The Quick and Easy Valentine's Day
With Saving All My Love Playing in the Background
It had always been complicated but today would be simple.
He handed me a tub of seafood marinara he made that morning as he crossed the threshold to my apartment. He even deshelled the shrimps so I could enjoy eating. He has always known how I enjoy eating. Quick. Easy. Efficient.
After eating and leaving the plates in the sink (to be ignored for the rest of the day and a few days after), we decided against going out, as he was sure the malls would be packed to the brim with lovers professing their undying love for each other by going to restaurants, buying stuff that is not normally pink but was today, holding hands to show the world how much they enjoyed each other’s company and would not let go.
He has always known how I like professing my love. Quick. Easy. Efficient.
And so we laid on the bed and we talked for hours. We stayed away from the profound and instead talked about the mundane workings of our everyday. He talked to me about his plans of moving to the UK where he had a friend who wouldn’t mind hosting us while he looked for a job. I spoke about how frenetic work had been lately. He told me about a movie he’s seen that he’s sure I would enjoy and maybe we could watch it that weekend. I mused about the what-ifs of hitting the beach with some friends, instead.
By midnight it had started to rain. He kissed me by the door as we said our goodbyes and see-you-soons. I reminded him of our weekend date of either movie or beach. He acquiesced and said "I love you" as he took to the stairs on the way to his wife and children.
I went back to bed and thought about things. Quick. Easy. Efficient.
