( non-binary | they/he | tom holland ) —— isn’t that OTTO BAGMAN? yeah that is them, outside the three broomsticks! they used to be in RAVENCLAW but apparently they now work as a RADIO PERSONALITY at the WIZARDING WIRELESS NETWORK. sybill once said that they reminded her of always tinkering on muggle technology, disappearing for days at a time, reading the rules before breaking them, and throwing glitter which seems about right. anyway i’ve heard they’re still a bit CHAOTIC, EXTROVERTED and FLAKY, they’re TWENTY FOUR now but some things never change! i wonder how being a HALFBLOOD is affecting them after hogwarts, especially now they’re NEUTRAL? i guess only time will tell…

gus was wearing a grin as he sat back on the bench, arm stretched out over the back, not a care in the world. “no, alright, so I was having lunch with the girls today, and you’re never going to believe what they told me.”

          otto  wasn’t  really  paying  attention  to  their  surroundings  and  hadn’t  noticed  they  were  anywhere  near  gus  until  the  other  started  speaking  .   honestly  ,   they  probably  needed  to  stay  away  from  him  ,   but  they  didn’t  really  care  .   “ wait  what  girls  ?   and  what  kind  of  things  did  they  tell  you  ? ”   now  they  were  curious  and  wanted  to  know  what  he  was  talking  about  and  had  heard  .

“Three days? Otto that’s…” His brows furrowed and he got up from the window ledge, to get closer to his brother. “Is there anything I could do to help? I don’t know. Maybe you’d sleep better if you weren’t alone?” He didn’t like the sound of Otto’s plans which consisted in just letting things happen. “Maybe you could see a new one? Or I could see if there’s a half-blood doctor who could see you? We’ll figure it out, alright?” Ludo could afford it and he would have done anything to make his brother feel better.

“You’re fucking rude, and I’m telling mom you said that,” he replied with a smile on his face. “Douchebag.”

“Alright you really don’t need to go into details,” Ludo had to cover his eyes as he laughed. The last thing he wanted was to think of his baby brother’s sex life. Ludo still saw him as the little kid who got into Hogwarts a decade ago and it wasn’t easy for him to accept that he was an adult now. It was silly, but that most likely had to do with how little he had been seeing him while he was abroad. Ludo hadn’t seen his brother a lot and every summer, he was surprised to see how much he had grown. “I really don’t think I want to discuss my love life. It’s… heh. There’s someone I like, I just need to be brave and tell her how I feel.” And that’s all he would tell his brother.

          “ it’s  normal  when  i  get  into  my  research  ,   don’t  worry  about  it  .   it’s  happened  before  .   it’ll  happen  again  .   i’m  not  worried  about  it  . ”   really  this  was  a  normal  thing  for  them  and  it  was  weird  for  them  to  to  get  actual  sleep  .   otto  knew  it  was  a  bad  thing  ,   but  that’s  how  it  was  .   “ well  i  don’t  always  sleep  alone  ,   you  know  .   just  sometimes  .   besides  ,   when  i  get  into  research  ,   i   get  into  it  .   it’s  important  you  know  .   my  job  and  all  that  .   we  can’t  all  fly  around  on  brooms  and  give  motivational  speeches  to  our  friends  as  jobs  . ”   otto  had  always  been  one  of  those  people  that  that  went  with  the  flow  because  actually  making  plans  seemed  to  be  a  lot  more  trouble  than  just  letting  things  happen  .   otto  was  just  that  type  of  person  who  would  rather  not  stress  about  things  that  were  supposed  to  happen  .   “ but  i’m  fine  .   i  don’t  know  what  it’s  a  big  deal  .   if  something  was  really  wrong  ,   i’d  go  to  the  doctor  .   and  it’s  that  weird  brain  thing  that’s  the  problem  .   you  know  the  one  that  makes  me  hyper  all  the  time  . ”   it  wasn’t  a  big  deal  and  they  hated  that  ludo  always  had  to  make  a  big  deal  out  of  everything  when  otto  was  just  fine  .   “ you  don’t  have  to  worry  about  me  .   i  get  sleep  .   i  eat  .   i  even  exercise  .   i’m  doing  great  at  work  .   i  have  fun  and  spend  time  with  the  people  i  care  about  .   really  ,   i  have  a  good  life  .   i  don’t  need  things  to  change  right  now  .   there’s  already  too  much  change  happening  . ”   otto  didn’t  know  if  they  could  handle  more  change  when  everything  seemed  to  be  a  struggle  these  days  .

          “ oh  piss  off  ,   ludovic  .   mum  can’t  help  you  now  , ”   they  replied  sticking  their  tongue  out  at  their  brother  .   “ besides  ,   mum’s  more  likely  to  believe  me  .   i’m  the  baby  and  i’m  sure  she  wouldn’t  like  hearing  the  name  you  just  called  me  .   it’s  very  rude  . ”   they  shook  their  head  ,   acting  disappointed  in  ludo  like  their  parents  would  be  if  they  heard  that  language  .   

          “ i  didn’t  go  into  details  about  it  ,   but  now  that  i  know  it  makes  you  squeamish  ,   i  might  just  do  that  . ”   otto  obviously  was  not  keen  on  talking  in  detail  about  their  sex  life  with  their  brother  ,   but  a  little  teasing  never  hurt  .   they  knew  that  ludo  had  a  difficult  time  accepting  that  otto  was  an  adult  .   they  had  their  own  house  and  a  good  paying  job  .   they  had  a  stable  life  ,   even  as  unstable  as  they  were  .   otto  was  happy  ,   despite  everything  else  going  on  and  they  were  doing  their  job  to  not  pay  attention  to  everything  and  not  get  pessimistic  about  the  world  when  there  were  so  many  good  things  to  think  about  .   “ i  can’t  believe  you  really  just  got  on  me  about  telling  dmitry  how  i  felt  when  you  have  some  mystery  girl  you  have  a  crush  on  and  you  won’t  tell  her  .   earth  to  ludo  ,   i’m  actually  with  my  person  .   if  you  don’t  take  initiative  and  tell  her  how  you  feel  ,   you’ll  probably  end  up  being  single  and  alone  for  the  rest  of  your  life  .   i’d  lend  you  goober  ,   but  i’m  rather  attached  to  the  little  fellow  ,   so  i’ll  have  to  go  find  some  other  cat  for  you  to  own  . ”   otto  snorted  at  their  own  joke  .   “ you  know  plenty  of  people  were  married  by  the  time  they  were  your  age  .   mum  and  dad  were  married   super  early  .   when  are  you  gonna  fall  in  love  ?   they  should  be  alive  to  watch  at  least  one  of  their  children  get  married  and  since  that  won’t  be  me  , ”   otto  placed  their  hand  on  their  brother’s  shoulder  ,   “ it’s  gotta  be  you  .   don’t  wanna  disappoint  mum  and  dad  now  do  you  ? ”

“i’m the nosy, french bastard, the fabulous one, with the auror boyfriend. you won’t forget again, I promise. i’m memorable.” he grinned, and the smile grew as otto explained the reasoning behind the rule, bringing his hands together to clap only the tips of his fingers. “for what it’s worth, I shouldn’t be trusted either, but dmitry doesn’t need to know that. i blew up a brand new potions lab at beauxbatons, on accident, the very first week they let us use it. as long as we don’t set anything on fire that we can’t fix, he doesn’t have to know what we’ve been doing in there. so there’s something you know now, something fun, or a few things, I suppose. I don’t know that I know all that much more than you do, but maybe. I know we have a few things in common, but you can ask me anything, too, this will be fun.” alright, fine. maybe he had already decided he’d liked otto before he’d met them, but .. meeting them had certainly sealed it. oh, dmitry had no idea what a mistake he’d made, but jean-luc was thrilled to be making a new friend like otto. “you know what? you are. you are delightful. and so am i.” sure, he could’ve waited to see if otto agreed with him, but jl wasn’t going to take that chance. “ay, pues, you’re going love the puzzle that is jean-luc claudio allaire alvarez, then, my friend, because I am the quarter veela son of a disowned political powerhouse pureblood and a half-veela supermodel, raised above a very expensive, french, muggle bookshop. ask me anything, i’ve partied with warhol, I love weird.”

          “ as  an  auror’s  boyfriend  and  a  lawyer’s  significant  annoyance  ,   shouldn’t  we  be  each  other’s  mortal  enemies  ? ”   otto  was  only  teasing  ,   though  it  was  curious  that  jean - luc  and  dmitry  were  friends  knowing  that  information  .   otto  would  file  that  information  away  .   “ i  hope  your  boyfriend  never  arrests  me  for  anything  . ”   honestly  ,   that  was  more  likely  than  not  ,   since  otto  was  a  mess  and  did  break  the  law  more  often  than  not  .   “ you  blew  up  a  potions  lab  !? ”   otto  exclaimed  louder  than  they  meant  to  .   they  couldn’t  help  but  laugh  at  that  .   “ i  don’t  think  i’m  that  bad  .   most  of  the  time  .   but  i  don’t  know  ,   cereal  . ”   there  wasn’t  any  fire  involved  in  making  cereal  and  otto  still  had  no  idea  how  that  had  happened  .   either  way  ,   as  long  as  nothing  bad  happened  ,   otto  didn’t  care  what  they  did  in  the  kitchen  ,   but  dmitry  would  never  forgive  them  if  they  got  hurt  .   “ he  just  really  loves  his  kitchen  . ”   and  it  was  a  nice  kitchen  .   unlike  the  shitty  one  in  otto’s  place  .   “ obviously  we  are  both  delightful  people  .   i  wouldn’t  have  it  any  other  way  .   but  of  course  ,   you  cannot  take  the  spot  of  my  best  friend  . ”   but  eventually  ,   maybe  a  really  good  friend  would  be  nice  .   otto  didn’t  have  nearly  enough  of  those  and  they  seemed  to  be  a  good  match  in  personality  .   that  was  always  important  .   “ you  lived  above  a  bookshop  ?   wow  ,   that’s  so  cool  .”   otto  wanted  to  know  more  ,   though  it  was  early  and  for  some  reason  they  couldn’t  think  of  a  single  thing  that  would  make  sense  to  ask  .   “ i  am  a  strange   type  of  weird  .   have  you  listened  to  my  show  ? ”

“I know, I know, but that’s my own fault for trying to surprise you with lunch. can’t ask you ahead of time.” she shrugged, letting it go, because that time, it wasn’t like anything had really been going on, and she knew better than to attempt to show up unnannounced anyways, though it rarely stopped her. “on the moon, no, unfortunately, but at cape kennedy, yes, actually. they launched the apollo eleven rocket at six thirtytwo in the morning, and i have never seen anything like it before or since. it was incredible. and then about … oh, nearly eight thirty the next night, we watched on the television while they walked on the moon. they took a camera, there was a live feed. we could probably find it somewhere, you can see!” with her mind on space, mina was likely to get lost in her thoughts, but that didn’t last long. with her nerves, though, mina appreciated the offered hand, sliding her own into it though she didn’t truly need it; it was just nice sometimes, to hold hands with your friends, and she gave otto’s a squeeze, even though they, as predicted, laughed at her. “otto that’s mean!” she couldn’t help laughing with them, but the big smiled betrayed how excited she was, even over the amusement at the way .. the bagmans always were with each other. “no, that’s definitely not the conversation he and I had. and I wouldn’t be a good weapon against you, anyways, right, so .. yeah, serious.” she had to laugh again, though, at the next offering. “no that’s okay, I can beat him up myself if I need to. you’re not mad?” 

          “ i’d  tell  you  the  same  thing  i  told  ludo  ,   but  i  don’t  care  if  you  see  me  with  someone  i  brought  home  . ”   sometimes  otto  wondered  if  everyone  thought  they  were  incapable  of  living  on  their  own  .   he  knew  better  with  mina  ,   but  sometimes  they  didn’t  like  getting  checked  up  on  .   “ i’ll  only  ditch  a  boy  for  you  . ”   but  it  wasn’t  as  if  otto  did  bring  people  home  .   they  were  cautious  about  who  they  let  into  their  house  .   “ that’s  unfortunate  ,   i’m  curious  what  it’s  like  .   and  how  they  do  it  because  it  isn’t  like  we  can  just  ...  go  there  .   all  these  books  are  helpful  ,   but  i wanna  know  more  .   maybe  i  can  have  you  come  on  the  show  and  talk  about  it  ! ”   they  exclaimed  .   clearly  this  was  something  they  were  going  to  have  to  get  into  at  some  point  because  otto  was  thrilled  to  know  she’d  seen  the  launch  .   they  didn’t  know  who  else  to  ask  and  they  were  curious  about  the  whole  thing  .   muggles  were  very  obsessed  with  space  and  it  was  fascinating  .   “ what  do  you  mean  i’m  mean  ?   he  insults  me  all  the  time  . ”   like  normal  siblings  teased  each  other  ,   but  mina  didn’t  need  to  know  that  bit  .   “ no  you’re  right  .   dmitry  would’ve  been  a  better  choice  for  that  ,   but  i’d  probably  just  cry  if  that  was  the  case  .   and  anyway  that’s  a  silly  thought  because  we’re  whatever  . ”   otto  tilted  their  head  to  the  side  .   “ of  course  i’m  not  mad  mina  !   can  i  start  plannig  the  wedding  ?   when  are  you  becoming  my  sister  . ”

      ❝   okay,   i   swear   this   is   not   what   this   looks   like.   ❞

“yeah, that makes sense,” mina said, shaking her head as soft, gentle laughter escaped her; of course otto had been wrapped up in a new topic, they usually were, and since it hadn’t been an important trip, mina wasn’t too concerned about it. “I do know a little about space, though, if you’re interested. I mean, i’m no expert or anything, but I watched them put men on the moon, so .. I know some, I guess.” but mina knew she was getting distracted, and, though, she truly was willing to let herself be … it was more important that she share her news, and she knew it. so, really, ottos’s assurance that she wasn’t interrupting left her with no excuses, even if, truly, she had no plan. “it’s … mmm… there’re so many ways to say this, I don’t even…” she had to laugh at herself, pausing and shaking her head once more. “i’m being stupid, i know i am, and you’re probably going to laugh at me, but … what if .. your brother and i … were a couple? would that be a problem? or is that something that we could … be excited about together?”

         otto  always  seemed  to  be  in  the  middle  of  research  for  their  show  which  some  people  might  hate  ,   but  otto  loved  .   their  job  was  the  only  thing  that  made  sense  to  them  on  days  when  the  world  seemed  to  be  too  much  .   “ you  know  if  you  can’t  find  me  at  the  station  .   i  usually  tell  him  where  i’m  going  for  research  . ”   otto  couldn’t  always  be  at  work  .   since  their  show  wasn’t  on  all  the  time  ,   they  weren’t  always  at  the  station  .   “ you  were  there  ? ”   they  exclaimed  ,   eyes  going  wide  as  they  glanced  at  their  friend  .   space  had  never  been  something  that  otto  paid  attention  to  until  recently  and  they’d  gotten  a  book  on  it  .   they  put  the  research  books  to  the  side  though  ,   when  mina   continued  to  talk  .   she  looked  worried  and  otto  started  to  feel  a  bit  anxious  ,   even  when  she  laughed  .   they  frowned  ,   and  tiled  their  head  to  the  side  ,   cautiously  reaching  a  hand  across  the  table  for  mina  to  take  if  she  wanted  it  .   but  then  she  finished  her  thought  and  otto  couldn’t  help  actually  laughing  .   “ but  you’re  too  good  for  ludo  ! ”   they  looked  at  mina  and  the  look  on  her  face  told  them  she  was  being  serious  .   “ wait  you’re  serious  ?   this  isn’t  because  i  made  fun  of  him  for  being  single  and  he’s  trying  to  get  back  at  me  ?   ludo  makes  you  happy  ?   because  i’ll  beat  him  up  if  he  doesn’t  . ”

                 ❝      playing   with   fate   might   be   what   we’re   supposed   to   do   anyway      ❞

         “ I can send an owl, tell you when I plan to visit, or we can just say I’ll come every Thursday morning?” Because that’s when keepers trained alone, and that meant he had the whole morning off. “I don’t want to startle you or trigger anxiety, you know?” That was the last thing he wanted, and his visits were meant to do the exact opposite of that, for the both of them. He would always have worried about Otto, even if he had been less chaotic. He worried for everyone, whether it was Mina, their parents, his teammates, Gus, or even his muggle neighbors.

          “ Alright, I get it,” in moments like those, he wanted to wrap his arms around his brother and take in charge that demon for a couple of days, for them to rest a little. “If I were that demon, I would be terrified, Otto. You’re one of the strongest willed people I know,” and he wasn’t saying that to be nice. When his brother set his mind on something, there was no quitting. Ludo admired that. In a way, they both had that trait of character. Neither of them were the kind to give up. “Maybe you should talk to a muggle doctor about that, see if they have any idea what it could be,” he offered. Ludo knew it was not the safest thing to do, “I don’t know if that’s very careful though, with everything that’s going on…” The beater looked down, his gaze getting lost in the tile joints. Crossing his arms over his chest, he sighed. It was hard to keep a bright smile when everything was so dim out there.

         “ Wait a second,” with the other being so casual about the whole ordeal, Ludo almost could have let it slipped. “I knew it. No way you would have let just anyone in here,” his smile was back then, brighter than ever. “Heh, life’s short. If you like him, you should tell him,” he shrugged. Easier said than done. 

         otto  nodded  at  their  brother’s  statement  and  the  following  question  .   “ that  works  .   i’m  usually  here  . ”   the  only  time  they  weren’t  here  was  when  they  spent  the  night  with  someone  and  these  days  that  hadn’t  been  happening  as  often  .   “ you’re  not  going  to  startle  me  ,   but  like  what  if  i  had  someone  over  ? ”   it  was  almost  an  absurd  since  otto  was  careful  about  who  they  gave  their  address  out  to  .   “ it’d  be  really  awkward  if  i  hooked  up  with  someone  and  then  suddenly  my  brother  was  over  here  .   i  don’t  think  you  need  to  know  about  everyone  i  sleep  with  . ”   otto  looked  at  ludo  with  a  vaguely  innocent  look  on  their  face  .   even  though  they  knew  that  ludo  would  never  stop  worrying  about  them  ,   it  was  really  annoying  when  he  did  just  show  up  .  

         “ then  maybe  you  can  get  the  demon  to  let  me  sleep  .   it’s  been  like  three  days  i  think  . ”   they  were  exhausted  and  the  more  they  wanted  to  sleep  the  more  frustrating  this  got  .   honestly  they  were  about  just  about  to  take  a  potion  to  get  some  rest  but  they  never  felt  like  that  was  good  enough  rest  .   “ no  ,   that’s  not  what  i  want  to  do  .   they’re  just  going  to  tell  me  that’s  my  adhd  and  not  help  me  .   i’ve  been  down  this  road  before  .   don’t  worry  about  me  .   it’ll  be  fine  .   eventually  i  crash  and  my  next  few  shows  are  planned  out  so  i  can  focus  on  myself  for  the  next  few  days  . ”   they  shrugged  .  

“i grew up in a place where a lot of us had to do chores so no, i guess i don’t mind it.” she says with a shrug. 

“No, that really happened. The Americans have done it a half dozen times now– I’ve got a couple books about the launches around here somewhere, but they’re in Russian.” Dmitry moved the papers he’d been working on to the nightstand, figuring the chance of him getting back to them tonight was rather small. “Sorry, I didn’t catch it the first time.” He had, but that excuse was what made lip reading worth the effort. “Lord Stair’s the one that’s cute, look at him all curled up.”

          “ what  ?!   multiple  times  ?   they’ve  been  to  space  more  than  once  ? ”   otto  looked  up  as  if  they  could  see  through  the  ceiling  .   “ i  think  you’ve  just  found  the  next  topic  for  my  show  .   i’ve  never  thought  too  much  about  space  . ”   they  smiled  at  dmitry  .   “ i  think  you  ignored  it  on  purpose  ,   but  more  than  one  being  in  this  room  can  be  cute  .   you’re  cute  ,   lord  stair’s  cute  ,   i’m  cute  .   and  you  know  what  i  think  ? ”   they  grinned  .   “ that  the  two  cute  people  in  this  room  should  cuddle  ,   maybe  i  can  get  a  kiss  . ”   otto  really  liked  this  man  more  than  they  cared  to  admit  because  that  was  scary  . 

   “ Heh, I don’t know. I guess I feel kinda bad for the years I didn’t visit you at all,” not by choice, but living abroad meant that you couldn’t just move from one country to another like that, especially in a time of war. Even sending owls was complicated, as the ministry sometimes had to make sure it was nothing dangerous. “But I understand. I’ll try to visit less often then,” it meant more time spent on the things he put aside because he was too busy.

        “ You can’t possibly believe that all those injuries aren’t going to have long term consequences,” Ludo knew that any living body had its limits, even his own. “Just try to be careful, alright?” Otto said it them-self, he had plenty of people who cared for him, and so, they had to do their best not to hurt them, whether it be him, Mina or Dmitri.

“Speaking of which, I ran into Dmitri the other day,” did it count as talking about Otto? It didn’t, did it? “He seems nice,” and there was something about his tone that implied a thousands of questions Ludo wanted to ask : who is he, where did you met, do you like him, does he live here, where does he work, what does he like, are you two serious? Instead he remained silent, a small, idle smile on his face. “You two are friends?” He cleared his throat, obvious as ever, and turned to look outside the window.

          “ why  ?   i  was  perfectly  fine  with  seeing  you  when  you  did  visit  .   it’s  not  like  i  expected  you  to  i  donno  stick  around  and  like  take  care  of  your  kid  sibling  . ”   otto  didn’t  see  why  anyone  that  to  look  after  them  the  way  they  did  .   they  were  fine  with  ludo  visiting  except  when  it  felt  like  they  were  making  sure  otto  was  still  safe  .   it  made  them  feel  like  a  burden  .   everyone  kept  acting  like  otto  couldn’t  handle  the  real  world  on  their  own  and  it  was  kind  of  annoying  .   “ it’s  not  that  i  mind  if  you  come  to  visit  .   i  just  want  warning  you  know  .   like  if  you  just  show  up  then  i  feel  like  something  bad  happened  and  i  just  can’t  handle  that  right  now  . ”   otto  felt  bad  saying  that  even  if  it  was  the  truth  . 

          “ look  even  mum  says  i’m  perfectly  fine  .   for  like  someone  like  me  i  mean  .   i  am  careful  though  . ”   they  weren’t  always  careful  and  otto  didn’t  have  any  long  term  problems  to  deal  with  right  now  .   “ i’m  fine  .   really  . ”   they  weren’t  just  saying  that  to  get  him  off  their  back  .   “ it’s  not  my  physical  health  you  need  to  worry  about  .   sometimes  i  feel  like  there’s  a  demon  running  around  in  my  mind  and  i  can’t  calm  it  down  . ”   otto  really  hated  days  when  they  felt  exhausted  and  yet  they  couldn’t  settle  their  brain  . 

to think her grin had gotten larger upon the smile she received might have seemed impossible, but grow it did; there was nothing in the world quite like an oreo toto danger trouble frankenstein beardperson greeting. “nope, definitely don’t think you’re at work. you weren’t the other day, either, what happened?? I met alecto though, you’re right, very nice.” and, though, she really did have pajamas for the cat, mina wasn’t really interested in chasing him down just then. “i’m not interrupting anything, am I? i have something to tell you, and i’m pretty sure it’s going to be very distracting if I am interrupting. but exciting! well, hopefully. for you. it’s exciting for me.”

          otto’s  mind  was  only  half  on  currently  ,   so  it  took  a  moment  for  them  to  realize  that  mina  had  walked  in  their  room  and  they  weren’t  just  talking  to  no  one  .   “ huh  ?   the  other  day  ?   i  was  probably  doing  some  research  .   i’m  working  on  a  new  series  for  my  show  on  space  i  guess  .   so  i needed  to  do  some  research  ‘cause  i  know  nothing  about  space  . ”   otto  smiled  and  was  glad  that  mina  and  alecto  seemed  to  get  along  because  it  stressed  them  out  when  people  they  hung  out  around  didn’t  get  along  .   “ hm  ?   not  interrupting  anything  .   i  can  put  this  away  for  now  .   what’s  going  on  ? ”
