I’m an artist. Artists don’t need permission to work. Regardless of whether I’m acting or not, I write. I write when I’m tired in fact, because I believe your most pure thoughts surface.

The projects that I end up doing, that I want to be involved with in any way, have always been projects that will be impactful, for the most part, to my people — to black people. To see black people in ways which you have not seen them before. So Black Panther was on my radar, and in my dreams.

If you don’t know James Shaw Jr. He fought off a gunman in Antioch Tennessee at a Waffle House. He saved lives.

studios will very often tell you that movies with a black lead are not going to work overseas. that was the thing for me. this means something everywhere in the world. it could actually change how studios respond to black movies. you can no longer say definitively, black movies don’t work outside of the u. s.
