everyone’s so worried about how ben solo just returning to the person he was before kylo ren would be “too easy” after all he’s done. how adopting that name would mean regression for the character and a lack of culpability for the things he did as kylo ren.
and I have to wonder, has it ever occurred to anyone that ben solo has never really existed at all? that there is no ben solo for him to return to? that there was never a time ben existed alone in his own mind, allowed to develop his own thoughts and view of the world outside of another’s manipulation and lies? that he never had the chance to develop into the person ben would have grown up to be, since snoke began grooming him long before even his adolescence?
how exactly, I have to ask, would ben building himself from the ground up be “too easy”? how would forcing him to do the tough and painful work of getting to know himself as himself equal regression for this character? how would becoming someone capable of understanding the moral weight of what he’s done to his galaxy and his family and himself be negating culpability for the things he’s done?
snoke didn’t give ben the chance to become someone new - he was molding him into kylo ren from the beginning. and I can’t help feeling that ben reclaiming his name is an important step in defining himself for himself, for the first time ever.
would you look at that? a post made a full year ago and it’s more relevant than ever.
#the real question is WHY don’t people get this upset with the notion of Vader becoming Anakin again as he ultimately DID? #I think it has nothing to do with Ben himself but that there’s a bunch of people who want him punished and suffering forever #and it makes them uncomfortable to see him have a human name because they don’t want to see him humanized or thinks he deserves it#to which I say Kylo Ren returning to Ben is the ONLY way forward #he’s not going to become a different goody two shoes person! #the point is that he never /was/ this different person #Ben uses the physical and metaphorical mask of Kylo Ren in the same way Anakin did with Vader #to distance himself from his actions #and what has it caused but untold misery #for a new trilogy that seems to be so focused on balance going forward #the balance Ben needs is to come to terms with himself #his true self #Ben Solo #and ALSO come to terms with the things he has done as Kylo Ren #he’s never going to be whole unless he stops denying who he is to justify what he’s become #meta #Anna rambles #my son #star wars (via @themoonslayer)
