One thing I’ve noticed whenever people discuss the greatest redemption arcs in fiction is that the conversation almost always centres on male characters. Zuko from Avatar of course deserves the praise he gets. His redemption is one of the best ever written. It shows that redemption isn’t a straight line and that people relapse as well as make mistakes, so have to actively choose to be better every day.
But I think we overlook female characters who have equally compelling journeys.
Take, Regina Mills from Once Upon a Time. She starts as one of the show’s most ruthless villains, yet her redemption isn’t a simple switch from evil to good. She struggles with anger, grief, revenge, and self doubt. She falls back into old habits and loses people’s trust, which she has to earn back over years. Her story isn’t about becoming perfect…it’s about choosing to keep trying despite her past. And her redemption lasts the whole show, from season 1/2-7.
And that is what makes both Regina and Zuko’s arcs so powerful to me. Neither character is redeemed because they’re forgiven overnight. Redemption doesn’t work like that. They’re redeemed because they consistently make better choices even when it’s difficult.
I think Regina deserves to be mentioned alongside characters like Zuko whenever we talk about the greatest redemption arcs in television. She proves that redemption isn’t about erasing your past. It is about accepting it, taking responsibility for it and deciding that it won’t define your future.
when ppl say regina from ouat should've ended the show by retiring in peace to go live with her horses or whatever it's like.......so you want none of what happened to her to have mattered and you want to freeze her in the life she wanted at 18 forever? yes when she was a teenager she didn't want to be the queen because "being the queen" meant marrying her mom's fuckass sixty year old ex. but it happened to her anyway. she was forced to be the queen and then she embraced being the evil queen and then she made herself the mayor of her little groundhog day town and then she was briefly deposed because everyone was mad at her but no one else was good at it so after she had changed for the better she became mayor again and she was happy about it because she liked it and was good at it. and in s7 she guided and taught other women leaders in fairytale world and in the real world she became a community leader who people looked to for answers and advice. her character trajectory is going from sheep to wolf to shepherd, victim to villain to hero, unwilling powerless queen to feared queen who takes power no matter the cost to beloved queen who is given power by the people and who empowers the people in return. that's a good arc! it's a meaningful story! why do so many people who claim to like her want to take it away from her in favor of pretending she's a person she stopped being decades ago?

oh my god it hurts
and it's going to hurt forever
every now and then I see people passing screencaps of these posts around, and in the months after I made this post there were people checking in on me assuming I was going through grief or depression or something
to set the record straight, the context is that I had covid and was bleeding from my throat and lungs, but for some ungodly reason, I was feverishly driven to drink lemonade and kept screaming and writhing because I was pouring fizzy lemon juice on open throat wounds

there are some movies where people will be like “I think it needed more female characters :/” but I think the lack of female characters makes complete sense because this is dumbass guy behavior. this is a fool’s plot that the average woman would have handled better or totally avoided. the hubris of men was a core element of the film. not that women cannot be blinded by their own hubris but there is a reason guys are more likely to die in bizarre freak ‘accidents’. I say this as a man. it’s why horror movies with a final girl make sense, a 22 year old guy would be sooooo certain he could take the slasher in combat and die badly.
in a misogynistic society, men are taught from birth that they should be able to dominate others automatically, they often develop the false impression that they are untouchable and capable of defeating any threat. women are repeatedly reminded that they can be harmed and told it is their fault if they are harmed, that makes them more likely to be risk aware and risk averse. again, I’m not saying women cannot do risky things and make boneheaded choices, I’m just saying that it makes more sense for a bunch of men to go on a failed expedition and start killing each other. because they keep doing that.
it’s why the horror trope of the wife repeatedly telling her husband there is something wrong with their new house/they are in danger and the husband totally discounting her worries makes so much sense, similar things happens in real life every day
exactly. you guys get it. perfect dichotomy.

in other developments re german/anglo cultural exchange on breadstuffs, this image was posted to a facebook group yesterday
the following events ensued:
1. predictable lively discussion on the preparation of Wienerschnitzel, in which natives and wurstaboos are pro-puff and everybody else is like *confused dog head tilt* why wouldn’t you want the crust to stay ~attached to the thing you put it on? as with other fried foods?
2. thirty “Bad Schnitzel is my band name” jokes
3. thirty “Bad Schnitzel is my stripper name” jokes
4. one “ah yes, Bad Schnitzel! a lovely spa town” joke
5. this absolute masterpiece:

disabled ppl we need to start lying to nosy people okay? you tell me i'm too young to need a cane and i will tell you point blank that maybe you should tell that to the guy who ran me over. you don't get an explanation of my health issues you get lies and depending on how much of an asshole i want to be that lie will be anything from a humble car crash to a 1 billion lions attack. mind yr business.
"i could never live like that" well maybe you'll have to because this happened overnight. yeah you heard me i was the most able bodied man in the world but then one morning bam i woke up disabled. yeah you could have that too. there's no cure either you'll just wake up one morning and now you have to live like me
"what happened" well have you ever seen looney tunes? yeah an anvil landed on me and squished me flat.
Betrayed and backstabbed by your scheming evil advisor? Psch. Skill issue. Absolute amateur problem. Just hire two of them and reward them for snitching on each other. Just make sure that neither of them is gay or they'll just end up hate-fucking each other and fucking you over all the same.
"hire two evil advisors but make sure neither of them is gay" are you hearing yourself right now. be serious
they were onto something, they just missed a key point. all evil advisers are gay, so hire one guy and one lady. that way theyll scheme against each other without the risk of them teaming up out of lust.

This is for the THREE people who were interested in a story about Rokk experiencing sexual assault and how that impacted his character as an exploited laborer on Braal - all with SPORTS in the background.
Mind the tags, but nothing is graphic.
