“I think that’s enough data for one day,” Tyler said as he began to pack up his equipment. “Got a good start to the season.”
Kate stood beside him, watching as the others gathered their gear, and did a mental headcount. “Uh…Tyler?” she asked, and he hummed, not looking up at her. “I think we’re missing one.”
He suddenly looked up, counting himself, then he shut his eyes and let out a heavy sigh. “She’s like a kid finding a toy store. Boone!”
Boone stuck his head out the other side of the truck. “I didn’t do it.”
“She wandered again.”
Boone looked around. “Nu uh! She’s been beside me the enti…oh…”
Kate looked between them. “I’m so confused.”
“Tyler’s girlfriend likes to wander when you take your eyes off her,” Boone answered. “Kinda like a dog when you take it off the leash.”
“Don’t call her a dog,” Tyler chastised as he walked past. “Did anyone see her?”
Ben looked over at an expanse of trees. “I do believe she walked off towards the forest over there.”
Tyler rubbed a hand over his face. “I’ll be back in a few minutes. Everyone keep packing.”
As he walked off, Kate leaned by the window and asked Boone, “So, she wanders around a lot? She get bored fast?”
“Oh yeah,” Boone snorted. “She’s a lot like a crow. When she sees something shiny, she’s going to take off after it.” He popped a piece of beef jerky into his mouth and chewed. “Notorious for finding shit though. Never seen her come back empty handed.”
“Huh…didn’t know that.”
Tyler trudged through low hanging branches and bushes knee high until he found boot prints following the path of a stream. He walked along, enjoying the peace and quiet, then he caught sight of her bent over a part of the stream, digging around in the mud. He tipped his head, watching her for a moment, then cleared his throat, watching with a smile as her shoulders jumped.
“Find anything cool?” he asked, and she lifted up something above her head.
“Arrowheads.” She dug around a few more times. “Some rose rocks.”
He walked over and crouched beside her. “Didn’t stay to gather data?”
“Got bored,” she answered and cleaned one of the arrowheads off in the water before she turned slightly, and wiped it on his jeans, then she put it in his hand.
Tyler flipped it over. About the size of his thumb, white in color, serrated edges. “Good find.”
“Found a few of them. Put ‘em in my backpack.”
He looked at her from the corner of his eye. “You mad at me?”
“Nope.”
“You are.”
Tyler nudged her. “Why you mad at me? What’d I do?”
She hummed low in her throat. “Remember how you promised me last year we’d go to the Ritz for our anniversary?”
“Yeah?” he said, brows furrowing, still not understanding.
“Tyler?”
“What?”
“Wanna take a stab at what day today is?” she offered and immediately his eyes went wide.
"It sure as hell isn't our anniversary." He fumbled for his phone. “Our anniversary isn’t until—” he thumbed into the calendar and then pursed his lips. “Ah…shit,” he muttered. “Baby, I swear I didn’t—”
“It’s fine,” she interrupted and stood up from the dirt.
He quickly stood up too, dropping the arrowhead into his shirt pocket. “I’ll make it up to you.”
“Yep,” she nodded, and he frowned.
“I will. I’ll make dinner a-and I’ll get us some good wine, and we’ll listen to some George Strait and dance, and I’ll run you a bath, and give you a completely non-sexual massage, and then—” he trailed off when he saw the annoyed but fond look on her face. “Baby,” he murmured. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, Tyler,” she nodded.
“No, it’s not,” he sighed. “I made a promise last year and…I couldn’t keep it.”
She shrugged. “We’re doing decent work up here. Takes precedent.”
Tyler wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her up against him. “No, it doesn’t.” he nuzzled her neck. “I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
With a sigh, she patted his back. “C’mon, big boy, the others are probably waiting.”
He let out a noise in his throat, refusing to let her go. “Stop being mad at me.”
“I’m not mad,” she snorted.
“You’re mad,” he groaned. “I can’t stand it when you’re mad at me.”
“Tyler, I’m not mad,” she laughed, poking at his back. “C’mon, let go so we can go back.”
“Tell me you love me.”
“Or what? We’ll spend forever locked here in this little forest?”
“Yes.”
She sighed wistfully. “Well, I don’t think I’d mind all that much.” She pulled back enough to see his face. “I love you.”
“Mmm…mean it.”
Rolling her eyes, she reached up and took his face in her hands, squeezing his cheeks together as she promised, “I love you, Tyler Owens. Even if you forget our anniversary to chase tornadoes.”
He hummed and leaned forward, pressing his lips to hers. “I love you, pretty girl.” He took her hand and started leading her back to the others.
“Y’know…there is one way you can make it up to me.”
“Do tell, pretty girl.”
“Could always go for a good strip tease.”
Tyler snorted, looking back at her. “That’s all I’m good for to you, ain’t it? Strip teases and thrills.”
“I dunno, you’re pretty good in the sack too.”
He turned, winding his arms around her and dipping his hands into her back pockets. “Be careful or we won’t get out of this forest for a completely different reason.”
“You and I are too old to be doing that out here,” she snorted and yelped when he squeezed her butt.
“I’m pretty sure I’ve still got it. I’m in my prime you know.”
“With knees that pop every morning when you get out of the bed? Prime, my ass.”
“At least I don’t complain about my back every morning,” he shot back with a grin.
“Hey, my back hurts because of you,” she teased, poking his stomach. “Now seriously, let’s get back before they send out a search party.”
“Heaven forbid,” Tyler gasped dramatically, and she rolled her eyes.
As they walked, she murmured, “I love you.”
He looked over at her and squeezed her hand and smiled warmly at her. “I love you, pretty girl. More than you’ll ever know.”

Glen and I have been dating for 18 months. About 6 months ago, I moved out of my apartment and into his. I met his family at his younger sister Leslie's wedding.
This weekend, Glen was off work for Easter. We decided to fly down to Texas and spend the weekend with his family. We walked through the airport hand-in-hand. Whenever a fan recognized him, he'd smile and wave. He stopped a couple of times to take pictures with fans, but I didn't mind. I'd step aside and, sometimes, take the picture for the fans.
I have always tried to be respectful of Glen's fans. I never wanted to stop them from meeting him. I didn't want to give them a reason to hate me. Glen was the one who would always cut off his meetings or fan photo shoots.
We smiled when we saw his parents waiting for us by baggage claim. They were both smiling, but his mom looked like she was about to burst. When we got closer, she ran toward us. I stepped aside and allowed Cyndy to hug her son. Glen's father, Glen Sr., walked over to me.
"Hi, Y/N," he smiled as he hugged me.
"Hi, sir," I said as I hugged him.
"Y/N," he elongated as we broke the hug. "I thought I told you to stop calling me 'sir'?"
"You did," I chuckled. "But my father taught me to be respectful."
"Good for him," Glen Sr. laughed, "but I insist. You're practically family!"
"Dad," Glen cut in as he walked over to us, "give her a break."
"All I'm saying is that we can be on a first-name basis," Glen Sr. shrugged.
"Honey," Glen's mom jumped in, "it might be a little awkward for her to call you by your first name since you and your son have the same name."
Glen Sr. looked between Glen and me. "Okay," he started to give in. "But. . ." Never mind. "There's nothing wrong with calling me 'Senior'."
"You're gonna have to call him that," Glen chuckled. "He's not going to let this go."
"I think I can do that," I chuckled. I watched as Glen hugged his father. I gasped when his mother wrapped me in a tight hug.
"My husband is right," she whispered so only I could hear her. "You are part of our family."
She broke the hug, and there was something different in her eyes. I softened my own voice as I said, "I feel like it."
"Good," Cyndy nodded. She reached up and gently moved some hair out of my face. "He truly loves you, Y/N. I've never seen my son this happy with a girl before. You are his everything."
"And he is mine," I said, my voice breaking. "I truly love your son, Cyndy. He makes me feel like the most important person in the world."
We both had tears in our eyes as she reached up and gently held my face in her hands.
"Good," she whispered. "If that ever changes, if he ever stops making you feel like that, you tell me and I'll fix my son."
We both laughed as she pulled me in for another hug. When we broke the hug, I turned to see Glen watching his mom and me. He walked over and instantly wrapped his arm around my waist.
"You two girls ready?" He asked, his eyes lingering on me a little longer before glancing at his mom.
"Yep," Cyndy smiled. She reached over and grabbed my hand, pulling me with her toward the car. I laughed as she yelled over her shoulder, "Make sure to grab Y/N's suitcase, Glen!"
The ride to the Powell house was filled with light conversations. Instead of updating his parents on his most recent role, his parents asked me about my job.
Three months before I started dating Glen, I got a job as an art authenticator. I often worked with different museums, galleries, and auction houses to make sure new paintings bought or put up at auctions were the real thing.
Glen and I met at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The museum was hosting a gala, and Glen was in attendance. While walking around the different exhibits, Glen and I ran into each other. We got to talking and ended up talking all night long. At the end of the night, Glen and I exchanged numbers. He called and asked me out the next day.
"Y/N was recently asked to authenticate a collection donated to the Smithsonian," Glen praised me.
"That's wonderful!" Cyndy cooed. "You must be excited."
"I am," I nodded. I sent Glen a look before admitting to his parents, "And a little nervous."
Glen instantly reached over and grabbed my hand. "Nervous?" His mom asked. "Why would you be nervous, honey? You've done a lot of authentications for different museums."
"I know," I said, looking down at mine and Glen's intertwined hands.
"What changed?" Glen Sr. asked. Glen gave my hand a gentle squeeze.
Glen Sr. and Cyndy exchanged a look that told me that they already knew about all of this. This was their attempt to get me to talk about it.
"She gets more nervous ever since that authenticator in London was disproved in an authentication he made," Glen explained for me.
"His career was ruined, and everything he's ever authenticated was double-checked," I added defensively. "Turns out, three other paintings were forgeries that he didn't catch."
"Okay," Cyndy said slowly, "but you're not him, Y/N. You aren't fooled by forgeries or fakes."
"When it first happened, all of Y/N's work was double-checked," Glen continued.
"It was terrifying," I mumbled. "I never used to doubt my instincts with art, but. . ."
"Your instincts are never wrong, baby," Glen said gently. I looked up at him to see him already looking at me. "You are still the best art authenticator in the country. You could authenticate circles around that moron."
He leaned over and pressed his lips gently to mine. When we broke the kiss, I noticed his mom watching us over her shoulder, and his dad watching us in the rearview mirror.

When we got out of the car, the front door swung open. I smiled when I saw Glen's niece and nephew running toward the driveway.
"Y/N!" Witt and Gwen yelled my name in sync as they ran over to us. With a smile on my face, I knelt down. I was soon tackled by the twins.
"Hey!" Glen chuckled. "What am I? Chopped liver?"
"Absolutely," Lauren laughed as she walked out and hugged her brother.
"Hi, Uncle Glen," Gwen giggled as she left me and hugged Glen. I stood up with Witt still wrapped tightly around me. Glen walked over and teased his nephew.
"She's mine, Witt."
We laughed when he shook his head and tucked his face into the crook of my neck. I smirked as I looked up at Glen.
"Looks like you've got some competition."
For a second, Glen just studied me holding his nephew. "You okay?" I asked, dropping my voice. Glen smiled as he nodded.
"Yeah," he said, his voice sounding a little strange. "I just. . . I love seeing. . . I love you."
"I love you, too," I smiled. He was holding Gwen's hand as he wrapped his arm around my waist. Without another word, Glen led the three of us inside.
The kids got distracted by some new toys their grandparents bought them, so Glen and I were able to talk to his sisters.
"The twins have been talking all week about you two coming home," Lauren chuckled as she poured us two glasses of lemonade.
"You two are all any of us have been talking about all week," Leslie giggled.
"How's everything with work, Y/N?" Lauren's husband, Will, asked me. I took a drink of my lemonade to gather my strength.
"It's fine," I finally forced out. I looked around, knowing I didn't need to lie to anyone in the room.
Because Glen was dating an authenticator, everyone in his family was more aware of authenticators and what we do. After the London authenticator was questioned about some of the paintings he had authenticated, both of Glen's sisters reached out to me to talk about it.
And because I knew that Glen shared everything with his family, I also knew that he had talked to his sisters and parents about how hard of a time I've been having since.
"Come on, honey," Leslie gently soothed. "You can tell us the truth."
"Guys," Glen tried to intervene, "we don't need to talk about this."
"We're just trying. . ."
"Y/N doesn't want to talk about this," Glen cut off Lauren. "We came here to see everyone, but also so Y/N could take a break from work. So, please, let this be a break for her."
He looked at everyone, waiting for them to respond. I, on the other hand, remained focused on my glass of barely drunk lemonade.
"You're right," Lauren nodded.
"We're sorry, Y/N," Leslie said gently. "We didn't mean to push. We care about you."
"It's okay," I quickly tried to brush off.
"Come on, babe," Glen said, taking my hand and pulling me off the barstool. "Let's go unpack."
No one stopped us as we went upstairs to his room. As he put our suitcases on the small couch at the end of the bed, I sat on the edge of the mattress. He didn't join me right away.
"I'm sorry," he mumbled, rubbing his hands on his face.
"It's okay," I shrugged.
"No," he said simply, "it's not. I told them not to bring up that London authenticator. I specifically asked them not to ask you about work."
"Glen," I sighed. When he looked up at me, I was holding my hand out to him.
With a small smile on his face, he walked over, took my hand, and sat next to me. In sync, we lay down on the bed. Glen instantly wrapped his arms around me.
"I'm sorry about my family," he whispered.
"It's fine, Glen. Really," I tried to reassure him. "I know they're just being nice. They're not accusing me of being like the London authenticator. They're checking on me."
"I know, but. . ."
"I know you told them that I was struggling."
Glen sat up, pulling me with him. "Y/N," he stuttered, "I was. . . I didn't mean to. . . I was worried about you. You were depressed and extra stressed. I'd come home from filming to find you at the kitchen table, poring over your old art school textbooks. I could barely get you to eat. I was worried, so I reached out to my sisters. I wasn't trying. . ."
"Glen," I gently shushed him as I reached up and held his face in my hands. "It's okay. I'm not mad that you told your family I was struggling. I'm not mad that they are asking about it. I love that your family is so worried about me. I love that you are so worried about me."
"I am," he said, his voice slightly breaking. "I'm really worried about you, baby."
Still holding his face, I pulled him toward me until his lips pressed against mine. As soon as they did, Glen deepened the kiss. Without breaking the kiss, Glen lay us back down with him hovering over me.
He broke the kiss before things could get too heavy at his parents' house. I smiled when he pressed our foreheads together, slightly rubbing his nose against mine.
"I love you so much, baby," he whispered. "Which means I worry about you."
"I love you so much, Glen," I whispered as he leaned up. "Which means I worry about you, too. Worrying about each other is a good thing."
He stared at me for a second before leaning down and giving me a gentle and quick kiss.
"Should we go back downstairs?" I asked.
"Nah," he chuckled, getting off me and lying next to me. I smiled as he pulled me into his chest. I cuddled into his chest as he started lazily rubbing my back.
Before either of us knew it, we fell asleep.
* * * * *
We spent the entire weekend with Glen and his family. Even though they have their own places, Glen's sisters and their families stayed at their parents' house with us. We woke up Easter morning and started making breakfast while the kids searched for their Easter baskets hidden somewhere in the house.
"Look at you," Glen chuckled as he walked up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. I laughed when he leaned his chin on my shoulder.
"Look at me, what?" I giggled.
"Making the pancakes into cute little bunny rabbits," he said, pointing at the pancake I just flipped.
"Need I remind you?" I teased. "I'm not the one who almost set the apartment on fire."
"You set your apartment on fire?" Lauren laughed as she walked in with her husband and Leslie. I wasn't sure where Leslie's husband was. Probably helping Senior.
"It was our anniversary," Glen sighed, "and I wanted to do something special."
"Showing her why fire insurance is important is not romantic, dude," Leauren's husband teased.
"Ha ha," Glen fake laughed.
"I'm sorry," I said under my breath once everyone was distracted by setting the table. "I didn't mean to get everyone to start teasing you. . ."
"Hey," he gently cut me off and turned me around. "I don't mind a little teasing, baby. I can take it." He lowered his voice as he added, "Especially by you."
Glen leaned in and delicately pressed his lips to mine. Before I could get lost in the kiss, I pushed him away.
"What's with that pout?" He chuckled.
"You're making me burn the bunny pancakes."
"So sorry, baby," he chuckled, kissing my pout. "I'll take the burnt ones."
He kissed my cheek again before finally letting me get back to the pancakes. Throughout breakfast, the kids happily talked about what they got in their baskets. They then started talking about how they were going to find all of the Easter eggs during the Annual Powell Family Easter Egg Hunt.
Every year, Glen and his brothers-in-law hide eggs all over the backyard. The kids run around and find them. Every once in a while, they'd come and ask how many were left.
"I'm done!" Witt announced to the table. "Can we go find the eggs now?"
"Not everyone is done, bud," Will chuckled.
We tortured the kids for another fifteen minutes before we finally said we were ready. I helped Cyndy, Lauren, and Leslie clean up breakfast while Glen, Will, and Thomas finished hiding the eggs. We knew the kids were starting their hunt when we heard excited squeals.
The four of us laughed before finishing up. "Well," Cyndy chuckled, "we'd better go outside."
When we walked outside, the kids were running around while the men watched with matching smiles on their faces. I walked over to Glen, and he instantly wrapped his arm around my waist and kissed my temple.
"Hey, gorgeous."
"How's the hunt going?" I asked, nodding toward the kids.
"They have found half of the eggs," Glen smiled.
"Uncle Glen!" Gwen yelled. "Come help me!"
"Coming, little bug!" Glen yelled back. He gave me a kiss before jogging after his niece. I walked over and sat next to his sisters, my eyes never leaving Glen.
"Does he always do that?"
I turned to see Cyndy smiling at me. His sisters were staring at me, too.
"Do what?" I asked.
"Kiss you before he walks away?" His mom asked, sending a wink to her daughters.
"He does," I chuckled a little bit awkwardly. "Whether it's leaving to film somewhere for a couple of months, leaving for a few hours, or just going down to the mailbox, Glen always kisses me before leaving."
I felt my face burn as his mom and sisters giggled. When I looked away, my eyes instantly found Glen. He was running around, pausing and jumping around as he helped Gwen. Of course, he was only doing this to make Gwen laugh. And it was working.
I loved seeing him like this. Whenever we were around his family, there was a side of him that always came out. This side was sweet, gentle, caring, and (for lack of a better word) fatherly. All I could do when we were with his family was imagine how amazing a father he will be someday.
I just hope I'm lucky enough to be the one who gets to carry his children.
I think about my life with Glen a lot. Whenever I do, I end up dreaming about our future. Big house. Maybe a farm. Kids. Family dinners. All of it sounds perfect.
If I were honest with myself, I wasn't entirely sure if Glen pictured all of it with me, too.
To be fair, I knew he loved me. But there's still a gap between loving someone and wanting to have a future and build a life with that person. I just hoped that Glen wanted that, too.
A little while later, Glen jogged over to us with his hands behind his back and a dangerously playful smirk on his face.
"I got something for you," he said, his voice teasing.
"Oh, do you?" I challenged. I laughed when he showed me the Easter egg he had from behind his back. "An Easter egg? Glen, go give that to your niece or nephew."
"I can't do that," he said, shaking his head and walking over to me.
"And why is that?" I smirked. He grabbed my hand, pulling me to my feet.
"Because it has your name on it," he said, dropping his voice to a whisper. I looked down and noticed that it did actually have my name written on it. And I could tell that it was Glen's handwriting.
"Oh," I whispered. "It does."
I looked up at Glen to see a small sparkle of nerves in his eyes.
"Open it," he whispered, handing it to me. I studied him before slowly taking it from him. When I did, I could tell that something was inside, and it wasn't chocolate.
Yep. It wasn't chocolate.
My eyes widened, and my heart jumped into my throat when I pulled a beautiful engagement ring out of the egg.
"Glen," I gasped. He smiled as he took the ring from me. I heard him take a shaky breath as he got down on one knee. I could hear his family excitedly giggle, but I couldn't look away from Glen.
"Y/N," he started, "it's no secret that I love you. I have been in love with you since the night we first met. Out of everything at that gala, you were the most beautiful thing in the whole museum. Every moment we've spent together has been better and better. Every day we've been together, I've fallen more and more in love with you. I want a future with you, Y/N. I want a family with you. I want a life with you. I have no future, no happy future, without you in it. So, please, say you'll be in it. Say you'll be in my life with me forever. Say you'll spend the rest of your life with me."
"Of course I will," I said, my voice breaking. "I love you so much, baby."
"I love you, too," he smiled up at me. "But I need to officially ask you the question."
"So hurry up and ask it!"
We laughed when his mother excitedly yelled. It was then that we finally glanced over at his family. They had walked a little way away from us to give us privacy, but close enough for them to hear us.
"You know," Glen chuckled as we turned back toward each other, "if you say yes to my question, you won't just go into a future with me. They will be there, too."
"I'm okay with that," I said, my eyes filling with happy tears.
"Good," Glen said, his voice lowering. Time seemed to slow as we stared at each other. Finally, Glen broke the silence.
"Y/N," he whispered, "I love you so much. I can't imagine my life without you. Will you marry me?"
"I can't imagine my life with anyone else," I said, my voice breaking as the happy tears started streaming down my face. "I can't imagine being added into anyone else's family. I can't imagine carrying anyone else's children. I can't imagine having a life without you, Glen. I love you so much. Of course, I will marry you."
With a happy, relieved laugh, Glen slipped the ring on my finger. He stood up, gently grabbed my face, and kissed me. I gripped his shirt and pulled him closer to me. We would've deepened the kiss, but we forced ourselves to stop when his family started to cheer.
We broke the kiss as his family ran over to us. They took their turns hugging us and congratulating us. Lastly, Glen's mom walked over to me. She pulled me in for a tight hug.
"I told you that you were already part of our family," she whispered. "Now we get to make it official."
I broke the hug, and she instantly reached up, wiping away my tears. "I couldn't ask for a better family to marry into," I whispered.
I looked behind her to see Glen holding Witt in his arms. The look on Witt's face made my heart melt.
"Best Easter ever!" Witt yelled, making everyone laugh. Glen hugged Witt before looking over at me.
"You've got that one right, bud," he said, but was looking at me. "Best Easter ever."
