Drawn From The Heart: Your Most Memorable Valentine's Day Cards
No snark or anti-commercialism rantings here, just a dose of simple sweetness. We asked readers to share their most memorable Valentineâs Day cards; here are a few of our favorites, edited for length and clarity. And we asked NPR illustrator Chelsea Beck to re-create two valentines that live on only in their recipientsâ memories.
Renae Quinn, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
My favorite valentine ever was from my late husband on the Valentineâs Day before we married. He gave me a box and lined up in the box were a drawing of an eye, a paper heart on a spring that popped up when I opened the box, a pink foam letter U, a chocolate-covered strawberry, and a baggie full of dirt from the garden in front of our apartment.
I was mystified. I mean I got the âI love you so veryâ part clearly enough, but the dirt? I said, âYou love me so very dirty?â I didnât care for that! He kept saying, âNo, think about it.â
But all I could come up with was, âI love you so very dirt.â
He finally told me, âMULCH! Itâs mulch!â
So it said, âI love you so very much.â Duh.
Itâs still my favorite ever.
Christine Hull, Springvale, Maine
Three years ago, when my son was 7, he made a collection of small valentines that he distributed throughout our house. Each valentine was unique, and each involved a heart shape.
One was a simple red heart taped to the inside of a spoon. I found it while I was making my morning coffee and, of course, it brightened my day. Another was a pink bunny, who was especially cute because he was lopsided. Yet another was a series of yellow hearts arranged like petals of a sunflower. It was carefully taped to appear as if it were growing out from under my desk.
I was impressed by his creativity, but more so by the fact that he woke up early to hide each valentine for my husband and me to discover as we went through our day. He didnât simply give us one valentine, he gave us a day full of discovering valentines.

I was teaching second-graders how to speak English. I was teaching them similes to describe things. âYou are as quiet as a mouse,â âYou are tall as the ceiling,â etc.
When Valentineâs Day came, wild and crazy J.R. gave me a heart cut out of plain white paper. On the heart, he wrote: âYou are as beautiful as Wonder Woman. You are as fun as clowns. You are as smart as God. Love JR.â
I kept that valentine on my fridge until the sun bleached it out completely, some 14 years later. Thereafter, my sweet husband would remind me at bedtime that I was as beautiful as Wonder Woman. As fun as clowns. As smart as God. Just in case I forgot.

The transcendental experience of watching Roger Federer play tennis, David Foster Wallace wrote, was one of âkinetic beauty.â Federerâs balletic precision and mastering of time, on the very edge of what seems possible for a body to achieve, was a form of bodily genius. What Foster Wallace saw in a Federer Moment, I see in a video of neo-Nazi Richard Spencer getting punched in the face.
You may have seen it, itâs a meme now, set to backing tracks of Bruce Springsteen, New Order, even a song from Hamilton. The punch, landed by a masked protester on Inauguration Day, lends itself perfectly to a beat. Spencer, who states that America belongs to white men, was in the midst of telling an Australian TV crew in D.C. that he was not a neo-Nazi, while pointing to his neo-Nazi Pepe the Frog lapel pin. A black-clad figure then jumps into frame, deus ex machina, with a perfectly placed right hook to Spencerâs face. The Alt-Right poster boy stumbles away, and his anonymous attacker bounds out of sight in an instant. I donât know who threw the punch, but I know by his unofficial uniform that this was a member of our black bloc that day. And anyone enjoying the Nazi-bashing clip (and many are) should know that theyâre watching anti-fascist bloc tactics par excellenceâpure kinetic beauty. If you want to thank Spencerâs puncher, thank the black bloc. [âŚ]
âThe black bloc I joined met at Logan Circle, some two miles north of the inauguration parade route. We peered through bandanas to find friends. We gathered in bloc formation behind wood-enforced banners, we filled the street and began to march. The bloc takes care to stay together, move together and blend together. Within minutes, bottle rockets were shooting skyward and bricks were flying through bank windows. You donât know who does what in a bloc, you donât look to find out. If bodies run out of formation to take a rock to a Starbucks window, they melt back to the bloc in as many seconds. Bodies reconciled, kinetic beauty. If that sounds to you like a precondition for mob violence, youâre right. But this is only a problem if you think there are no righteous mobs, or that windows feel pain, or that counter-violence (like punching Richard Spencer) is never valid.â
âTo talk with any romance for the black bloc risks falling into the worst tropes of bombastic revolutionary writing. We donât don black masks and become instant revolutionary subjects. We donât necessarily achieve more with property damage than a larger, more subdued rally achieves. In every case, the standard of achievement depends on the aims of the action, and all of us are far from creating the rupture we want to see in the world. One broken window, or a hundred, is not victory. But nor is over half a million people rallying on the National Mall. Both gain potency only if they are perceived as a threat by those in and around power. And neither action will appear threatening unless followed up again and again with unrelenting force, in a multitude of directions. You donât have to choose between pink hat and black mask; each of us can wear both. You donât have to fight neo-Nazis in the street, but you should support those who do.â
DJ Khaled Throws Us The Keys
NPR's David Greene: Can I tell you my favorite of your keys?
DJ Khaled: Please, tell me.
DG: "Have a lot of pillows." I love that. Our staff on Morning Edition is obsessed with sleep, because none of us get enough of it: We have to wake up at ungodly hours of the morning. We need pillows. Do you mean that literally?
DJ Khaled: I mean that so literally. I'm talking about, you have to rest your greatness, you know? I have a lot pillows in my bed, my tour bus â every time I turn, there's a pillow. You know, if I turn to the left, the right. If I turn my whole body. If my leg moves. It's just pillows everywhere.

Two celebrities had an email exchange about race that seemed polite but was loaded with subtext. When the exchange became public, the conversation about who was wrong looked frustratingly familiar.
It was a bizarre Hollywood kerfuffle.
Over the weekend, the publicist for actress Tilda Swinton released an email exchange between Swinton and comedian Margaret Cho about race and casting in Hollywood. Swinton was one of the stars of Dr. Strange and played a character, The Ancient One, who had always been Asian in the comic books on which the movie was based. Swinton had reached out to Cho, an outspoken critic of âwhitewashingâ in the film industry.
After the email exchange, Cho went on a podcast and characterized the brief conversation as a âfightâ in which she said Swinton essentially asked her to make the criticism go away.
