there's a conversation to be had about the rise of live actions being made to spread the brand and IP in media instead of coming up with original new works (for worst in the case of disney). BUT! something that I really appreciate through watching the one piece live action, is the new interpretations and dynamics that comes out of live action that doesn't appear in the original works. as someone who has no context for the original, the dynamics of the characters, performance, writing, and arcs all comes through the actors themselves. you can have the highest budget in the world, good costuming, set design, makeup, cgi, etc. if the actors themselves aren't interpreting their version of these characters in an authentic way, it just wouldn't work.
live action allows for so much more nuances to the actors own choices for that character, while still retaining the core of their essence. that's what makes a live action worthwhile! sure seeing an anime character in 'real life' is cool, but the campiness and shine of watching a live action anime wears off after you see a bad cgi dragon or effect. what makes it special and media that is needed, is another interpretation of the text in another form. some characteristics that seems funny in a manga, comes off as terrifying in live action. a character seems flat in a book, comes across as more depth in live action. a lot come from good writing and direction, but aye, if the acting ain't acting, it's not gonna work!
