so wildly obnoxious when you agree with the starting point of someone's stance only for them to hard turn into things you DON'T agree with and now you have to defend the thing that was originally annoying you
"too many authors in the current market are focusing on selling 'spice' instead of telling interesting stories"
"oh yeah, i agree. i started reading one that i heard a lot about and it just wasn't-"
"and it's all of these women reading their fucking mommy porn out in public like FREAKS"
*through gritted teeth* "people should be allowed to read whatever they want, and actually these books should be left alone and you should shut up about it"
*jumps up and down waving my hands and yelling in a crowd* DISCORD WAS NEVER MEANT TO REPLACE FORUMS AND WIKIS!!! Genuinely disturbing how missionary "work" is still so normal. Like I do not understand how anyone can listen to someone talk about their cutesy little Christian colonizer vacation to a deeply exploited community and not just be horrified and disgusted.
Not just normal, but lauded. Missionaries are praised for (supposedly) bringing resources and infrastructure to impoverished people without it ever being acknowledged that 1) that aid is contingent on converting and abandoning local beliefs and traditions and 2) those communities are usually only impoverished in the first place because of Christian colonialist empires.
It boggles my mind that people will talk about somebody's missionary work like it was some act of charity and self-sacrifice when it's really just going up to a bunch of people who are starving to death and telling them you'll give them some rice if they join your cult. It's 50% White Man's Burden and 50% extortion racket.
Not to mention how often that "aid" is useless to the people who are suffering.
Missionary-built houses are often made with incredibly cheap materials by people who are absolutely not qualified for that work AND they aren't designed with the cultural and social needs of the people they're for or the climate and infrastructure of the area in mind. Immediate aid like bottled water produce even more trash and pollutants that many communities are not equipped to handle. Farming methods taught often aren't designed for the area or climate and don't fully provide for the nutritional needs of the community (and then those people are demonized for poaching by Westerners who don't understand that an animal being endangered means very little when your family is starving). Even educational materials are poorly translated, Western-centric, and strictly Christian (along with often being controlled and modified by extremist, militant, and terrorist groups that control the areas).
And on top of all that, it doesn't include or involve any of the local community in any part of the process. Nobody local is distributing it. Nobody local is building it. Nobody local is producing it. Nobody local is getting training, employment, wages, or any kind of permanent uplifting infrastructure. Missionary aid creates more dependence on the Western Christian apparatus instead of creating any kind of Self-Sufficiency.

sometimes I’m reminded that there are still people who don’t know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers — and the site’s sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms — and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.
ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.
ao3’s main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.
there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I don’t want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being a bitch, use their tagging system properly and you won’t see the things you don’t want to see.
it’s your job to curate what you see. it’s not other people’s jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.
also you cannot censor “only the things you personally hate” without expecting everything else, that isn’t of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think “why do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? they’re grooming children”.
if you allow the things that you hate to be censored — because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.

gonna go ahead and reblog this to make it clear this blog is safe for freaks
i don't fuck with purity culture bs
please recognize that it's just consverativism in a thinly veiled disguise trying to convince you it's actually about protecting you
it isn't
it's about control
filter what you don't wanna see and let the freaks be freaks
The tag exists so if you don't want to read it you can filter out those stories for yourself instead of censorship.
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/13/us/california-jewish-ethnic-identity.html?unlocked_article_code=1.5FA.YkQC.-vXGzQ7o0Hj-&smid=url-share
The state of California recognizes nearly 50 racial and ethnic identities for data collection, from American Indian to Samoan. Now it is considering adding one more: Jewish.
A bill facing a pivotal committee vote this week would require state agencies to include an optional box for Jewish ethnicity on all demographic data forms, from college applications to public assistance programs. Its passage would make California the first state to officially treat Jewishness as something more than a religion in this fashion — a shift more significant than it might seem.
Scholars of Jewish identity say that it has long posed challenges to American law and public discourse, because Jews have never fit into contemporary conceptual categories. In fact, the challenges — and misconceptions — go back centuries.
“When Jews received the rights of citizenship in European nation states, Jews were forced to think of themselves as a religion,” said Leora Batnitzky, professor of religion at Princeton University and author of “How Judaism Became a Religion.” “But this was always contested from an internal Jewish point of view.”
Plenty of proudly identified Jews do not attend synagogue or even believe in God — and Jewish tradition considers them to be Jews just the same. Jewish identity, like ethnic identity, is generally passed through parentage. But while outsiders cannot convert to another race or ethnicity, they can convert to Judaism. In 2021, the Pew Research Center found that only 11 percent of American Jews said that “being Jewish is mainly about religion,” with most preferring some combination of religion, ancestry and culture.
For its proponents in California, the bill, S.B. 1387, is an attempt to counter this confusion by making clear that “Jewish” means more than religion. Practically speaking, the bill aims to help the state quantify its Jewish population and to enable better data collection for hate crimes tracking and public health purposes — for example, by determining where to promote genetic screenings for diseases common in Jewish communities, or ensuring that antisemitic attacks are not misclassified on reporting forms.
But beyond these concrete impacts, the bill’s backers intend it to accomplish something less tangible: a first step toward acknowledging and demystifying the multifaceted nature of Jewish identity. The purpose of adding the Jewish ethnicity checkbox, they argue, is to break Jews out of the box.
The bill is a proposed — and disputed — solution to a very real problem. The complex nature of Jewishness has perplexed the courts, the culture and even the White House. In 2022, Whoopi Goldberg was suspended for two weeks as host of ABC’s “The View” and apologized after she said that the Holocaust was “not about race.” Her statement reflected a popular misconception that Jews have been persecuted in purely religious terms, when in fact, antisemites have long painted Jews as an inferior race.
And it’s not just celebrities who have been flummoxed by Jewish identity. It took until 1987 for American law to determine that Jews might be attacked on nonreligious grounds.
In 1982, a Maryland synagogue was vandalized by white supremacists. In response, the congregation sued the perpetrators under federal civil rights law. Its claims were initially dismissed by the lower courts. But in 1987, in Shaare Tefila v. Cobb, the Supreme Court unanimously reversed those decisions and ruled that Jewish people had the right to sue on grounds of racial discrimination.
Recent presidential administrations have also attempted to thread this needle. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaws discrimination in federally funded programs on the basis of race, color or national origin — but not religion.
In 2010, however, the Obama administration interpreted the law as applying to discrimination against Jews and members of other religious groups such as Muslims and Sikhs “when that discrimination is based on the group’s actual or perceived shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics, rather than its members’ religious practice.” In other words, what matters for the purposes of protection is not just how the victims see themselves but how a bigot sees them.
“You don’t have to prove that you look fundamentally different or have some fundamentally different physical characteristic in order to establish that you were subjected to racial discrimination,” explained Matthew Segal, a political science professor at Tufts University and co-director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s State Supreme Court Initiative.
“It is enough — whether you’re Jewish or Arab or anything else — to show that you were treated differently because someone looked at you that way.”
In 2019, the first Trump administration sought to build on this interpretation with an executive order that defined Jews as a nationality purely for the purposes of applying anti-discrimination protections to them. At the time, it caused some consternation among some observers who worried — before the full text of the order was released — that it would define Jews themselves as a nation. (Many Jews, particularly those in Israel, consider themselves part of a Jewish nation; others, including some staunch anti-Zionists, reject this framing.)
The California bill was conceived in response to this turbulent context. The bill’s author, State Senator Henry Stern, a Democrat, was motivated by personal experience. He grew up in an engaged Jewish home, but one that was not particularly religious. His father, the actor Daniel Stern, added the improvised line, “Happy Hanukkah, Marv,” in the otherwise Christmas-themed hit “Home Alone 2.”
Later in life, the younger Mr. Stern adopted more traditional Jewish practices, including wearing a yarmulke and observing the sabbath. As he tells it, he knows firsthand that Jewishness is more than religious observance.
“I got picked on in school as a Jew even though I didn’t wear a kipa, I didn’t have a Star of David. But they figured out I was a Jew and they wrote a swastika on the back of my backpack,” he recalled. “I wasn’t a white guy to them. I was a Jew to them.”
The bill has the backing of Jewish California, a large coalition of Jewish groups, as well as the California Federation of Teachers. But not everyone is on board; some progressive Jewish organizations, including Jewish Voice for Peace, have opposed it on various fiscal and ideological grounds.
At the same time, some of the Jewish groups that have lobbied against the bill have acknowledged the complexities it is meant to address, while disagreeing that this bill is the proper vehicle for doing so.
“Many American Jews, and probably even more in California, are mostly secular, not religiously observant,” the Sacramento chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace wrote in a statement. “If asked offhand, many of us might say we identify as culturally and/or ethnically Jewish. But we vehemently oppose SB 1387 for its wrong-headed oversimplification of identity, one that could well exacerbate antisemitism, among other unintended consequences.”
The bill, the group contends, risks flattening rather than broadening public understanding of Jewishness by compressing Jews into a single ethnicity. (Supporters counter that the box is voluntary and can be checked in conjunction with any other identity boxes.)
“I consider myself a Jew ethnically, but there are many different ethnicities,” David Mandel of Jewish Voice for Peace told the California assembly’s judiciary committee on June 9. “This ill-considered bill, very expensive bill, will not add any useful information for the state and would end up costing millions.”
Mr. Stern is comfortable with the opposition. “That’s what it is to be a Jew, in some ways,” he said. “Being really comfortable with tension, and being comfortable with paradoxes, and understanding that we’re a people, we’re a nation, we’re an ethnicity, we are a religion, too. We don’t fit naturally. And that’s why we’re such a pain.”
Laughing, he added: “It’ll give a lot of grist for people to argue at over kitchen tables, as we have been doing for over 3,000 years.”
I love all my main characters equally. *closes closet door to hide the shrine to one character in particular*
I love people in the tags talking about their oc blorbos from their brains that I have no context for. We all have favorite children.

I do enjoy a good visual gag, and an old favorite of mine is “there is Math on a Board in the background that contextually makes no sense.” This broadly comes in 3 flavors I enjoy:
• the board is in front of a classroom, and the Math is waaay too advanced for whatever level of pupil these kids are supposed to be; like having the calculus integral in front of kindergartners, or relativistic physics in front of high schoolers.
• the board is in front of Criminals, who are Planning Something, and by all rights there ought to be no Math there to begin with. Like. You’re planning a Heist why do you have the Full Lagrangian on there. Are we taking a rocket to the bank.
• the characters are super-genius science fiction people. The Math is “Pi≈3.24” with an unlabeled pie chart.

The latest edition is dedicated to the proposition that Jews can never fully belong, that they are always visitors to society but never at home.
just want to bold, highlight, and underscore that this is ancient Jew hatred and foundational to Nazism, and now apparently the view widely embraced by mainstream publications like New York Magazine.
Muslims shouldn’t have to be compatible with Western, liberal values to get respect and recognition though. I’d argue it’s especially important for the ones Westerners find most repugnant to have their voice too. There’s nothing inherently less respectable about someone with “Death to America” as a watchword as “God bless America”
No one should have to adhere to certain beliefs or opinions in order to be afforded basic dignity and rights, I'm 100% fully on board with that.
"There's nothing inherently less respectable about someone with 'Death to America' as a watchword as 'God bless America'" -No. Absolutely not. You have completely lost me here. Proudly and publicly calling for the death of an entire country and everyone who lives there is inherently less respectable actually and it fucking should be.
There is such a thing as moral clarity and giving space to genocidal rhetoric and violent extremists who actively want to kill you because "their voices should be heard too" is not it. Good fucking God.
Tolerance is a peace treaty, not an expression of surrender.
Or in other words: tolerance works both ways - I will tolerate you, even if I don't agree with your beliefs, so long as you're willing to tolerate me, even if you don't agree with my beliefs. Calling for the death of an entire nation is not even vaguely an expression of any form of tolerance - and people therefore shouldn't be expected to tolerate it.
one time i was making potato soup and i needed broth for it but i was out of broth. but in my dog food cabinet there was a carton of chicken broth that i had bought for my dog. now the box did say HUMAN GRADE and the ingredients were just bog standard chicken broth. it did say something about joint health for dogs on there. but the ingredients were normal. i even compared the ingredients list to some normal person broth and they were the same. so i did put dog broth in that soup and it did taste completely normal. but i did use the dog broth.
the oh god I can’t do this any more princess has one (1) minor task to complete

What if we were living in a far-future version of Faust where you actually just really really wanted to be my friend but the fundamental nature of your existence (you are a demon) and my preconceived expectations of your species (I am a human) meant that we couldn't help but subconsciously pull each other into an ever deeper state of corruption
