[Graphic Appreciation ]

Through our Visual Communications class, we learned alot of new photoshop skills, Looking at some of these posters you can see alot of clever uses of clipping masks. 

Love the second one ‘’The wolf of snow hollow’’. The shape of the wolf, and the overhead shot of the man walking I found very effective

The last three look so skillfully made and thought out. Great use of perspective in the last one @Black Water: Abyss. SO simple and effective

Love. Love. Love. I'm going with a slasher movie myself, but its good to poke around with other genres and styles. I really like old style move posters. I would love to take elements and combine with a contemporary approach.

Love poster’s abstract art style with its “impossible angles and looming, impractical structures is an odd fit for a film, which is, inherently, a mimetic medium (which means it looks like the thing it represents). In fact, this is pretty much what The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari looks like. The sets were built deliberately askew, the actors’ faces heavily made up; the art department even painted unnatural shadows on the ground.”

An idea came to my mind immeidatly after recieving the brief. These slasher movies are by director Zac Anico, and I just love there old school vibe

For this assignment you are to research, plan and then design a film poster.

Below are some images he showed us have how to design and conceptualise your Movie Poster.

I Particularly love the second image. Its the creation of the ‘metaphor’ poster. Its supposed to incapsulate the over all feeling of the movie, and be a representation of the final posters.

Agh. Oh how bad when your projector breaks and you have to run around and rethink of everything.. So in a very stressed manner, I submitted photography assignment 3.

I decided early on in this project that I wanted my four images to relate. The pandemic society is a theme I tried to create through using visual rhetoric.

Figure 1 : Safe

For the word safe I decided to use the photo of a front-line worker. Safe where I am, I used distance to show how far apart we are, even though it is suggested that we are all be in this together. Through a curtain, in the background, they risk their lives to keep us safe. For this photo, I used a projected image upon a green backdrop. Green, the colour of life, renewal, nature and energy, is associated with meanings if growth, harmony and safety. I decided to use my projector to create some of my images, as I thought it would be an interesting way to make my world that is quite limited now, bigger and hopefully create some visual poetry. I used the lighting for the projector and then just a small adjustment to brightness and contrast in photoshop. I find the most interesting photos come when you use your own light source.

I tried to create an uncanny feeling in this photo. I attempted to encompass the idea of the domestic. During these trying times, the household has become an unfamiliar place, more like a jail then a sanctuary. On these four walls everyday objects find new occupancy, some things like sock drawers get tended too, others learn how to fly. I left this one up to interpretation, the line of knives but with a missing occupant. I allowed natural light to create the everyday feeling, then used black and white, with strong contrast echoing the mundane and normal conflicts that occur.

Black and white are to reflect the situation or debate, which can involve clearly defined opposing principles or issues. The lack of colour removes and distraction and helps the viewer focus on the visual rhetoric of the photo. This accompanied by design aspects such as even composition and the rule of thirds.

For this word, the first thing that came to me was my overall distain of the current climate. The profound impact on mental health and growing sense of hopelessness is aligned with the ongoing streams of misinformation or mixed information. The constant digesting of news causes us to be enraged, left with a bad taste for life. Whether the news is unsavory or sweet, we bite off more then we can mentally chew.

I made similar design decisions as for Danger. I set the photo in the domestic and used black and white with strong grey symbolism. The mash up of the defined opposing opinions that leave an overall grey ambiance on the viewer’s outlook.

Figure 4 : Joy

For this word I looked to the Irish pandemic society, and where the majority found hope of some sort of normality being restored. The pub reopening. As teasing as the government has been, the sheer mention of an open bar, and people are filled with joy. I found this sign to have a visually jovial feel to it and to the viewer. For editing I just adjusted the brightness and contrast., making sure the sign was illuminated.

The visual rhetoric for this photo works with the current society climate, the idea of a pub being open is a truly positive feeling or sign that things are starting to get better.

The pandemic really forces you to think outside of the box creatively. Isolated in the country I had to look at what I have at my disposal to attempt to create photos with strong visual rhetoric. I decided it may be interesting to use my projector to build a bigger scene on a small canvas. Some projector photography inspiration I found by Side by Side

For our assignment we were asked to take four photos with these words promts:

Safe,  Danger,  Anger, Joy 

“The images should attempt to portray a visual message that you have developed from the words. You should consider how you deliver this message by considering what type of image you use (informative? explicative?) by use of visual rhetoric. You should also consider the composition, contrast and construction of the image. You do not have to literally interpret the word; it can be the basis for an abstract concept”

From the first day of receiving the brief, my mind immediately thought of hands, and the language of hands. I plan to create four scenes with four different hand gestures. Im going to work in a black and white format, and build a story line in the background, where the viewer can make its own meaning. All photos will have no typography, but I hope to experiment here with putting words on a photo, and seeing if it changes the meaning. 

While researching, I came across this artist, who mirrored my visual desires.
