I was trained in the dark arts of the cover letter by my mother, who is a hiring manager. And her training has paid off: I've been consistently told my cover letters are excellent. Let me pass on the wisdom.

The job of a cover letter is to give a prospective employer strictly more information than is on the resume. This is where you take the resume contents and put them into context. You look at the job requirements (you are looking at the job requirements before applying, right?) and look at your resume and ask the question (in your head) "why would a person think this candidate would be good for this job?" and your cover letter is the answer to that question. If you don't answer that question, the hiring manager is going to have to do it themselves, and you have way more information to work with than they do.

This is especially important if you're moving from one industry to another, because then the relevant connections aren't obvious. It's also very important if you're overqualified, because then you can use the letter to say "I know it looks like this job would be too entry-level for me, but I'm interested to pursue it for reasons x, y, and z". You can also use this space to explain away something that might otherwise be disqualifying, like job-hopping or a long break in employment. The tone to strike here is always matter-of-fact and constrained to topic - don't go into detail about health stuff or personal tragedy, just tell them what they need to hear: that this period of your resume was affected by [bad thing] but that it's now in the past and you're looking forward to the next chapter. Remember, one of the things they're trying to learn is whether you'd be content in this role, or whether you'd be miserable and leave after 2 months, which would force them to do all the work of hiring again. You're trying to establish that you will fit right in and not cause problems. Knowing what drew you to this job in particular (and don't just say 'money', that's true for everyone) helps with that.

Alright, so, to start off: I'm not calling anyone out here. Specifically stating this because I also didn't know the etiquette for sending asks when I first got Tumblr, so thought I'd make this little how-to guide in case anyone wasn't sure like I wasn't.

Now, typically speaking, if someone shares an ask game, they're looking to get asks! Especially if they tag it "send asks" or similar! So if you just like and/or reblog one without sending an ask to the person you got it from yourself, that can be seen as rude. Especially if after you reblog, the person you got it from sends an ask from that game to you. The point of ask games is usually to get to know each other and do back and forth, so if it's a one-sided interaction, it kinda sucks. There are of course exceptions to this, but in general, when someone reblogs an ask game, they'd like community!

Now, the button to send someone an ask is typically at the top of their blog, unless they turned it off (which is when you won't find one at all). Mine looks like this:

That's where you can type your ask! If the blog has the toggle set, you can hit that bottom lever thing to ask anonymously (so your blog's name isn't shown).

Now, if you want to get something specific from the ask game post before you go to the ask box, here's a few more pictures:

The reblogger is the one you want to send the ask to. Typically if the OP has "prompts" or "creation" or "ask game" in their name, they don't want asks themselves. They just like making prompts or ask games for others. But if they don't have those things (like myself or my mutuals that have made ask games), you can send one to OP, too! More often than not, ask games don't have a time limit if the person doesn't say in their reblog "only send me asks from this until [xyz time/date]". And you can always send more than one if that suits you! I know I certainly don't mind a lot of asks as long as people know it might take me a while to get to them.

The links and that copy thing there are if you want to get like the link of the ask game to send with your ask or something from the post itself. A long press with your finger on mobile will copy whatever paragraph or line (if the paragraph is only one line, that is) you had your finger on. Just hold and press, then that pop up will come up, so you hit copy, then long press to get the pop up to paste into the ask! Saves me time or accidentally losing the question/link for I wanted to ask in between going from the post to the ask box.
