Jalandara is a powerful asura, son of Lord Shiva. ‘Jalandhara Bandha’ in yoga is derived from his name.
Jalandhara (In Sanskrit, means he who holds water), also known as Chalantarana (In Sanskrit, means he who walks and swims) was an evil demigod who is the offspring of a god and a human.
He was born when Lord Shiva opened his third eye to destroy Indra for his arrogance.
However, Indra was saved and the energy emitted from the eye was sent into the ocean. The energy later developed into a baby boy and Varuna, the water god, felt tremendous power in this child and adopted him. And later, he was raised by Shukracharya (Guru of Asuras).
Jalandhara’s childhood was full of wonders. Borne up by the wind, he flew over the ocean; his pets were lions which he had caught; and the largest birds and fishes were subject to him.
Jalandhara grew up to be a handsome man and was made the emperor of Asuras by Shukra, their guru. Jalandhara was exceedingly powerful and is considered to be one of the mightiest asuras of all time.
When he grew up, he defeated devas when a fierce battle took place between the Devas and Asuras, and conquered the three realms - Swarga (heaven), Bhuloka (earth) and Patala (hell). He married Vrinda, a pious lady.
Later, Shiva was forced to kill him in response to the demands of the disgruntled gods, who were controlled and enslaved by Jalandhara.
ジャランダーラは、シバ神から生まれた豪勇無双のアスラである。ヨガにおけるシャランダーラ・バンダは彼の名前に由来する。
ジャランダーラ（「水を保持する者」の意）は、チャランタラナ(「歩いたり泳いだりする者」の意）としても知られている邪悪な半神であった。シヴァ神が第三の目を開いてインドラの傲慢さを滅ぼすために生まれた。
しかし、インドラは救われ、シヴァ神の目から発せられたエネルギーは海に送られた。そのエネルギーは男の子と化し、ヴァルナが引き取り、後にシュクラチャリヤ（アスラのグル）に育てられた。
ジャランダーラの幼少期は不思議に満ちていた。風に吹かれて生まれた彼は海の上を飛び、彼のペットは彼が捕まえたライオンであり、最大の鳥や魚は彼に服従していた。
ジャランダーラは美形で逞しい男に成長し、彼らのグルであるシュクラによってアスラの皇帝にされた。ジャランダーラは最強であり、どの時代にも圧倒的強さを誇るアスラの一人であると考えられている。
彼が成長すると、デヴァとアスラの間で激しい戦いが行われた際にデヴァを倒し、スワルガ（天国）、ブーロカ（土）、パターラ（地獄）の3つの領域を征服した。彼は信心深い女性であるヴリンダと結婚した。
その後、シヴァはジャランダーラに支配され奴隷にされて不満を持つ神々の要求に応じて、やむをえず彼を殺害した。
