not to rehash s1 criticism again but to this day the only direct explanation i’ve heard for why they defanged gabe was that podcast interview where jon steinberg said they were “investing in sally and liking her” so they wanted her not to be treated badly. i’m sure there are reasons they are intentionally avoiding talking about but taken at face value that’s just straightforwardly saying abuse should only happen to characters who deserve it lol
like i’m inclined to think that’s not their actual reason but it’s actually incredibly important that sally is a likable, kind, strong, smart woman—and she is treated badly. the first thing we ever hear about sally is “she's the best person in the world, which just proves my theory that the best people have the rottenest luck.”
i think it’s more likely that the rumor about them deciding it was too scary for kids is true. and that’s also bullshit. this stuff happens in kids’ lives all the time. have the decency to treat them like they live in the same world as you

i maintain that “[thing] is too dark for kids”/cozywholesome witch-in-the-alps mentality/book bans are all cousins. and the effect is not just what stories get pulled off of shelves (and screens) but also the impact on what stories get made and how. most of the time we’ll never know the extent of what that impact is, so the difference in how the lightning thief was told in 2005 vs 2024 is kind of an unusual data point. i’m sure the team wouldn’t have considered themselves to be self-censoring, but they created this while swimming in the same water as us these last several years.

To myself, raised in an environment that glorified and romanticized restriction and suffering:
There is no victory in skipping dinner, or lunch, or breakfast, or morning coffee, or dessert.
There is no victory in refusing heaters and air conditioners and fans and heated blankets.
There is no victory in denying yourself sleep, or showers, or movement, or water, or a comfortable bed, or taking the elevator vs. the stairs.
There is no victory in refusing pain meds and heating pads and ice packs and medical help.
There is no victory in punishing yourself needlessly, in telling yourself that this pain you feel is because you are bad to the core and deserve it.
There is no victory in choking back your laughter and your tears, to keep an imagined equilibrium of safety that is really just a dry, cracked, empty, endless emotional desert.
You are here. You are in this body, and this body is yours. You deserve good things. You are alive, and that is messy and loud, and messy and loud are okay.
It’s okay to live abundantly. It’s okay to make mistakes, it’s okay to indulge. This paralysis of self-punishment, self-restriction, self-loathing is not healthy or good for you.
TLDR: You'll never live a full life you keep restricting yourself. Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!

I try not to fall into the "I never liked their work anyway" ditch when an artist/creator reveals themself to be a terrible person
BUT
a feeling I do have and will stand by is "While I enjoyed their work overall I did have some gripes that I overlooked out of affection and whimsy, but now that my loyalty is gone and my affection tainted there is nothing holding me back from enumerating my many grievances, to which the revelations of the creator's shittiness may or may not provide a new and infuriating context."
#such a good summation of this actually#because yeah there’s usually things that were always present#but which were easy to overlook or give the benefit of the doubt#that suddenly become relevant after a revelation about the creator#and it’s really not the same thing as the self-defensive “’I never liked it anyway’
