Snippet from my Librarian!Neris fic:
“So just tell Cassian we’re not, then?” he asked her, all innocent.
Jesus fucking Christ. She could not be going through this many surprises so close to Summer Reading!
“Cassian is texting you? How does he even have your number?”
“Facebook Messenger,” he explained with a wave of his phone. “I’ll spare you the obscene amount of profanity he used, but I think someone is feeling a little insecure about this heinous rumor. As he’s your problem, I’ll leave him up to you? Or do you wish me to? I’d be happy to, of course.”
Realizing the numerous ignored texts she’d received from him earlier were probably enquiring about this, Nesta grabbed her phone. Fucking Feyre and Elain. She should have known as soon as Eris mentioned the misunderstanding that it’d get back to Cassian. Because that’s just how life tended to go for Nesta; one fuck up mess after another to clean up.
CASSian the Great (Ass): i know your still mad but feyre just told me the stupidest thing ever and i need to make sure its just feyre misunderstanding something.
CASSian the Great (Ass): are you and vanserra sleeping together??
CASSian the Great (Ass): eris vanserra
CASSian the Great (Ass): since theres a million of them
CASSian the Great (Ass): please dont tell me this is payback for the whole mor fight thing nes
CASSian the Great (Ass): i told you i already talked with mor and that the whole thing was a misunderstanding. Her humor is just shit sometimes
CASSian the Great (Ass): come on nes
CASSian the Great (Ass): i know your screening these
CASSian the Great (Ass): just tell me its not true
CASSian the Great (Ass): eris is such a fucking ass. You even said so all those times youd bitch about him to me
CASSian the Great (Ass): feys wrong right?
Nesta’s right eye started doing that annoying tick thing it always did whenever she was highly stressed.
What was she supposed to say to this? Did she let him know that yes, Feyre was completely wrong? And that even if she was sleeping with Eris, it was absolutely none of Cassian’s business?
Nesta bit her lip as she stared at the messages. She’d successfully ignored all of Cassian’s texts for weeks, but if she didn’t respond now, this would likely get worse. He was prone to hastily jumping to conclusions and recklessly doing something he’d later regret.
She added slimey, smelly sea creatures nibbling at Feyre’s feet to her calming vision. And the bright, hot sun to make her sister more miserable, too.
“Nesta?” She looked up at Eris, his amusement now morphed into slight concern. “He’s not mad at you, is he?”
She shook her head and set her phone face down on her desk. She didn’t have time for this. “I need to get back to work, Eris. My program submissions are due to Viviane in an hour and I’m only halfway through them.”
Eris nodded and stood up. Nesta breathed a sigh of relief, happy to focus again on things she knew. Things she was good at. She was just about to wake her computer back up when he stopped at the door, his hand on the handle, and looked back at her.
“What if we don’t tell them they’re wrong?” he asked.
“Our family. Cassian. What if we tell them they’re not wrong and that we are dating? Or pretending to, at least.”
Nesta blinked, uncertain she heard him correctly, and let out a small, incredulous breath. Was he serious? He wanted them to go along with this? Have people think they were dating? “You want to be my boyfriend?”
She let out another incredulous breath. “Why?”
He shrugged. “Why not?” He leaned his shoulder against her door and smiled.
