carlos had been waiting outside of the princess’s bed chamber to escort her around the ton. it was his duty as her sworn body guard. after the death of her mother, he had been the only one the her father had trusted. he would do anything for the princess. they had taken him in when his family had died on their way to wales. he had been taken in by the head of the guards, and soon became personal body guard to the princess anabelle. he took this duty very seriously. he saw it as an honor, one he’d never complain aboutÂ
not that anyone could complain about such a duty. the princess was everything one would expect a princess to be. kind, warm, lovely, unearthly beautiful. these were just facts. although, he was hiding a dark secret. he was in love with his princess. nothing could ever come of it, so he said nothing. when the two of them were alone, she spoke to him as a friend. he tried not to engage in it, since it was wrong, at least it would be in the eyes of her father, but he could not help it. even though she was out of one marriage, she would soon marry someone. she’d have to. and he, a lowly guard, would be forced to watch. he just prayed whoever she married was worthy of her.Â
finally she emerged from her chamber ❝your majesty. i have the carriage ready, for wherever you wish to go.âťž he bowed his head, and then looked up in her eyes.Â
before carlos was assigned to be her personal guard, anabelle had been quite the troublemaker. she would often sneak out unaccompanied, longing for alone time, for peace and quiet. sometimes she would miss those moments of peace but, if her guard had to be anyone she would always choose carlos. she trusted him implicitly, as did her father. being the princess of wales, and her father’s heir no less, anabelle knew that she was a prime target, and that she needed to be protected, hence why she tried not to fight her father when he appointed carlos as her guard. it saddened the princess at first, knowing that she would no longer be able to sneak off alone, to do things that may be considered frowned upon for a woman of her station. but.. soon enough she managed to get used to it, and she found herself enjoying carlos’ company.
as much as carlos would try to avoid her need to form a friendship with him, the woman knew that her persistence would wear him down eventually. the two were very similar in personality. anabelle had come to realise that her guard was very selfless and caring. the princess knew that eventually she would need to find herself a suitor, and when that time came.. she would want someone with similar personality traits to carlos. the more she got to know him, the more anabelle realised what a wonderful person he was.Â
the princess had dismissed her maids once she was perfectly content in how she looked, though that didn’t take much at all. anabelle knew that she had to keep up appearances for her father’s sake but, if she had it her way, her finery would be saved for functions, not something she would wear on an every day basis. the life of a princess sure was one to be desired, huh? a light sigh passed plump lips as she then exited her chambers, allowing the door to swing closed behind her. “good morning carlos.” anabelle offered him a kind smile before then shaking her head as he bowed to her, a slight roll of her eyes following. “i am quite certain that i have already asked you to drop the formality when we are alone, no?” she teased with yet another smile, a hint of mischief shining behind azure hues.
