I chose to represent myself as a figure of power—a dictator more or less. I positioned myself next to Kim-Il-Sung to create this connection, and used the other elements to convey a sense of power over my surroundings. The large head could be taken literally as an ethereal surveillance method, or figuratively to represent control. The contrails could be interpreted as being from missiles or planes, or to convey forward momentum/motion.

I think the next revolution will be virtual reality, or other augmented forms of existence. I created a fantastic world in which a VR-user would rule. There is a window from the virtual world into our world that the user’s body exists in. I gave him a virtual body different from his own as commentary on the practice of being “someone else” in cyberspace. I used different languages and a military inspiration to give the impression that the VR user is the ruler of this virtual world.Â
Carla Gannis is a professor of digital art at the Pratt Institute in New York, and has gained attention for her works, which often blend pop-culturally relevant digital imagery with classic scenes and paintings. The “selfie” is a prominent theme in her recent exhibits—she often depicts the act of herself taking a selfie, in a less-than-realistic style that could be likened to glitch/psychedelic art or a blending of “cyber” fixtures, photography, cartoon, and pattern. Her works do not often contain photorealistic textures, and gain much of their perspective/depth from the use of simple gradients. I used gradients to construct a representation of Carla’s likeness, purposefully leaving shards missing to pay homage to the “glitched” appearance of some of her works.
