I just came across a post on Reddit where someone mentioned that Joseph Morgan was interested in having Klaus's first love interest on the show be Bonnie. However, Julie Plec and Caroline Dries decided against it because they were concerned that a Klaus and Bonnie pairing (Klonnie) would overshadow the relationship between Damon and Elena (Delena). As a result, they chose to pair Klaus with Caroline Forbes instead.

Joseph often said he and Kat got along really well, and Kat frequently praised him for being sweet. At recent con appearances, she mentioned how hard it was to see “Klaus” in him because he was always kind to her. She even told fans that Joseph stayed with her on set to read lines at 3am when she had no one else, and she once invited him to her family’s Thanksgiving. Despite what some fandom narratives suggest, Joseph and Kat were the close friends people often assume he was with Candice.

What you're wrong about is the reasoning behind Julie Plec and Caroline Dries shutting down Klonnie. It wasn’t about story. It was rooted in racism and a refusal to present Bonnie as desirable. They didn’t want to deepen interest in Bonnie beyond her existing fans.

Even in season 2, Klaus's connections to witches (which we learn about through Luka, Katherine, Isobel, and the Martins) set the stage for a natural bond with Bonnie. Greta even chose to stay with Klaus. Add in Jeremy cheating on Bonnie in season 3 and her growing distance from Elena and the Salvatores, and the setup for Klonnie made perfect sense.

Klonnie shippers were vocal enough to reach the actors, who later acknowledged the pairing. In response, Klaroline was created to silence Klonnie, romanticize Klaus, and lower Caroline’s moral standing to better align with Delena. Klaroline fans have claimed for over a decade it wasn’t made canon to avoid competing with Delena, but its purpose always seemed more strategic than romantic.

If you aren't aware Kat has said on the Driven Minds Podcast: that she believes decisions regarding Bonnie were based around her being a black woman (Storylines she'd get or not get, her hair, her clothes and the romantic choices she'd gotten.) If she were white the writing would've been different. On this podcast this was the first time Kat mentioned pay discrepancy which was being the lowest paid cast member for the first six years.

On a panel I shared here Kat is explaining how Bamon (and this applies to other Bonnie's ships) wouldn't have worked or came about because of racism. The only vampire Bonnie could date was Enzo because he was never as popular and loved as Damon (and the other male/female cast members.)

Late but omg…your account speaking to my soul! Ian and Kat (especially Ian) admit to playing the characters as romantic but then fans will call you insane saying “I don’t see romantic chemistry at all! They are like brother and sister 🥺” or “can’t men and women just be friends?” but say that about Klaroline (an accidental ship that serves no purpose to plot besides Julie’s self inserting yet again) people ready to jump at your throat.

Kat and Ian tried to get Bamon canon they really did, even post the show now Kat told people once at a panel to go online to find out about Bamon (and other things), Ian brings up Bamon all the time in confusion.. see this post here by my lovely friend Rikki. Kat flat out says Bamon didn’t happen because of racism AND because Damon was a popular character thus Damon 2.0 (Enzo) aka watered down Damon I love shit talking those writers though!

Bonnie LEAPED in Damon’s arms, secured them short legs of hers around Damon’s waist as he swayed their bodies but “sibling energy” I mean, if this is what you do with your siblings.. alright along with Damon constantly being used to side-eye or interrupt Bonnie’s relationships Jamie, Kai, Jeremy and Enzo all had this . As for the “we need male and female friendships!” Seemingly has to be the argument whenever a black girl is involved in said pairing. Julie recently said that Bonnie had to be the one who didn’t fall for Damon’s quote “baby blue eyes” bullshit. Then quoted, Bamon as the third PLATONIC love story of the series and no one can forget insulting Elena about her no integrity bc bonnie has too much to get with Damon.

I mean? It’s just funny, because Damon has slept with or had some type of romantic fling with almost every woman he has shared a screen with but Bonnie. Julie talks about Bonnie with the highest of standards as her code for limiting Bonnie from things she has no problem putting Elena and Caroline in which means their standards are hot garbage apparently. If Bonnie’s standards are so high an unattainable for these vampires like Damon… why does she become friends with him? Why did she cry when he finally man’d up and read his letter to her? Julie talks so much BS that she doesn’t know she’s talking in circles besides her obvious racism. Bonnie’s too good and too pure why does she remain friends with any of them? If Julie really believed Bonnie’s too good for the bad boy, why have the “good” boy Jeremy cheat on her with a ghost, then detail to Elena how he’s never loved anyone the way he loved Anna - wasting Bonnie’s time and efforts.. If she’s too good and too pure why place her with Enzo who was physically violent just as everybody else had been ps- did you know Caroline Dries made sure Kat knew about Bonenzo last?

Julie, Caroline Dries etc etc all just didn’t see their BLACK LEAD as worthy of anything. Kat wanted Bonnie to be bi as easily as S5. Of course, they said no and in TO Freya is Bi. Bonnie can’t date a Mikaelson, but Davina, the white witch they spend an entire season 1 infantilizing by calling her a child and those babydoll like dresses can fuck a mikaelson.

Damon needed some development, but that could never be attained in that writing room resulting him down to Elena’s coffin. Even if they went the Bamon route hypothetically speaking he’d still need some extra work but Bamon was right there. Show us why Bonnie values him as a friend even. Make him do a grand gesture or sacrifice for her but ughhhhhh. If ANYBODY else was in that Prison World with Damon they would’ve had sex for months on end 😭. Wouldn’t have thought twice about Elena ffs.
