After a long hiatus, this proposed 12-storey hotel building (JTC tower) is showing signs of "life" again. During a short "walkathon" along JP Laurel Ave. to catch a ride home, I can't help but notice the moving crane atop this under construction building The rush hour gridlock actually made most of the passers-by gawk at it.

            The advent of technology brings education to our very fingertips. In this contemporary world of ours, the bridge between the student and education can be the world of fast paced Internet. It can be the essential element in producing a new amalgam of present day learning society. It brings learning to people and provides a different learning environment that otherwise could not be possible. Furthermore, the availability of distance learning programs expunges the delimitation of the four-walled-classroom-instruction. It provides one the liberty where to gain knowledge at one’s own convenience. And consequently, a choice of quality education within one’s very grasps; getting the didactic content you want, when and where you want it.

            On one hand, as a nurse educator, the need to step up beyond the bachelor’s degree arises.  Albeit a requirement to become a qualified Nursing Department faculty member; acquiring higher education, is more of a need than just a mere requirement. It bestows one an avenue to further fuel one’s lamp, as being likened to one as an educator. For being a teacher is like “a candle or a lamp that consumes itself to light the way for others”, as related by an old professor of mine. And nevertheless, educators are viewed as those who exude a cornucopia of knowledge. Likewise, as we continue to grow the need to embrace constant learning is indispensable.

            Now, the dilemma as to the venue of acquiring the necessary post graduate studies lingers in me. But not until the idea of distance education at the University of the Philippines Open University beckoned from someone who satisfyingly benefited from it. And at the moment, I readily jumped in the sack for the idea of going through the non-traditional mode of learning was never far fetched. On the other hand, enrolling in graduate studies allows an extra room for professional growth and development. The responsibility of taking one’s baccalaureate knowledge and skills to the next level is encapsulated in the very essence of professionalism. Furthermore, this task of keeping abreast with the ever changing health care profession is materialized through the acquisition of continuing education units and more importantly through post graduate studies. Thus, these are the very reasons of my intentions to be enlisted and be educated in your prestigious university.  

            Moreover, choosing distance education for a Master’s degree in Nursing allows me to balance every aspect of my present life as an educator. Auspiciously, if given the chance, this will also permit me to improve on the substance of my lectures as an educator. For I feel compelled to do so because I believe that my students deserve more and the best of what their parents are shelling out for their education. On a positive note, the goal here is not to enroll at the best venue for higher education but to make the most of what is given. Be it in distance education or in the traditional classroom didactic training, it all boils down to the passion for learning and the desire to improve one’s intellect and capabilities.

            And beginning with an end in mind, my profession as a nurse be it in the academe or in the corners of the hospital will indeed be greatly affected. With the vision of being a newly improved nurse, equipped with novel knowledge and skills, I therefore can continue to inspire other learners especially the youth through humble service by way of teaching. And definitely, learning and the desire for learning doesn’t stop there. It will, indeed, incessantly emanate from the deepest of my being.

  IT’S BACK TO SCHOOL NO MORE!     Summer finally bade farewell and the advent of June’s annual school opening has brought so much air of nostalgia. With a bunch of school  kids around clad in their fresh school uniform and seeing other college students rushing to school, I can’t help but have a bittersweet longing for things in the past. The fun of seeing friends at school and getting daily allowances are such great comforts of a student that I surely would be missing this year. Yet, having been employed lately as a Staff Nurse, inevitably it’s back to school no more for me and for my friends as well. Nostalgic as it is, but there’s no turning back.
