You know what I think I would be grand?
Stereotypical Medieval Fantasy setup with an Old Wizard Mentor coming to the Provincial Hometown and telling the Plucky Farmhand Chosen One: “These simple farmers are not your real parents, child, you are the lost heir! Come with me and I’ll—“
“No,” says the Plucky Farmhand Chosen One. “I know exactly who my parents are. They raised me, they’re in the house behind us right now. Now if you’ll excuse me, their sheep need watching because our main herding dog just had puppies.”
“But, child,” says the Wizard Mentor. “The people you call ‘mother and father’ are common peasants! Your real mother and father were the righteous rulers of this whole kingdom, before the Dark Lord killed them and conquered it!”
“Why should I care?” replies the Plucky Farmhand Chosen One. “The ‘Dark Lord’ is not hurting family’s crops or animals, this town doesn’t even supply the capital. Also, rude of you to call my parents ‘common.’ Have YOU ever seen a farm woman herd cattle back into their pastures bare handed or a farm man hauling two full sacks of grain over his shoulders while avoiding an angry goat? Could the old royals do that?”
“…No,” admits the Wizard. “But your bloodline! Do you not care to for your bloodline?”
“Not really, my family doesn’t even have a last name and I have a few older siblings who already have kids.”
“But your parents’ dying wish—“
“They are not dead yet,” insists the Chosen One, firm. “And when they are, I’ll run this farm just like they raised me to do. Now, get off their property so I can check the gods damned sheep.”
Cue the Plucky Farmhand Chosen One proceeding to go on their world saving quest (to get money to keep supporting the farm) after the Wizard leaves in a huff (and magic destroys said barn in an ‘accident’ as motivation to get going) with their entire farm family (their hometown takes care of the farm in their absence and is later left un-destroyed by the Dark Lord’s minions because the Chosen One is not there), armed with rakes, pitchforks, country dry wit and one very aggressive goat thst headbutts everything they have to fight (and also the Wizard for no reason).
Meanwhile the Wizard Mentor comes along thinking the Chosen One will want his help to learn magic, only for them to figure it out like how they figure out why a plow is broken or which crops are sick from rot. They just trial and error the thing the Wizard has spent decades of his life studying and then go “Hey, Ma, look! We could use this to keep the rafters from rotting when it rains and double Old Bessie’s milk!”
Plus the Chosen One’s family are there to A) keep them mentally stable from seeing The Horrors and b) side-eye the Wizard every time he brings up ‘destiny’ or mentions the Chosen One’s parents and doesn’t mean the farmers.
