trying to lock in with all these fics i need to write in a major way the next couple of days, so activity levels are probably going to dip (fingers crossed) on the dash, as well as with ask answering.
jaydami week (1/8 complete, 5/7 at least started, 2 almost done)

Neil and Andrew aren't really the hugging type, but there's this morning — Neil is lost in his thoughts, not pleasant ones, leaning against the kitchen counter. Andrew has just woken up, he enters the room still half-asleep and, without thinking, the first thing he needs to do is walk toward Neil to cup his chin and check the scar left on his cheekbone since the last match. Neil has no reaction, until Andrew, a bit dizzy from sleep inertia and getting up too fast, almost collapses against him. Neil hugs his waist with one arm to help him restore his balance. Then, without even thinking about it, his body just searching for comfort to escape his thoughts, he rests his cheek on Andrew's head, breathing in the scent of his hair. Andrew doesn't move. He just leans more comfortably against him and closes his eyes for a minute. It's short. It's unusual. But when they move apart, both feel calm and warm, a rare and precious feeling.

Ok but consider, whumpee being rescued/escaping and realizing the world has moved on without them...
Their partner/spouse has started seeing someone else, believing whumpee to be dead. Bonus if the new partner is less "damaged" than whumpee, making them feel even worse about what happened to them.
Their apartment/house is occupied by new inhabitants, potentially leaving whumpee homeless.
Their place of employment simply replaced them with a new hire, and whumpee has to find a new job with a huge gap in their resume, depending on how long they were tortured for.
Their friends have all moved on, perhaps even finding a new friend to replace whumpee.
Their family has converted their bedroom into a storage room, and maybe even gave some of their things away, believing they weren't coming back.
Their favorite restaurant/coffee shop/bar/etc. has closed down, and whumpee can't even go there for their favorite food/drink after being tortured for so long.
Oh yeah and add all the trauma from being actually whumped :)
The people who they thought wouldn’t care were the only ones who did.
The professor they thought hated them kept their transcript up and open, took care of packing up their dorm and putting it into storage instead of just throwing everything away.
Their nosy picky coworker had been the one to thoughtfully pack up their cubicle/locker, watering their office plant so that even if they had been replaced, the few pictures they had of family and friends and their little plant had been looked after.
The neighbor they’d had arguments with mowed their yard, picked up their mail, took care of their pets after realizing Whumpee was gone. Whumpee’s house or apartment may be in someone else’s name but their pet is living safe and fed at the neighbors, waiting for them to come back.
It throws into contrast just how much everything else hurt.
Some thoughts on Qifrey and his feelings on the possibility of healing.
Something I think about often when it comes to Qifrey is how much he would be terrified if he was presented with the actual chance to eliminate the silverwood in his body.
I really like the idea of the silverwood being a representation of trauma- it manifested due to a traumatic event, it affects all of Qifreys relationships and his ability to communicate, it colors Qifreys entire worldview, etc- and one thing about lifelong issues with trauma is that we tend to adjust our own identity and perceptions around them.
An obstacle that a lot of people don’t anticipate when they start actively trying to process and heal is their fear at removing something that has been a constant in their lives. Humans are incredible in that they adapt to pretty much anything long term if they’re given enough time- abuse, poverty, pain, etc.
We’re like that when it comes to our mental health too- we have a tendency to adapt to our own responses to trauma, to take them on as “normal” and to root our own identities in what has harmed us.
Qifrey has spent almost 2 decades adjusting to and perceiving the tree and his body and his responses as an inherent part of himself. I don’t think he separates the trees response as a separate entity anymore- it’s not his body and the tree, it’s “this body” in his head.
I believe he wants it gone in that he wants to safely live his life- but I also think he would be terrified to find out who he is without it.
Like, I’ve talked about Qifreys low self esteem in previous posts. He blames himself for the “sins” he’s committed, but part of coping with that is the belief that he’s like this- that his perceived self is so terrible- is *because* he’s a silverwood host.
Being faced with the aspect of this part of his identity disappearing- well, then he’d have to find out if he actually was just inherently terrible without it.
When we live with our trauma for this long, we adapt to it. And part of that is knowing that our reactions and communication capabilities have been impacted by it. It’s not necessarily that trauma is being used to excuse things we’ve done, but we are often aware that it explains the reason behind those actions and responses.
But when we remove the source problem, whether it’s taking antidepressants or no longer having a parasite in you, suddenly you’re left without the thing you’ve been able to blame for your behaviors.
Obviously, it takes time and hard work to redirect responses that have long been ingrained, but it’s a terrifying and frustrating experience when you lose the active reason behind them.
I feel like Qifrey would be terrified that he no longer can be anything else but a silverwood host, even if the tree were gone. I think he’d be scared he’d still be the same- avoidant of touch and affection, unable to be honest with others, habitually harming himself, etc- but it would just be *his* fault this time.
That’s obviously not how it works- ingrained responses due to trauma and mental illness take time and effort and energy to challenge and change or redirect. But I think Qifrey has very little patience and understanding for himself, so it would take him a while and a lot of reminders to give himself time and grace.

like yes actually there is a conversation to be had about how a characters actions are framed and how they thematically fit with the rest of the story and it can in fact reflect the author's beliefs. some authors are even trying to make a point
not all depiction is glorification but sometimes it is and you need to be able to tell the difference. not because your immortal soul will be tainted by reading The Bad One, but because you need to have reading comprehension skills
