ok this was my result. I feel like it's more accurate for my preferences as a reader than my style as a writer; everything I'm writing currently either has the couple get together rather quickly or they're already together (except this one wip where the couple isn't even gonna meet each other until halfway through the fic lol). I very much love reading slow burn though, I don't usually like reading fics where the couple is already together. I wanna see the process!!!! I wanna watch them fall!!!! I will say, can't be TOO too long of a slow burn though. I adored Clueless Teens @karizard-ao3 but at some points I was literally going insane at how slow the burn was😭

Marco breathed hard, it was taking everything within him to not scream out or cry uncontrollably. There was something, he didn't know how to put it into words, something was really wrong. His body, his skin-
Something was very, very wrong.
It was his arm, and the right side of his face, they didn't feel right. Well, they didn't feel at all. Both were completely numb, he couldn't express the right side of his face, or move his right eye. It only ever stared directly forwards, and blinked on its own. His arm was also numb, and almost seemingly paralyzed. But it wasn't paralyzed, it moved on its own. Like it had a mind of its own, like it belonged to someone else.
He was going to be discharged. He knew this. His dreams of joining the Military Police were completely dashed, all because part of his body had suffered a strange sort of paralysis. He couldn't remember what happened, it was all a blur of pain and fever. They had found him alone in the ruins of Trost, feeding off his dead comrades. Because of the severe illness he suffered, they decided not to charge him with cannibalism.
It was only thanks to the urging of Reiner and the others that the higher ups had reluctantly decided to let Marco have another chance. A series of physical tests and exams to determine his fitness for the military. He was certain he would fail. He didn't know how he was going to operate ODM gear with only one functioning arm.
Still, that arm. His face.
He wanted to rip them off. They weren't his. It wasn't his skin, his flesh. It was a parasite, it was eating into him, taking over his body. He needed to get them off, get it out. Get it out. GET IT OUT.
Vaguely Marco realized that he had started screaming. He was clawing at his own face and eye, trying to rip them away. The others held him down while Eren fetched the medic. Marco tried to get them to understand, they just needed to understand, it wasn't him. It's not his arm, it's not his face! It's not him! It's NOT.
"It's going to be okay, Marco. Just hold still."
He continued to scream as they flipped him onto his stomach, something cold and wet brushed his thigh, and then there was a pinch. Dizziness overtook him, he gripped at anything within reach, Jean took his hand. The arm twitched, its fingers spasming.
people still getting mad at this post i made in 2014 so I will add here. in 2026. that the point of this post isn’t “happy endings bad” its when the story’s only way to imagine a happy ending is a heterosexual nuclear family for everyone.
