it's  only  when  he  mentions  'karev'  that  the  woman's  harsh  expression  slips  into  something  a  little  softer,  guard  lowering.      "yeah.  yeah,  i  know  them."      more  than  that?  she  trusts  them,  especially  alex.  they  came  from  similar  roots    /    two  signs  of  the  same  coin,  forced  to  fight  for  their  survival  as  well  as  their  sibling's.  if  this  guy  had  their  approval  then  maybe  she  should  start listening      "i  don't,  uh..  "      hands  wring,  thumb  massaging  into  palm  pressure  point  in  an  attempt  to  self  -  soothe  nervous while letting  out  an  almost  nervous  laugh.      "doctors  don't  just  do  shit  like  this    [...]    y’know?  not  for  people  like  us."      judgemental  stares and  condescending  tones.  that's  what  she  expects.  tongue  wets  lower  lip  and  fiona  takes  another  half - minute  before  FINALLY  deciding  to  give  him  a  chance,  turning  to  look  at  the  other  once  more  with  a  cautious  nod.      "okay.  for  carl."      there's  a  beat  taken.  the  voice  in  her  head  calls  her  an  idiot  for  even  humouring  this,  makes  her  quickly add  on:      "please  don't  turn  out  to  be  a  fuckin'  asshole."

“so polite.” patricia comments, letting out a humorless little laugh of her own and shaking her head. “i can see everything john’s said about this side of his family appears to be true.”

the request for some stolen finger food has the reassuring smile to grow into a delighted smirk, and she nods to confirm the request. "obviously. stealing you the fanciest things i can find, maybe something that i can't even pronounce."

eyes  are  quick  to  light  up  in  mock  excitement  and  she  can’t  resist  reaching  forward  to  playfully  nudge  the  other’s  side,  dramatics  complete  with  an  audible  gasp.    "now  ya  just  spoilin'  me."    and  don’t  think  she  doesn’t  appreciate  it.  every  little  helps  in  their  household,  especially  when  it  comes  in  the  form  of  a  treat.  they  don’t  exactly  get  many.    "i  knew  there  was  a  reason  we  kept  you  around."    it’s  depressingly  casual  how  easy  it  is  for  her  to  step  over  frank,  passed  out  on  the  kitchen  floor,  without  even  sparing  him  a  glance;    as  natural  as  breathing  these  days,  and  it  makes  fiona  realise  a  part  of  her  wishes  she  could  go.  put  on  a  nice  dress,  pretend  to  be  someone  else  for  a  few  hours,  but  even  if  she  thought  the  uniforms  would  turn  a  blind  eye,  going  there  would  mean  taking  the  night  off.  taking  the  night  off  didn’t  pay  bills.  she  falls  to  sit  on  the  couch  beside  gaby,  leg  immediately  lifting  to  allow  chin  to  rest  against  knee.    "why  me  anyway?    ⸻    no  hot  date?"

" alex tries to reassure his friend , hoping to dissipate any worries fiona may have regarding that . in hindsight , maybe starting a conversation with we need to talk and you'll want to sit down for this , weren't the way to go . and yeah , he could just drop the news without a second thought but he has a feeling that would be careless and inconsiderate here . there's a faint thank you as he takes the beer , popping it open but hesitates on drinking any from it as he thinks over how to say the words he's been trying to say for the past two weeks but keep falling short on . " i'm leaving . " at least that's the plan , for now . but while his wife had already told him she'd follow him anywhere , he feels bad about asking her to pick up her life again and move . it's the only hesitation he has in all of this . " at least i think i am . i don't know , i haven't really made up my mind yet on if i'm taking the offer or not . "

his  words  offer  at  least  some  reassurance,  though  shoulders  stay  tense,  unable  to  figure  out  exactly  where  the  conversation  is  heading.  it  isn’t  his  fault  as  much  as  an  automatic  trauma  response.  fiona  always  prepares  for  the  worst  because  nine  times  outta  ten?    ⸻    that’s  the  only  kinda  news  people  ever  give  her.    "jesus,  is  frank  raking  up  another  emergency  department  bill  we’ll  never  be  able  to  pay?"    it’s  a  fair  question,  though  resigned  defeat  quickly  turns  into  surprise  when  he  offers  an  answer  she  hadn’t  considered.  'i'm leaving.'    "holy fuckin'  shit."    eldest  gallagher  sibling  sits  up  a  little  straighter  and  takes  a  minute  to  process.  there’s  a  selfish  part  of  her  that  almost  responds  negatively;  the  part  that’s  used  to  everybody  getting  out,  except  her,  but  she  works  on  herself,  swallows  it  down.  this  is  about  him.  not her own abandonment issues.    "that’s    …    holy  fuckin' shit."    the  two  words  repeat  with  a  laugh  this  time,  leaning  forward  with  elbows  resting  on  knees.    "well,  what’s  the  offer?"

"of course i love my son. why would you ever possibly think otherwise?"

fiona  snorts.  that’s  it,  that’s  all  the  response  she’s  getting.

my  mother’s  bipolar,    and  my  father’s  an  alcoholic    &    an  addict.    he  takes  what  he  pleases  and  offers  nothing.    no  money    /    no  support.      —      I’VE  DONE  WHAT  I  COULD  TO  RAISE  MY  SIBLINGS.    i  wish  i  could’ve  done  more.    i’m  not  asking  for  your  pity  or  your  admiration      .  .  .      i  just  want  to  be  able  to  give  these  kids  EVERYTHING  they  deserve,    because  they’re  great  kids.    and  they  deserve  better.
