The VRChat-verse

Today, about noon EST, I went into the The Pug and played the ever effective silent busboy with a small group of commited roleplayers. Sometimes I prefer to play silent. It lets people feel more comfortable in their story building. I also ran into my first VR friend. They too like to remain silent and communicate using hand gestures.

Later in the day, around 9pm, I showed up at The Pug again and engaged in a group session of telling offensive jokes on the second floor stage. A lot of racist humor thrown around so my jokes fell short for the crowd. It was realy the first time I've spoken at length in. But then I meet some great dudes, one from Texas and one from New Zealand. Spent alot of time just bullshitting and had a good time.

My dillema is I don't know how I should approach it if these groups should happen to converge together.

What I Have Learned About VRChat

I have learned that the VRChat community is ever growing. Each day more and more people learn of it through YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, all the social media platforms, and are so engrossed that some (like myself) shell out a ton of money to enjoy the full VR experience.

But here is what I REALLY learned. It is being filled with teenage to college age white guys who love to say the word "nigger." It is overflowing with white guys who have little anime girl avatars and use them ONLY to torture other white men. Those "tortured" white men are only there to live out their sexual assault fantasies.

However, if you really look, you'll find people who are imaginative and want to take the free form style of VRChat and create amazing narratives. You'll find role players who fill those narratives with character structure and purpose. You'll find developers creating unique avatars and worlds that are, simply put, mind-blowing.

You'll also find people from all walks of life, all genders, all races, all orientations, and it can be wonderful. But with all things online, the trolls are trying to take it.

UPDATE: I've found some wonderful people who like the role playing aspect and one or two who enjoy just interacting. My group of new friends is small, but what we lack in size we make up for in imagination.

Holy shit.

In the fourth grade, we had to pick an inventor, dress like the inventor, and explain our invention. I decided to pick something off the wall (instead of, like, a light bulb), so I ended up doing my little presentation as George Crum. I remember reading about his work as a chef, learning about his shortness with customers, and the interaction (possibly apocryphal, although Crum certainly invented the potato chip) with the diner who kept complaining about his home fries being too thick.

I literally made a presentation as this man, and used a few websites and a couple encyclopediae (yeah, I’m old) to source all the data. I certainly know more than most people do about George Crum.

The point of all this is that, until I came across this post on Tumblr, I had absolutely no idea he was black. I’ve known who Crum was for over twenty years and never knew his race, because no website or encyclopedia thought it was worth mentioning.

Erasure is a fucking disease.

When I was in the forth grade I did a report on Lewis Latimer, the African American man who invented the carbon filament that is in modern day lightbulbs. I was surprised, even as a child, that my teachers had no idea who he was and was further surprised that they didn't believe me. I am white, so are my parents. My father had to come down to the school and scream and yell at the staff with the verified history in hand to give me the appropriate grade on the paper. On a positive note, the next month there was a school wide lesson plan that brought to light the erasure of black faces from history. In that time I learned of Mr. Crum.

Education is the path to the elimination of ignorance, poverty, injustice, crime, and all forms of hate. This country (USA) needs to stop dumping 56% of its federal budget in military spending (that's in the trillions of dollars, btw) and start putting that money into education (which recieves less than 1.5%). Educate all of our people, ALL OF THEM. And teach them the WHOLE truth.

I love this collection of sigils, but it is annoying difficult to read and impossible to search, so I typed it up as best I could.
