chance couldn’t help but laugh at how adorable his girlfriend was, and eventually, he gave in. wrapping his arms around her, he pressed a kiss to her forehead. “fine, fine --- the fox shall grant the fox-napper snuggles ... you know, even though the fox has summer work to finish.” he made a face.

chance crinkled his nose, not agreeing with the girl, but not wanting to disagree with her again. “yeah, consistency is key, i guess,” he said, accompanied by a lazy shrug. “uh 000 did i catch your name? i’m chance.”

luna had always been the type of person to give her own life away for the sake of someone else’s. she still was, even if she was more careful with it. it was a last resort now, a very slim possibility, but it was still there, and it scared her. as soon as chance said he wasn’t going anywhere, she hiccuped and her tears spilled over. her hands clutched his and she buried her head in his shoulder. “thank you, i-i’m so sorry –” she cut herself off by sniffing. “i don’t want to go anywhere.”
he wrapped his arm around her, opting to let go of her hand in order to hold her closer. he ran his hand through her hair, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. “don’t be sorry, it’s not --- you have nothing to be sorry for,” he assured, tone gentle. “i believe that you won’t go anywhere. but let’s not worry about that, okay? you’re fine right now, and that’s what’s important.” he smiled.

luna just raised her eyebrows at him, as if challenging him to prove her wrong, but it was a short-lived gesture. with nothing to keep herself occupied, she leaned back and looked down at her own hands. she was already regretting saying anything, but he deserved to know. her eyes began to sting as she tried to hold back tears. “i… i don’t know,” she said, her voice hoarse. “if i end up having to consume a bunch of nightmare energy to protect people and i have no way to let it go, i don’t know what’ll happen… hopefully the worst that’ll happen is that i’ll get sick.” she took a deep breath. “i know it’s a lot to handle, so if you don’t want to deal with any of it, just say so and i can leave you alone –”
at her answer to his question, he had to look away from her. he had to look away before he started crying, himself. she didn’t know. he took a deep breath, listening to her speak. he didn’t know what to say. was he supposed to say anything? as soon as she finished speaking, though, he spluttered out a quick, “luna, that is the last thing i want,” he said, finally looking at her. “it’s ... it’s you and me, okay? we’ll work it out. we’ll see it through.” he reached out, placing his hand over hers. “it’s me and you, la luna. i’m not going anywhere, and i’d really like if you didn’t go anywhere, either.”

“i should stop, your ego doesn’t need a boost.” she made sure to add hearts at the end of her message, right before she signed her name and handed the marker back. “if i couldn’t even remember your name, then we’d have a problem.” she waited for him to speak before continuing, as if it would somehow stall or stop time, so she wouldn’t have to say it out loud. it had been so long since she’d had to. “i… if i absorb too much nightmare energy, i get really sick. and it’s harder for me to sleep. and if i absorb even more than that, i… i could die.”
“pfft. what ego?” he joked, letting out a laugh. he took the maker back once she was finished, setting it on the table beside his bed. “well, yeah, but i’d still forgive you for it.” once she continued to speak, of her powers, of the effects that they had on her, he could only watch her, silent. he didn’t know what to say, especially once she had finished. what was he supposed to say? “you ... you could ...” he began, frowning deeply. he looked away from her, opting to look down at his hands instead. “... but --- but you won’t ... right?”

“oh, stop,” he said, waving his free hand and letting out a small laugh. “still the best one in the world, obviously. i’d forgive you even if you couldn’t remember my name.” he half-joked. as she began to talk of her powers, he turned serious, listening intently to everything she had to say. he nodded when appropriate, just to show that he was listening. when she finished, he remained silent for a moment, letting a heavy silence hang over them. once he finally spoke, it came out as a quiet, “... complications?”

chance stepped a bit further into the room, a bit closer to his friend. “i’m ... alright,” he said, a bit hesitantly. “how about you? you doing okay?”
