Redecorate by Twenty One Pilots is, I think, kind of an overall theme song for Hearts of Giants. (At least in the current continuity we're thinking of it in.) Instead of the implied fear being about death, however, it's being seen as a monster (literal or metaphorical). The last time, with the chorus being sung twice, is Hearts begging [the evil scientist guy i swear we'll figure out details eventually] to stand down. They really, really don't want to kill. But they know some of them will--and that's what ends up happening.
And so that last repetition is, first, Hearts begging ("I don't want to go like this / At least let me clean my room"), then shooting ("I don't want to leave like this"), the shot landing, ("'Cause the last thing I want to do is"), realizing what they've done ("Make my people make decisions"), and coping with the immediate aftermath ("Wondering what to do, oh / Should they keep it on display / Or redecorate?"). The plots of evil aliens can't be foiled by just killing one dude.

This has so much going on in it. There's two major-major plotlines, and then a bunch of smaller ones.
The thematic gist of this (and Shattered Skies as a whole) is hope. It's trying anyways even when everything seems pointless. It's continuing onward even what it's really hard. Stars are heavily tied with hope in Shattered Skies, and so this is a story about finding hope in otherwise dark and dreadful situations.
From a meta perspective: This is dubiously a paracosm. We do daydream about it sometimes (we have a playlist it's kinda inevitable lol), but it's not currently in the 'default daydreams' folder, if that makes sense. It's mostly here because we want to talk about it without providing any context.
Due to pronoun and gender worldbuilding being incomplete and complicated, please assume all characters use all pronouns unless explicitly stated otherwise. Also, all story names very, very WIP.

Post-getting-zombie'd-and-subsequently-cured, Rain only remembers the traumatic things that happened to her before that whole shebang (because of complicated worldbuilding stuff).
So she doesn't remember Dusk or [other survivor we still have to name], even though she meets both of them again later. For [other survivor], this is pretty devastating, because, y'know, only other person who survived a village getting overrun by undead and wiped out and they don't even remember it.
For Dusk, though, it's a bit more complicated. We're still debating whether he loses memories due to as-yet-unexplained-Star-stuff, but assuming he keeps his memories... well, the only things Rain remembers of him are traumatic incidents she never processed before she died. So she has memories of him, and the emotions tied with them and all, but no other context. Dusk also gets caught up in complicated politics stuff, so he's not exactly in a position to deal with people he may or may not remember.
So... yeah. Rain remembers someone who used to mean so much to her solely though awful memories, and that someone might not remember her at all. And she doesn't remember someone who does remember her--someone who maybe never really knew her, but still cares.

everyone pour one out for gamma. he puts so much effort into healing from childhood trauma and working to experience emotions again and then he gets thrown into a really shitty situation and falls back on disassociating hard from emotions as a coping mechanism. he tries so hard and then gets fucked over anyways and he doesn't deserve that
deedee is such a fun character. So Done and Tired but in a way that means doing stupid stuff like writing the worst fanfiction of their boss is entirely within plausibility
tbh most of their character is, i think, like that. they've had a lot of responsibility from a young age, so when they get a chance to go stupid and/or crazy, they do. they're responsible, they're just unafraid of going to extremes to fulfill that responsbility
having fantaparas sure is an experience. like yep, this is my special little guy who runs around in my head, and yes he used to be this other guy, but he's grown apart since then. unfortunately you can still tell where we got him so we're not letting him free range just yet
