in the city, and with such a view to boot. Perfect place for a guy to put down roots and rest a bit.
"Sorry little guy, hope I didn't startle you. Couldn't help but notice your work, and the care you put into it. Flower's have feeling's too, you know? But I'm sure I don't need to tell you."
Here, amidst the greenery, he feels the need to continue. "My name's Flowery. Your dad's my best Sorry about that! Not sure where that one came from. Just had to get away from the big city- a guy like me needs fresh air and sunshine!"
