For my project I want to showcase the isolation of quarantine through provocative interior HDR images. I want to highlight the natural light that comes into the home through windows and open doors, but offset that natural light with somewhat artificial colors within the scene. I want my images to provoke some discomfort in the viewer as some compositions and color choices are unusual and awkward. Although quarantine is a dark and scary time for many, I want my images to be both fun and bubbly as well as subtly sinister and eerie.

Alison Rossiter, “Density 1919″ (2019)
Alison Rossiter is a contemporary photographer whose work is based off of the utilization of expired photo paper. Rossiter collects different photo paper from different decades in order to create interesting and unusual images. She explains that the images make themselves and are made by chance. Because of how old they are, the expired photo paper she collects and uses to make her work has been affected by different environmental factors like light exposure, mold and finger prints. In addition to taking advantage of naturally occurring marks in her work, Rossiter also uses chemicals in her process by pouring them on completely exposed paper in selective areas. Although her process is unique, Rossiter still takes inspiration from traditional photographer throughout history in order to make her images so compelling. In a way, her work is very much about history and serves as a historical account of photography itself. Rossiter disproves the idea that photo paper expires and is unusable by giving it new life and a new purpose in her work, giving these traditionally unusable materials a new admirable context.Â
I think that this image as well as Rossiter’s other work provide the viewer with not only a simple and aesthetically pleasing artwork, but a powerful historical account of the history of photography in the twentieth century. Her work shows us the effects that time has on art and art materials, giving us a new appreciation for our moment in history and the metaphor of expiration dates.
