Artist Statement: In my childhood, I was surrounded by adults who had toxic relationships. I have witnessed cases of domestic abuse and psychological abuse, all of it to be excused with love. The intent was to recreate a story of a toxic relationship, the aftermath of the damage. I wanted to show how relationships most of the time portray a facade to the world but you will never know if it’s a healthy one. The use of the siren and sand, is a hint to the Siren myths. Where a Siren could only die because of a heartbreak, in this case she was devastated after realizing that she had harmed her partner, killing herself in the end. I have seen what a heartbreak can do to people, they become agoraphobic towards the world and loose their sense of dignity. I have seen how an abusive relationship takes a mental toll on someone’s mental health. All the reason as to why I don’t believe love is real. If it is real, you will always end up hurt. You cannot have the roses without the thorns.
