Charles Gesmar was born in 1900. By the time he was 18 it was clear he was an unbelievably precocious and prolific genius of illustration and design – with an ideal aesthetic for the emerging Jazz Age – creating images and thousands of costumes for Mistinguett. He attracted a great deal of attention in Germany as well as in France, producing this charming, whimsical, and sweetly feminine poster for the Theater des Westens before dying abruptly of pneumonia before his 28th birthday.
