A tale of war and fortune in the blood stained land of Ellas. Acheron, warrior of growing renown, finds himself in the thrall of the dark and ruinous God of War. With a conqueror on the march and with his companion, Tyche, by his side, Acheron leaves blood stained sandal prints in his wake.

Buy my comic, its good sword and sandal fun.
Probably Dutch. Iron hilt with flattened recurved knuckle bow with medial expansion decorated with foliate splay. Double waisted medial ring guard and faceted p
Beautiful and simple. My kind of rapier. Also, notice the thumb ring, I imagine this would help with a stronger cut.

It was a great joy to model at premier concept design school Syn Studio today, demonstrating I:33âs 14th century European martial arts for artists who are training to go into MontrĂŠalâs vast video game industry. Thanks so much to Salgood Sam for inviting me again! This work is by the following artists (Iâm not 100% sure of the order), Salgood Sam, Lydia Wong, Tatiana Tung Gerencer, RenĂŠe-Claude Dostie, and Dany DiSalvo.
The deeper I get into Ragione d'Adoprar, the more certain I get that itâs my HEMA Bible, and Giacomo di Grassi is my HEMA Lord & Saviour come to free us from âfollow the text exactlyâ pedantry. Cause heâs like, do this thing more or less precisely as written in the True Art section then basically says, as long as it agrees with the fundamental principles he lays out in the Introduction, do anything and everything with whatever is on hand in the False Art. And my dude includes empty-hand boxing in the False Art of the Cloak, including a choke/neck crank. Just good stuff.
Certainly sounds interesting, though I havenât read much of di Grassiâs manuscripts.
If you do, definitely get Jherek Swangerâs translation of the 1570 manuscript, not the 1594 English version (I.G. Gentleman was a shit translator).
Spread the word!
Thus it could be said that a soldier differs from other men, not through knowing how best to employ a sword or bill, but by knowing how best to recognize his advantages in any situation, and by knowing how to defend himself with judgement with anything whatsoever, and to attack with security. True fencing consists of nothing else, and anyone who thinks he can learn this art by practicing many specific blows with the point and the edge is fooling himself. Because not only do you learn little through these particular exercises, but there are so many distinct circumstances in this art, and they vary so greatly, that itâs impossible to hastily take part without a comprehensive grasp of all the advisements and principles of the art; and they are based solely upon offense and defense, and not specifically on the unaccompanied sword, or dagger, targa, shield, spiedo, or bill. You wonât always be handling one of these weapons when you have to attack or defend yourself, but instead sometimes you might have to defend yourself from a spiedo with a stick, or with a chair against a sword, or with a cape against a dagger. And in such instances most donât employ mandritti or riversi for defense, but rather that knowledge of the advisements already listed, and this knowledge, being naturally present in oneâs spirit, may be augmented and ingrained by the art, thereby making a man secure and bold, so that he dares to enter into any great danger, and knows, upon seeing the nature and position of a weapon, what it can do and the ways in which it can attack and defend. And from this judgement arises the knowledge of what he has to do, and how to apply himself against it.
Giacomo di Grassi (1570), Swanger translation (via elsegno)
<3 Di Grassi. Donât limit yourself to one weapon. Try all things.
Yesterday in sparring I was hitting âhardâ when I knew the strikes had a good chance of being parried - a heavy buckler strike can shake someone up enough to misjudge their next parry, which I determined would be a controlled strike. I think this is something that defines whether someone can be a âcontrolledâ fighter: if they are able to stop or take the force out of a strike, but not the speed.
Single Sword from Giacomo di Grassi Made Simple
Establish measure: Extend your arm with body profiled, so that you and your partnerâs points stand next to each otherâs hilts. Take a half step forward, sink into the Guardia Bassa depicted in this plate from Saviolo, with your swords crossed at the middle of their blades. Do this every time before working an element so that you are definitely at correct distance, especially if you donât have much martial arts experience.
For space saving, the actions are under the cut. The idea is to build on each action from the crossing, so anyone can pick this up as long as they have a training partner and a sword like object that can take shock and has a crossguard. This is how Iâm going to be teaching di Grassiâs single sword from now on, and figured other people could use the curriculum. Do a minimum of 25 repetitions apiece for each of the italicized elements. Then do slow freeplay, trying to make each element work in rhythm with free movement. Then spar! (With protective gear of course!)

Really good post by Kaja.
Right to the point - excellent breakdown of whatâs going on. Applies to all kinds of martial arts and co-ed sports.
An explanation and some theories behind how the crossed extensor reflex and movement subsystems may be involved in I.33.
I.33 is biomechanically the most efficient fencing system because it amplifies the bodyâs natural reflexes. I agree with this, yes.
A brief look at the solo form I came up with for Giacomo di Grassiâs single sword. This includes most of the actions from the text, and certainly all of the actions stated as being totally secure. Iâm going to try and film a breakdown including partnered application this weekend for the YouTubes.
