I think they’re both really smart characters, and in the world they live in it is not smart for them to be together. The AU takes place around the 90s/early 2000s just so we could write it a little better. Aizawa has a quirk that a lot of people want for themselves, so he is under a protection program that makes his legal name and face hidden from all media for his safety. I decided to do this because in canon, aizawa was meant to die instead of shirakumo because of his attractive quirk.

Mic is media, he is radio and video and the literal face (next to all might) of all heroes. It isn’t safe for him to go out and have dinner with Aizawa because paparazzi could follow and it would get them in a lot of trouble not only for being a gay couple, but also Aizawa isnt exactly the type of guy the industry wants to see mic with.

Midnight plays into this because in canon, she pesters him a lot to be on his show and he’s hesitant about it because she’s an 18+ hero. I used this and turned it into them both getting brownie points from pretending to be together for the TV. This gets Mic out of explaining being single and it gets Midnight out of some of the harassment boys give her.

Aizawa and Mic to me got really close after shirakumo died from trauma, built a relationship close to one of partners… then mic gets popular and they both agree very young that it could never work, but they will stay close friends forever. Mic grows up and the media popular part of him is happy he made the choice and loves the attention… but the other half of him is regressed back at the age when he gave up what he could have had with Aizawa and he feels he couldn’t love anyone the way he loves him. Mic would rather lash out than admit he still has feelings for him, and he isn’t sure theyre reciprocated anymore.
