I've talked about reasons I don't like internet censorship a lot in the past, but one reason that's more specific than most is that if someone writes "shot" as "sh*t", no matter how clear the context is, I am not going to process the word as "shot".

devastated to find out that fae romantasy isn’t just the porny version of rath roiben rye
like wtf is the erotic appeal of The Fae™️ if it’s not weird rules and contracts and alien expectations and bizarre magical power exchanges and curses? you take that out and you just have sparkling aristocracy
I’ve been told that they’re very well endowed with such equipment as certain women find desirable, my liege. At least in theory.
yeah well who isn’t these days
*my eunuch-ass nodding sadly and jingling away*
there there my sweet. we’ll show them. we’ll show them all.
cuz everytime we touch i get this feeling
2013-2016 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
and every time we kiss I swear I could fly
Every time I see this I keep thinking 2013-2016 Hyundai Genesis Coupe is the name of the dog
Saying that a certain group of people is too privileged to complain about the way that things are is its own sort of defense of the status quo
Like if a white person from the American suburbs who had doctors for parents says "the suburbs are set up in a way that's designed to alienate the people within them from their neighbors growing up there can be an incredibly lonely isolating experience" and you respond with "shut up you had everything you ever wanted growing up" you are sort of pretending that this asocial way of living we've set up based on harmful ideas like castle doctrine and individualism is in some way desirable for someone when the reality of the situation is that everyone is miserable.
Oh boy this is popping off. But I just want to put on this post that this isn't just about the example that I used this is also when people get mad at you for complaining about aspects of living in America because other people are getting bombed by America how dare you, or when (usually neurodivergent) white people complain about how wasp monoculture is high key hostile to be raised in, or when people with middle class jobs complain about the shit their boss pulls, or any other number of situations in which a relatively privileged potential ally talks about the unique ways the oppressive systems we're looking to overthrow effects them negatively. Like yes sure if you have a minimum wage job it's annoying to listen to someone with a salary and benefits say "my boss treats me like shit and my company is doing x evil thing" but if you're in that situation and you're actually down for the cause instead of just here to play oppression Olympics, you want to gain allies in this fight by saying "have you considered unionizing" instead of pushing people away by saying "shut up at least you can afford rent"
The argument that people are too privileged too complain about their situation used to be exclusively one said by self identified conservatives, but generations of conservative propaganda has made it so people who call themselves leftists will repeat it word for word.
we want to fuck the lizards. what is the confusion here?

they don't tell you this but when an event is advertised as "for all ages" they mean kids. they mean kids. if you, a grown-up, show up expecting to do the arts'n'crafts, you're the weirdo. even though they said "all ages."
great news everynyan, the event that inspired me to make this post in anticipation had an art'n'craft that WAS in fact for all ages, including grown-ups. (in fact it was mosaic-making from recycled glass, with the tools to cut pieces down to size yourself if needed, so it was decidedly for people of a certain age.)
I understand 100% where you're coming from and I have a rant on what the organizers probably meant by "all ages". This is coming from spending too many years running public festivals for anywhere from 100 to 20,000 people at every size of venue from school cafeteria to national convention center, though of course there are exceptions.
The organizers almost certainly really did intend that anyone of any age was welcome to participate in the activities. The problem, I have found, seems to come in 2 parts: the audience's socio-cultural expectations and how they respond to peer pressure (real or imagined), and the likelihood of who shows up at certain kinds of events depending on the regional demographics and how the event is advertised.
My rambling below the cut:
this is incredible thank you
[ID: a screenshot of a comic speech bubble. The black text in it reads "No matter how open-minded, socially conscious, anti-racist I think I am, I still have old learned hidden biases that I need to examine. It is my responsibility to check myself daily for my stereotypes, prejudices and, ultimately, discrimination." /ID end]
antiracism is a constant process. i was raised in a racist village and it's not easy to get rid of it. i moved away over 10 years ago but those ideas are still haunting me.
also keep in mind that shame + guilt are not conducive to growing as a person. when it comes to "checking yourself" it should be a non-judgemental process. it's not about flagellating yourself for every bad thought or trying to purify your mind of all corruption. it's only when acknowledging your own racist thoughts doesn't fill you with dread that you can really progress past the white guilt of it all.
radical self-acceptance & genuine self-critique are not opposites. they need each other. do not let obsessive-compulsive behaviors colonize your desire to grow as a person.
The Lion King 2 is the only sequel media that's allowed to make the former main character a kinda bad parent bcs that's the only time it's been done right. This sounds insane but LoK wishes it had what The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride did.
Anyway the REASON it gets a pass is because it actually grounds Simba's bad parenting in things that it would make sense for him to be worried about or reactive too based on the trauma he's gone through, and on top of that he still gets to have a character arc despite not being the main character that follows from the character arc he had in the first movie.
I don't believe Aang was a bad father in the way the show said he was because it's contrary to his entire personality. Someone who helped form the Air Acolytes would never neglect his son because he's not a bender or his daughter because she's not an air bender. Just like I don't believe Luke "There Is Still Good In Vader" Skywalker would try to kill his nephew, it's contrary to his entire personality, Luke would not see his nephew any differently than he saw Anakin, especially when he hadn't yet done anything wrong while Vader had genocided half the galaxy and murdered a bunch of children.
I believe that Simba struggled to raise his daughter because he was overprotective BECAUSE he knows how fucking easy it is for someone to die in the savanna. It happened right in front of him. He also didn't get raised to adulthood with his parents so ofc he's not the best as knowing how to talk to his daughter or explain things to her, he got raised in the wilderness by two gay weirdos. Of course he's insanely hostile to outsiders including the lionesses that decided to follow Scar, Scar killed his dad and nearly caused a collapse of the local ecosystem. And during the course of the movie he has to actually come to terms with how he's letting his trauma control him and it's drive his daughter away. He gets to apologize and admit he was wrong, he gets to grow.
And yeah you could argue we don't really get to see Aang or Luke interacting with their families because that's not when the story is set but there are still ways to make sure your characterization is consistent, and I'd argue in cases like Aang and Luke where you don't get to see them when they were raising/interacting with their young families it's even more important for you to keep the characterization consistent because we don't get to see the character grow and change we just see where they started and where they ended up, so if you change too much it's gonna feel weird.
You can do the "they grew up to be bad and/or flawed parents/guardians" thing without it feeling like character assassination and for some reason The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride does it better than most media that tries it.
"when people ask how you're doing, they don't really care." most of them do, actually, the amount they care is just directly proportional to how well they know you. you're just mad you can't be the main character of the Twice Daily.
if i am doing shitty and the check out girl asks me, "how are you?" i will say,"man, i've been better." we are strangers to each other. she doesn't need to know my whole life story. she doesn't need to know about my credit score and my hemorrhoids or my uncle in the hospital. she just needs enough to respond "been there, buddy. hey, at least the day is almost over?" and then we part ways. i have been on both sides of thousands of exchanges like this, the only one making you do a little song and dance is you, my friend

idk I can tell that some tumblrinas are not up on fat politics because I see a lot of people saying stuff like “it’s better to be a little fat than waste your life trying to be thin” or like “it’s chic to have a little belly” like okay but there are fat people who are “a lot fat” and have “a lot of belly” which everyone is weirdly silent on all the time. Like the fattest person on earth still deserves to exist in human society with joy and dignity regardless of how they got to that weight or how many health conditions they have as a result of their personal actions…that should be everyone’s baseline here I’m not really sure what’s complicated about it

So wait are livestock guardian dogs to their flocks like… Clark Kent among the residents of Smallville? He’s been here since he was a baby, we all know him, and he’s… generally one-of-us shaped, uh, approximately. And then when something goes wrong he suddenly leaps into action and does some terrifying impossible shit none of us could do. And then comes back home and settles in like nothing happened and he’s one of us again.
Hmm.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
Actual answer: the sheep know the dogs are not sheep, and they also know the dog is protecting them and take their cues from the dog about whether they need to run for the barn or can just ignore anything scary that approaches.
However, a friend once had an extremely premature orphan lamb born in December who had to live in the house for a couple of months with leg braces and all that, who due to spending her lambhood with dogs instead of sheep came out of the whole experience convinced she was a livestock guardian dog! She would patrol the perimeter of the fields every evening with the actual dog, stand watch in the barn door at night like the dog, and was more than willing to throw down if she saw something scary coming towards the flock the way the guard dog did. Tragically orphaned lamb did a convincing job at being a guard dog without actually having any of the biological advantages a dog has over a sheep.
Which I suppose made her Sheep Batman.
