Missing Sand Mountain Fire Lookout today. And looking forward to spending more time on the mountaintop with my dad this summer! . This is an Osbourne Fire Finder, used to find azimuths and vertical angle when spotting fires. Last summer, my dad had me practice with it on all the major points of interest around the lookout. The azimuth is then converted to a legal bearing (based on forestry maps), which is called in to the McKenzie River Ranger District and Eugene Dispatch when reporting a fire. We also report weather readings and visibility throughout the day. . As part of the Sand Mountain Society (sandmountain.org), my brother completed a historic restoration of Sand Mountain’s lookout in 1989, by relocating and renovating a 1930s structure originally located on Whisky Peak.
