Interviewer: I almost brought you a jar of pickles
gingersnapbakesâ:
âYes.â He snapped, for some reason even though it was hardly anything to be mad about. âSome complications happened, honestly I donât remember what the doc told me.âÂ
âI wouldâve-â come with you. His body had leant forward, hand reaching out for her. But then she continues and talks about how she didnât want anyone that knew her there and he pulls back just as quickly. It takes a bit for him to think about why she had left and he understands now, really. In the end, itâs what heâs been fighting to do now which he finds ironic. He sees the irony in the fact that she wants to stay in Frostford now that heâs finally doing his best to leave and it makes him wonder if they were never really meant to be together after all. If Caroline was just meant to be a passing train, breaking his heart so he could move on and understand what it meant to care about someone.Â
Stephan hesitates, moving away from her station to go back to his table. He looks away as he considers how to respond. âFrostford is your home, Caroline. It shouldnât matter if anyone wants you here or not. Make us want you.â He doesnât add that he wants her there. That if she was staying then he would stay if it meant being with her again because he doesnât want to put himself out there again only for her to take it back as easily as she did before.
âIâm sorry about that.â She didnât say anything after that. Her hands gripped the edge of the table behind her just to keep her legs from giving out on her. Caroline dropped the subject all together because she knew that she didnât want to add to more to his annoyance at her. It was his life and she wasnât a part of it anymore. Swallowing, she then tried to look at him. Without the fear of tears running down her face. But she sniffled, which she immediately covered up with a cough and cleared her throat. âI know. But-â She sighed, and nodded. âYouâre right. I should.. do that. If that doesnât happen, I guess Frostford isnât really for me.â Caroline couldnât hide the sadness in her voice or stop the tears from falling so instead she turned back to her station and closed her eyes. The last thing she wanted was to cry all over her cookies.
âIâll finish these and Juanita said I could be out front if needed so Iâll see if they need my help there.â She was just making excuses not to be near him when it fact she does want to be near him. It was just a sorry excuse because her apology was not enough, nor her explanation did nothing to make them feel better. It made her feel like crap while it probably did him on his self-esteem when she basically made it clear she didnât want him to be there. Which wasnât true but at the same time it made perfect sense to her back in the day. Now, she knew it was a dick move.
Biting her lower lip, she tried to get her breathing even by exhaling through her mouth. It did nothing to stop the sniffling. These would be the worst tasting cookies on the planet, she gathered. She always believed that someoneâs feelings would affect their baking - and in turn, affect the taste of the baked goods. If she wanted to keep her job, she needs to get out of the muck sheâs currently in. Turning to him, she asked, âCan you give me five minutes? I just need a breather.â
What a way to wake up to. Iâm going to sulk in a corner. Iâll get to replies... slowly. Thank you for your patience.
mrsjolenedyerâ:
âYeah, I didnât have my license at the time, so directing a huge truck wasnât my speciality.â She finished off her pretzel as the other answered her question. âOh, sweetie. You shouldnât cry over someone embarrassinâ ya. Youâve just gotta do one better.â Finishing off her drink, she quickly ordered another one. She chuckled at the question. âNo, revenge isnât really in me these days. Iâve had three kids. Iâm tired,â she joked. âIâve been busy filling orders for my little shop out of state. What about you? Howâs life been treatinâ ya?â
âStill! Baddass, I say.â Caroline chuckled while taking a sip of her drink. âWell, now I wouldnât exactly cry. But if you had asked me like five years ago, I wouldâve definitely cried. In college, I slipped and fell during a frat party and I felt like everyone saw and laughed at me. But in reality, only a few people saw but they were also too drunk to care.â When Jolene said that she didnât do revenge anymore, she pretended to frown. âWell that sucks, guess Iâll stick to voodoo then.â
âHow old are they? Iâm sure theyâre great kids. And yes, probably very tiring. I have three nieces and two nephews... For now. Iâm just the cool aunt and Iâm tired when they want to spend time with me. I donât even want to think how their parents are doing.â There was also the case of her ex having twins. But she didnât want to talk about that. Not until she gets a few drinks in her system.

mariahogdenâ:
âTypically? I wake up at 5, start my run at 5:30, finish around 7 and then drink like 4 cups of coffee between 7 and 10 am,â Mariah chuckled. âIâm just a morning person I guess. Always have been. Sleep, though necessary, did not play a major factor in Mariahâs life. Perhaps that was half the reason she didnât make sense to most people, she was always speaking from a lack of rest. Mariah squealed slightly when she agreed, clapping her hands together. Running with other people was fun. Though she enjoyed her daily podcasts, she could save that for her night run. âGreat! We can start tomorrow and we can work you up to double digits like me.â She winked playfully in Carolineâs direction, not expecting her to actually want to run as much as Mariah did.Â
âAre you sure youâre a morning person? Cause 4 cups of coffee sounds a lot to be taken before 10am.â She questioned, grinning as she teased the woman. Though sheâs not the one to judge, she needed her coffee fix in the morning too. But probably not as much as Mariah. âHow many cups of coffee do you need to take in a day anyway?â Then she added with a hint of grimace, âUh, donât sound too excited. Fair warning, I might die tomorrow in the middle of the run. Itâs been a while since my last actual run.â

gingersnapbakesâ:
âYes, Aurora and Eric.â His head cocked sardonically. âWe never discussed any names considering it wasnât emotional for us. I needed some names when I found out.â His lips pursed as he remembered the moment that the nurse that had asked him and the shock when the names just came out. A part of him wanted to feel sorry for using the names but he couldnât bring himself to feel sorry. âDonât,â he stopped her. âI didnât know her all too well so itâs fine. The kids will have a mom one day so theyâll be fine too.â He added.
âHow do you even know Iâm great now, Caroline? You left.â He threw it back at her like another cheap shot. âI want the truth, Caroline. Why does it matter if I end up hating you for the rest of our lives anyway? Itâs not like youâre going to stay this time, are you?â He asked, looking directly at her.
All she could do was nod, not wanting to add fuel to the fire of their argument. It wasnât really an argument, more like a heated conversation. Confusion settled on her face, not getting the information correctly. âYou got a woman pregnant, and she died...?â Too much information at once while trying to get him not to hate her was giving her a headache. She probably needed a drink after this.
âYou were a great guy back then, I donât think youâd change that much.â At his words, and the fact that never called her by her full name, she glanced down at her hands. They were fidgeting. âI got scared.â Caroline said. âI wanted to go to college. I didnât want to be stuck in town without being able to see what the world could offer me. I never really got far, but it was liberating. I didnât my mom breathing down my back with every move I made. I didnât have anyone who knew me there, I could have a fresh start.â
âI donât know. I want to stay because Frostford is home. I realized a little too late. But I donât think anyone needs- or wants me here.â
gingersnapbakesâ:
âAurora.â He grits out, no longer caring that she would know that he named his kids after what they had planned for their kids. Sure, it was a dick move to pick the name Eric but technically speaking, he suggested Aurora for their girlâ which obviously was never going to exist. âM-My wife?â He asks shallowly with a laugh. âThereâs no wife. She died giving birth to them.â He responds with a deep sigh like he always does. It wasnât as though as he hated the kids mom but it got tiring having to explain that there wasnât any feelings for her. How could one say that about a dead woman without sounding like an asshole?
âYeah, well obviously I was so great that you just had to leave without any explanation there.â He says sarcastically, crossing his arms over his chest. âI donât want your apology, Caroline. Maybe I wanted one all those years ago but not anymore. What I want is an explanation.â
âAu-aurora?â She swallowed, her throat going dry. A part of her was happy that he remembered what they wanted to name their kids. A part of her, however, was angry that he named his kids to someone else after theyâve planned it. Once he mentioned about the woman (who was probably his girlfriend since theyâre not married or were they, she wondered) she felt bad about her thoughts. âIâm sorry, my condolences. I didnât know...â
âYou were great. You still are,â sighing she leaned back on the table and closed her eyes. âWhat kind of explanation do you want? One that would not end up you hating me for the rest of our lives?â

gingersnapbakesâ:
âTheyâre 5 now though Eric acts like heâs a 40 year old man.â He replies, accidentally giving her more information than he intends. He curses internally, hoping to god that she didnât notice the name or remember the importance though the thought of her not remembering the significance behind the name bothered him more than he cared to admit. âTheyâre at school now but Iâll have to pick them up later in the day. They usually hang out here after school and on the weekends since daycare is too expensive so youâll likely see âem. Canât have people helping me babysit too often.â He adds simply.
He wasnât really sure how he felt about the whole thought of Caroline meeting the twins if he was being honest. He was starting to get around to not having her in his life and suddenly there was the fact that Caroline would definitely would meet his kids. His heart was at a damn standoff with itself. He was angry at the fact that she would even meet his kids because they were supposed to be theirs. It was supposed to be the two of them against the world but then she just.. left. Then the other part was bursting at the seams imagining the two of them starting over, her being the mother that he had hoped to give the kids soon. That things would work out for them.
Then she apologizes and itâs like a dam breaks in him. âGet out.â It bursts out of him before he could stop it. âNot her, you guys.â He continues, addressing the other bakers in the room. He watches, glaring, calming his breath as he watches the last one scurry out to the front.Â
âYouâre right, Caroline. I donât care. This-â He starts laughing incessantly, dropping his hold on the whisk. â-âYou were an asshole during our relationshipâ? Were you? Iâm sorry, I guess I just got blinded so much by being happy that I didnât notice what you did wrong. Care to enlighten me? I mean donât get me wrong, I remember you leaving. Thatâs pretty easy fucking easy to remember.â He snaps.
Caroline let out a small chuckle. It was shallow and forced. She doesnât know what hurt more: the fact that he has kids with someone else, or that fact that he used one the names she picked out for their kids. Their wouldâve been kids. âIâm sure your kids are great. Eric seems fun to be around,â she tried to joke, âWhatâs the other kidâs name?â She nonchalantly asked, her eyes and hands still focused on putting all the cut cookies on the tray before taking the sugar to sprinkle over it. âThey must be a handful, having twins I mean, not that Iâm saying theyâre not well-behaved kids.. I just meant it must be handful to you and your wife because you have to take care of twice as much as one kid who are at the same time growing up.â
She jumped in surprised when he told her to get out. But then it immediately became clear as the last baker left the room that he was going to actually talk to her. She didnât know if she was scared or not. Heâs never been completely angry at her before but maybe because she left? He could definitely be pissed at the way things ended - or rather the way she ended things. But she guessed itâs now or never to actually come clean about it.
Her head hung low before she nodded. Tucking her hair behind her ear she looked up at him before speaking. âI meant was, I was an asshole for leaving. It was a shitty thing to do to you. You didnât deserve it. Youâre a great guy and I just, well, I was - am a horrible person for doing that to you. Thatâs what Iâm apologizing for. For leaving.. Anything else, I donât apologize for.â

Max was nurorious for being late. Always. Without a fail. Her mother often reminds her she even came into the world late â as if that was some cosmic sign that set her tardiness in stone. Either way, the sun was setting behind the horizon and she spent half of her journey tryig to remember if she locked the register or not. â Once sheâd reached Carolineâs she walks through the door as if it were her own, practically barging in. âIâm late, I know, I knowâŚIâm really sorry, the costumers were not pissing off, my phone done died an hour before closing and I had to walk all the way because my brother needed the car andâŚâ she stops in her track as she realies her reaction may be oer the top. âAnyways, Iâm here now ey? Ready to get some baking doneâŚâ she was a chef, but she always sucked at cakes. It just so happened that a friend needed just that, and who better than Caroline to help. âH-howâre you doing? Howâs your day been?â
Chuckling, Caroline patted Maxâ arm. âThere there. Actually, you came right on time. I was setting up so even if you came early we wouldnât have started until now. âIâm fine! Other than my ex being at the same work as me, and hates my guts. Iâm fine.â Caroline let out a small chuckle while shaking her head. âOh you know, work is work,â she said Max with an apron before continuing, âYesterday, Someone in Hogtied ask me if I was growing gray hair and it turned out to be flour in my hair.â She chuckled as she recounted the incident. It wasnât the same level as her run in with Stephan but she wouldnât want to bore Max with her problems. Unless she could give her advice on how to handle it - because lord help her she doesnât know what to do. âBut other than those two things, work and life has been pretty boring. Which I know in Frostford, if anything despite this town being very small, is very short lived. Iâm sure somethings bound to happen. How about you? Work? Life? Love? Keep me distracted from my own dramas.â
