“it’s..basically you and your class go and visit places to do with your course.” he shrugged, crossing his arms. “so, if it’s a science trip you’ll go to some kinda tech place, maybe oscorp? do you have a parent or guardian that can sign it?”

“Oh.” That didn’t sound too bad. Maybe. Surely it couldn’t be. “I have Logan? I stay with him here. Is that a guardian?” She does know what parents are. Talking to Andromeda all that time ago had taught her that. She also knows she doesn’t have any.

lysander wasn’t sure why she had such an adverse reaction to the word ‘assignment’ – admittedly, they didn’t love doing work either, but still. it was never so stern and serious. worried they’d upset her somehow, they shifted awkwardly, pointing to the paper as they spoke. “i… it’s just an essay. short word count. is… is that okay?”

Rowan’s expression changes from hardened resignation to confusion again. “An... essay?” Short word count... They wanted her to write something. “So, they don’t want me to kill someone?” She’d had to learn a lot of new things here, but the fact that an assignment was a very different thing was unexpected.

Mars glanced down at the paper being held, taking a closer look. It seemed unusual to be asked what a paper would say, but he didn’t give it much of a second thought, as his mind was busy running within other arenas of battles. “They’re seeking your presence for science class.”

Rowan looked confused, but remembered she had been told she’d be required to do classes here. Catch her up, give her a ‘normal’ life. “When? And... what kind of science class?” In her opinion though, anything where she wasn’t the experiment would be fine.

Thalia frowned. If this was some kind of joke, it wasn’t funny. But then she saw how the girl looked at the paper, as if it was an alien language, and she knew it wasn’t a joke. For the first time in a while, she felt a little bit of sympathy. Of course, no one could ever know that. “Let me see…” Thalia looked at the schedule, more seriously this time. “English might. And I’d talk to the teacher, see if you can get extra help.” She paused, looking up at the girl. “It’s okay if you can’t read. I… it’s is hard for a lot of people.

It wasn’t a joke. And though Rowan doesn’t know that’s what the girl is thinking, she can see a change in the other’s expression when they offer to take another look at the schedule. She hands it over again, curious. “Okay,” she says, noting the advice. But the next thing makes her blink in surprise. “It is?”

the black haired girl pushed her sunglasses upwards again before pushing her hair behind her ear, showing off the earbuds that were connected to an old tape recorder the teacher has used to pre-record the lesson for her. “ i listen to it… can you not read? “ 

“Why should I care what it says?” Aspen didn’t even look at the paper, kept her focus on the book in her hands instead. She made no attempt to hide her annoyance.”Whatever that paper says, I guarantee it won’t have any effect on me.” That mattered more to her than most anything else could. “So, why should I care?”

Rowan pulls the paper back. Annoyance was an emotion she could recognise, at least in other people. She tried to avoid making it worse; if she didn’t it’d typically end up in pain. “Sorry.” Her eyes instinctively drop to the ground. She should’ve just waited until she got back to Logan’s. “I was told to... just ask.” But she didn’t understand who she could and couldn’t ask. 

While she was stuck here, Thalia could barely care about her classes. She didn’t understand most of them anyway, so what was the point? As for other people’s classes, she cared even less. “Oh,” she said, scanning the paper. “It says you’re super screwed. Why are you taking all these classes? Half of them are boring as shit.”

Rowan's brow furrows. "Screwed?" What did that mean? She shakes her head. "I'm taking what they told me to take. This is all new." She looks at the paper as if she expects it to suddenly make sense. “Will these classes teach me to read this?”

lysander hadn’t been expecting the girl to approach him, but she seemed nice enough. he wasn’t particularly approachable in the sense that he just looked so nervous and sad all the time, but he was happy to help wherever somebody needed him to. taking the paper and reading over it slowly, the redhead nodded, understanding.

“it’s a… an explanation of an a-assignment. so… so… like, a, uh, the rubric and everything.” he paused, before adding quietly, “do you… need s-some help with it?”

peter carefully takes the slip of paper and examines it. “uh – “ he mumbled as he read, turning back to the girl once he had finished. “you got a field trip coming up, i think. do you got someone to sign the consent form? i didn’t even know we did this kinda thing.”

Rowan tilted her head in confusion. "Field trip?" Perhaps this was a question better left to Logan but she was confused. Twenty years with weapon X meant she had no idea about this. "What's that?” Consent, though, she knew what that was. Kind of. Mostly in theory.

lei had to be accommodated because even though she could hit a target on the bullseye without her sight, she still needed to learn and so teachers had to either send a digital version for her to listen to or get it done in braille. this teacher took the easy route, preemptively sending her the link to the lesson so she could listen along. as the girl asked her a question, lei immediately laughed as she moved her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose to show her grey eyes. “ i’m blind, i have no clue what you’re showing me. “ 

Rowan frowns, blinking in confusion when the other laughs at her. Until she saw her grey eyes. Oh. “I don’t know what it is either. ...How do you know what’s happening if you’re blind? When they give us these things?” she asks. 

“Excuse me,” she asks the closest person. “What does this say?”

two little girls trained for murder. it was funny how broken continued to meet broken - in an all together unfunny sort of way, of course. rowan was lucky. she had gotten out. and as much jealousy as victoria might feel… “it isn’t a problem.” she moved through the kitchen with an ease she had little of, anywhere else, grabbing a cup and the jug of juice, and handng the former off to her. “hold it steady?”

“you mean the folks around here? sure, they try. but do they do it ‘cause they care or ‘cause they have to?” he huffed, crossing his arms as he looked at her.
